hassata Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 There are reports that a Libyan pilot was ordered to bomb rebel positions but instead turned his jet around and flew it into Qaddafi's compound killing his son (who is the commander of a special forces brigade accused of atrocities). http://feb17.info/images/photo-of-muhammad-mukhtar-osman/ [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
mvsgas Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Yes, they are dual mode Brimstome missiles. This Tornado is quite heavily armed with Asraam for self-defense, two Paveway 4 bombs and 3 Brimstone. You can also see joysticks for the WSO at 0:48 and 5:11; I guess these are for the Litening pod, I'm not sure why there are two, one at each side? How can you tell that the bombs are Paveway IV? To whom it may concern, I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that. Thank you for you patience. Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..
tflash Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Because that is what the RAF is flying on the Tornado. It are clearly GBU-12 sized bombs, with the light grey guidance units typical in this case. The RAF does not use other GBU-12 sized bombs than Paveway 4. The Typhoon is only cleared to carry Paveway II, in the UK case these are larger GBU-124 1000 pounders. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
mvsgas Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Well, I ask because you can see the typical extra "bumps" on the seeker head that a paveway IV would have but I can't tell if they have the "hunch back" To whom it may concern, I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that. Thank you for you patience. Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..

Correct, we only use PWIVs for the 500lb class now. tflash is also correct in his comments regarding typhoon only being cleared for PWII, unfortunately while Typhoon will be cleared for every AG weapon in the UK inventory, the process is still on going and as such limits its use in the AG role at the moment. The 'phoon is still infinitely superior in every way to the relic that is Tornado of course. :D 1
Mikoyan89 Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 Don't call it relic... it has still something to say even in today's wars..... YouTube Blog
Vekkinho Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 Don't call it relic... it has still something to say even in today's wars..... Yes Tornado seems good enough for at least another 10 years. Too bad Jags had to go, they could serve few more conflicts! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

I highly doubt thats the airplane Muhammad Mukhtar Osman was flying. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

pyates2104 Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Is that the first operational employment for British Typhoons and are they full combat ready (A/A and A/G capability)? kind regards, Fire Yes and Yes ish, but don't quote me on that.... I don't think they are actually being utilized for the AG role, that would be the Tornado GR4's. Tranche 2 (block 5) aircraft have been delivered to the RAF and they did complete Green flag (bombing exercise). So some at least are capable of A2G)

I found a listing that said they were A-10A's, but given the type of missions flown I would have expected Charlies to be desirable.
