Revvin Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Awesome support, it would be great to see other developer follow
WynnTTr Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 If this technology is incorporated into DirectX then they won't have a monopoly. They didn't freeze out other joystick manufacturers for instance when they were making their own joysticks and peripherals and their voice communications API became incorporated into DirectX also for anyone to use despite selling their own voice communication/control software and hardware solution for gamers. ASUS are also going to be showing off their WAVI Xmotion motion controller using technology from Primesense who were behind the Kinect's motion sensor. It may be early days for this kind of technology to find a standard as happened with DirectX but its surely a good thing for that to happen. This isn't just about head tracking for Microsoft or ASUS though, head tracking is just one feature available, the big selling point to your average consumer will be based around the idea of navigating through your computer like Tom Cruis in Minority Report. You're right. I hadn't thought of this: the bigger picture. Maybe I've just gotten so used to being niche that I've forgotten what it's like to be mainstream. :music_whistling: With that in mind, I'm all for it happening.

Agree on that! Nice try to deflect but 3DFx were in trouble long before any patent suits. They tried to monopolise the market by switching from being a large OEM provider to alienating their customers by buying an established graphics card manufacturer to do it all themselves. On top of that they were running out of time as a new standard was set that was open to anyone and they had to try and compete on a level playing field. This may be true for NaturalPoint should Microsoft really push motion control and therefore head tracking as a feature of that motion control so the likes of Logitech, Saitek, ASUS or any other of a number of manufacturers can release their own hardware to work on a common API. This was why I suggested that NaturalPoint could become a software only provider as they are ahead of the game right now and have the know-how and expertise that other manufacturers are perhaps still trying to gather. err, its no deflection...from memory.. the first of the patent suits was brought against nVidia by 3DFX, ATI and Silicone Graphics - nVidia lost (3DFX suffered from poor management, such as high employee turn over, high employee perks for some and a manufacturing department which was financially bleeding badly)... nVidia came back with a patent suit of its own against 3DFX at about the same time Microsoft Xbox was coming out, of which 3DFX was scheduled to provide the graphics chip for it (Giga Pixel?) but there was some doubt that 3DFX could deliver so, all at the same time... nVidia was awarded the contract, 3DFX lost the patent suit, nVidia got the chip (along with the core of 3DFX through the damages deal) and the Xbox was born. (does anyone remember the nVidia 85.95 driver release which killed thousands of Sony crt's worldwide, at the same time Sony was ceasing CRT manufacture to focus on LCD's?) we can discuss it further Revvin, if you want, in a seperate thread if you'd like start one. that's all anyone was really interested in though was the NP software ;) good on DCS for the api - best of luck (perhaps now the FT and FTNIR people could clean up their apps?) sobek Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 And das it mean we can have FreeTrack without "hacking" dlls and so on? The API will have to be integrated into FreeTrack, dunno if there's any ongoing development. FTNIR will pick it up, i'm pretty sure. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Boberro Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Thanks, so far FreeTrack's developers said they didn't abandon the project, but since long time I haven't seen any update... I doubt this API will be integrated soon :( I use IR camera with white stripes hat. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... jireland607 Posted June 8, 2011 Author Posted June 8, 2011 I doubt this API will be integrated soon :( It's the 'Good Luck' bit that worries me... I would not worry too much. I'm not at liberty to say too much but the developer of FaceTracknoIR has been working on this and it looks very promising indeed, possibly for FreeTrack users as well. Wim (the developer of FTnoIR) is on a break at the moment - which is why its gone quiet for a bit - but I am sure he will tell you more when he returns. ______________________________________________________________________________________ AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.4 Ghz | 8GB DDR3 Dual Channel | Ati HD4850 XFX | 22" Samsung TFT & NEC 17" touchscreen
