They need to start by cooling off those trees and ground first, since they're almost as hot as tanks, also agree with you Phazon, that JTAC should inform, if the target has left the original spot, and most probably does IRL, don't you think? I haven't ever got report BDA do anything, no answer nothing, so moving targets + JTAC = no match

Just tried to play a big random-gen mission tonight, got frustrated by JTAC (well actually 2 A-10s setup as AFACs) giving me targets but not updating on their position. The units move quite quickly so by the time they are finished giving their 9-line they have moved away. This is starting to get frustrating now. Report BDA is broken and does not work, and the JTAC are just not dynamic enough to update you with the intel on their own.

Combined with the fact I had targets behind trees which does not help. Trees are starting to become more frustrating than they should be, they show up on the FLIR as if they were on fire!:helpsmilie:

This sim is great on so many aspects but now I've started using more of its systems I'm starting to find things that just don't work as they should. We are mostly past the bug-fixing stage now in regards to patches, I'd like to see more effort now in polishing the sim some more to really turn it into the ultimate A-10C sim. Having the Report BDA function at least working would be a good start I would think as thats outright broken and is a big hit for using JTAC against a moving target.

Shift F10 FTW:)

My opinion. Try using the map to cheat and this will give a general area to look. Using labels just makes everything that much harder later on;)

I never used labels, but when that JTAC thingy is what it is, maybe I could change so that I see dots when, say 1 mile radius of targets, then again I'd see every other target too... kinda feel like cheating :/ for example 6 CBU-97s + labels - god help them...

Hmm... I'm sure they will fix the JTAC in future updates, what we need to do is to keep this thread alive :P

Fix the JTAC?

This quite much covers the worst part using JTAC

"JTAC doesn't inform you of new threats, absolutely does not give you up to date information on moving targets and only tells you where they were when you asked no matter how long ago that was (SERIOUSLY?!), and could really stand to give better information in general"

"I agree 100%. I have turned off all labels and have now only just started using JTAC in my missions and I've quickly found out how useless they can be when attacking anything other than static targets.

Technically JTAC is supposed to have a function of updating us of the target's status (Report BDA) but I can't seem to get it to work at all."

Use the Contact radio command.

Hi all,

I also play with labels off, but i use my wingman as a FAC/JTAC using the following work-around:

As soon as he starts calling out targets (which i can't find, but he can) i tell him to attack them (for example attack armor, depending on the ones he spotted) while i broadcast my SPI (as is he).

Then as soon as he sets his SPI on a target, i have it on my TAD as well.

I then tell him to rejoin, and break off the attack, so i can make the kill myself while he is anchoring high in the sky!!

Use the Contact radio command.

Contact radio command is for confirming targets with JTAC though isn't it? To make sure what you have set as SPI is the intended target?

What we are on about is that JTAC does not update you of your target's position as it moves away from the initial area reported in the 9-line. I would imagine in real-life a JTAC would do this if he knew his target was moving away from the target area. Not only that but the Report BDA (bearing, distance altitude?) command doesn't work, so if the pilot specifically requests for an update to his target's location he can't get it.

I'm going to report this in the AI bugs section because it wasn't fixed for the 1.1.0.9 patch and I'm not sure if its ever been working at all since the game's release.

Hmmm I thought BDA was Battle Damage Assessment. The manual isn't clear.

BDA is battle damage assessment, generally speaking a pilot will be to focused on post release evasion to watch for a weapon impact. Plus there is always the chance that the truck the JTAC is seeing, and the truck the pilot rolls in on are two different targets. It happens. I had a Cobra make a rocket attack on the wrong range during a CAX when I was on active duty with the Marines. One problem that is impossible to model is the communication during a 9 line is not so cut and dried. Yes the lines are important and given in that order but a good pilot/Jtac will talk more than is modeled. There are some good examples of pilot/Jtac cross talk on youtube. One excellent example of what not to do is cockpit vid of the Matt Hull incident in Iraq 2003. In real life if a target moves, or if a pilot has any extra questions he can always ask the Jtac.

I'll also add what has helped greatly in getting pilots on the right track in reality is the Sniper XR pod, which features a video down-link processor and antenna, which allows the pilot to send his pod video to the JTAC on the ground, who can watch what he is targeting.

Pretty f'n nifty.

Me, I'll settle for a JTAC that talks too much than one that doesn't talk enough.

Ah ok, thanks for the clarification regarding what BDA means. In that case looks like JTAC gives you a BDA after each run automatically, so the Report BDA command seems redundant in that case.

No labels no externals, learn to enjoy losing! Theres no challenge with labels in A10, call in SEAD/CAS, anchor at IP then use the TAD to hook target locations and mark. At the end you have a bunch of marks to explore with the TGP from a safe distance, thats what I do and if I get shot down so be it;)

I do think labels have a place in the simulation. For those who have just purchased the game, they are great for learning to use the weapons on the A10.

I used them extensively until I was up to speed on the "how" to successfully use the weapons rather than having to search for targets, then engage. Just one less frustration in the equation.

As people become more comfortable with one stage of the game, it is much easier to move to another stage.

I find there is enjoyment in flying with no labels, searching for targets, avoiding enemy threats, and using JFAC to input target coordinates; but at times feel the desire to turn labels on and just blow some stuff up!

I do have to admit the full labels are a little much, and prefer to use just the dots at 5000m myself. Just wish there was a way to force all clients to see only dots when labels are on.

I've recently experimented with, and become a fan of, modified labels. I'm using them from 5000 meters to about 1000 meters, for visually picking up close targets. I've turn them down to only single black dots, no text.

This I feel is a reasonable range from which a RL A-10 pilot could be expected to pick up a ground target's visual signature, knowing roughtly where to look. I think it benefits realism, not the other way around.

G

label help

Hi guys just been reading this thread and must admit to using labels (only had sim a few weeks)I now want to try with them off but think this would be a little ambitious on my part, just now anyway.

I looked at the file where to change the values and know it should be self explanatory but tbh I don't know where to start.

It would be great if somebody could help explain how to get say black dots to show up at say 5000m.

I made a backup of the file but at a loss as to what to change or not.

Any help would be grateful thanks.

Obviously if you bothered to read my post you would notice I was asking for a little help.not for you to state the fkn obvious!

What would you have me do?play the game from start with no labels and no exp?Yeah I can see how long that would keep me playing!:helpsmilie:

There are missions and targets withou jtac, and for those, the limitations of PC hardware/software become more obvious.
