EDIT 26/07 80000 is more than enough

After changing noise1back to 60000 to sharpen up the the ground textures, I wondered why the mountains still looked so blurry at the start of the CSAR mission.

I have worked out that you have to change 2 values, not just one.

You need to change distance10x10 too, here's how...

In the terrain settings file - DCS A-10C\Config\Terrain\Low/Medium/High.lua

Line 3 - Change 30000 to 80000

distance10x10 = 30000

Line 39 - Change 20000 to 80000

noise1back = 20000

Save the file and fire up the CSAR mission again...

Clear ground textures as far as the eye can see, with no visible performance hit.

Happy hunting

PS I run the sim at 2560x1600 resolution on 30" monitor.

Thanks toby23, but running at 60000 is too high on my end, at that setting i start to see an abrupt transition or tiling of the noise texture (watch this video in full screen and at highest resolution to see what i mean)
That's what Mustang posted some time ago.

if i drop it down to 40000 its perfect for me, its a seamless transition of textures
Is this gone now with both set to 100000 ?

I never had the problem at 60000.

Hi toby,

I see you use dual gtx 580. Would you please do me a favour and test your fps in any graphic intense situation with sli enabled vs. disabled? I wonder wether to buy a second gtx580 or not.

Thanks in Advance :)

I just want to jump in and say that

how the DCS engine renders the view-distance depends highly at the aspect-ratio and resolution you are running .

Here is a example (again... ;) ):

So your needed values could be absolute different to get the same visual effect that someone else is using.

Every-time someone posts some finding like this he should post his used resolution.

Unless this we will have no real comparability - only guidelines.

Boris.

I run at 2560x1600 resolution with 4x multisampling (in game) and 2x transparency supersampling (forced in control panel) as well as using custom distance settings. That's why I run SLI.

I did run with one GTX 580 but things slowed down too much at this high resolution.

Up to 1920x1200 you should be find with one GTX 580.

Good luck

so, increasing distance and noise1back both to 100k did not decrease my fps either.. so im staying with the new settings. thanks toby!

with tgp and mav on, i still get only about 25-35...

oh well, maybe the next 580 will help soon ^^

The microstuttering scares me off of SLI or Crossfire. I rather wait for the new HD 7000 gpus.

And yea, I tried it, too, and have no problems, thanks for sharing.

Scheffchen, don't go expecting too much more.

A second GTX 580 will really only be worth it if you run multiple monitors or at resolutions above 1920x1200.

A fast cpu, at least 4.5ghz, and fast ram is probably a better investment if you run below 1920x1200.

That is correct! After I OCed my 2500k from 3,3 to 4,4GHz I had a good boost in FPS (see sig for sys-specs).

What kind of big boost are you talking about, 5,10,15 or more FPS?

10-15, but when I OCed, I put up some gfx-settings at the same time, so I had no countable prior/after-value. For me it was at least a well noticeable boost, which I find was quite rare regarding my hardware upgrades in the past.

I actually get a performance impact with that. Also it seems that ED bumped their values themselves already. ;P
