CCIP bombing with mk-82's. Best setting thats aren't high drag

I have been trying to practice the CCIP method of dropping bombs (not using CR). I'd like to be able to "properly" drop the bombs without the Minimum range staple making the solution invalid (This always happens to me). Could people give me some guidance on things like the distance away from the target before starting the dive. The dive angle. Fuze settings. Minimum altitude etc etc. I hear alot of people who say its easier to manually drop bombs with CCIP than using the guided munitions, I am apparently the opposite.

The drop parameters depend on your situation. You get better accuracy with lower drop altitude but you also get shot at more so you choose the altitude to be as low as possible but not too low. As your drop altitude increases the required dive angle also increases as you need to get the pipper visible in the HUD. Higher dive angles also make it easier to time the pickle as the pipper travels slower over the target. I like to use about 30 degrees dive angle when dropping from 7000 feet above target altitude. Reducing speed with a climb just before dive helps to keep the altitude and not go too fast in the dive. I fly slightly off from the target at first so that I can see it. I project the HUD pitch ladder in my mind to where the 30 degree line would be and wait the target to be at about the same level before turning to target and diving. In the turn I place the target in the middle of the pitch ladder as that's where the PBIL is going to be when wings are level.

Well, I'm just like you then. I find ccrp easy and ccip more difficult.

I've had no problem whatsoever plinking tanks with MK-82's, especially from high altitude.

I usually start my dive from 16-20,000 ft.

By the time weapons are off, I may be at 12-14,000 ft.

Level off around 9-11,000 ft.

I'm guessing you don't fly with a lot of weather, do you?

dropping a mk82 from 12k feet is quite high I think

That's how they did it in Desert Storm.

must be static buildings or big/soft targets I think. You really have to hit a tank pretty close with mk82 to kill it and doing it with CCIP over 12k altitude requires great accuracy and nearly no wind situation which is doubtful.

anyways..doable but hard.

Keep in mind that in Desert Storm there were hundreds of AAA batteries, dozens of SAM batteries, etc. The way we play DCS A-10C is very different from real life.

In the sim, we make multiple passes on a single unit of tanks, etc. In real life, a 4 ship goes out with 6 MK-82's, drops all 6 from high altitude to avoid the threats, and RTB as fast as they can.

And yes, the targets being attacked were indeed tanks and other vehicles. Read a few books about A-10 operations in Desert Storm and you'll understand what I am saying.

Hitting a tank with A Mk-82 is hard, which is why you don't release just one ;)

I think that army uses MK82s alot since they have zillions of them in their inventory and try to deplete them fast, since GBUs are much more expensive and you also dont need a targeting pod. Just load the mk82s let them drop. Its like using A-10 as grenade launcher rather than a sniper.

Get the "HawgsmokeMils.pdf" in the documents collection thread, and try some of the included approaches (Z-Diagrams).

Here's a pic I made to illustrate how to perform a 45DB:

Just the 0.5nm turn-radius are wrong. We figured the correct offset to the target is approx. 1.8nm instead of 2.1nm (Base dist + turn radius).
