A small update.

I now have almost a full kit ready, what is missing are panels for the sides.

Sent the job to someone who can engrave in acryl so you can light up

panels from behind.

He will make the panels in black acryl and engrave the text and markings

so they show through.

If they do not become too expensive, I will use them in the kit.

But if the panels are to expensive i will make them in 1+2 cardbord.

Because many use different switches, and different size panels, you will have

the possibility to get a custom made kit.

For example, I got one frontpanel that is designed to fit one 27 "screen and two 7" Screen.

Im just gonna get one 27" and two 7" to see if it fit:)

But if someone got a 27" and two 7" let me know!!!

Heres an idea: fiberglass.

If you can find a roll of fiberglass sheets, and some resin, you can make that structure last a long time, and its not all that hard to apply.

Any idea yet on the pricing for the kit without the acrylic panels?

It's hard to say right now, I'm not done with the panels for the sides yet.

It all depends on how much material is involved.

For the panels need to be of the stronger material and it costs a bit more.

But I can imagine that it will be around 80-110 $, but this is just a guess

will know more when everything is ready.

It all depends on if you want panels or do not and if im gonna glue the parts for you.

Again this is just a guess.

I notice the similarity of the cardboard to sandwich panels used on aircraft (face sheet/hex cell/face sheet). Like the cardboard the panels are weak and damage prone at edges and cutouts, so a potting compound is used to strengthen them. Potting compound is basically just epoxy or other resin mixed with a light weight filler, like 'microballons' for r/c aircraft. Given you're working with cardboard a thick paste of Elmers and a cheap filler (flour?, corn starch?, sawdust, paper shredder droppings) might work.

Threaded inserts are also used for some attachments.

Routing the core can be as easy as chucking a hex key in a drill so the filler can get in.

If you do, make sure you get double the amount of square feet you need for the weft, which is 2 layers of cloth: one cloth fabric going from 1 oclock to 7 oclock, and another layer 4 oclock to 10 oclock.

It will be a lot of work, but it will be well worth it.

Linden, if using the fiberglass jumps the price way up, I'd rather do without. Quick question which I'm not sure if you mentioned, but I'm not at home and can't access pictures atm... Will the front panel have the 3D center area that holds the ADI/HSI and other indicators in the step they have? If you don't know what I mean I can send a pic when I get back home. If not, it's not a problem. I plan on trying to build each individual gauge later on, but may use a smaller monitor for certain things to start.

I guess if I had the option, I'd ask if you could make the front panel with all the normal cutouts that would just need the individual panels over them. I'll do the rest later (I also have the TM MFDs).

If you're guessing around $100 for the kit, definately count me in. I think even if the price goes up to $150 before shipping (which shouldn't be much to Germany) I could do it. Can't wait to see some more pics of the pit together with sides and all.

E Glass Fiberglass rolls arent that expensive...

http://www.shopmaninc.com/cloth.html#sglass

Scroll to the very bottom of the page, and you can get three 50 yard 12" rolls for $68 bucks. Thats a steal!

The Polyester resin runs usually for 120 for 1 US gallon, and MEKP catalyst usually runs for a few bucks a bottle...and 3 drops for 1 cup or resin is all you need. It shouldnt jack up prices that much, but Im just throwing that idea out there.

If you were just willing to sell the cut cardboards, the end users can have this option at the very least...even better, is that after its all said and done, one could have the option to paint it with enamels to their liking.

I think I know what you mean, I've done a front end that looks like the picture here.

On the left is the "original" on the right are made so they will fit a 27 "and 2 7" monitors behind.

And I will not use more parts than you need so this will become standard.

Since I am going to use screens behind, then you want not to have too thick material.

To my own I will probably have 12mm front.

if they really want this, because it will be too much work otherwise.

I think $100 for a kit is a fantastic value - It could even be a great jump-start for folks planning to customize or built from other materials down the line. I'd certainly be interested!

I have trouble getting access to cutting table, so i cant get any parts ready.

The cutter is working 24/7, so i need the put this project on hold.

Im gonna start getting parts out as soon i can get some time on the table.

But i can say when.

Sorry about this!!

Still have trouble getting time at the machine, but they are a bigger problem.

Since the cardbord is a living material, I will not be able to ensure that the parts

does not become crooked during delivery.

It all depends on the humidity.

I'm sorry to tell you that I have to cancel the job with this project!: (

This is because I now try to send parts to a friend who only lives 4 miles away "Shipping took 2 days"

and the result of the is not good!

All parts were giant crooked and looked like sh ..

Had even wrap them in plastic and really tried to keep out moisture, but it dident work.

So to all of you who have expressed interest, I'm sorry, but i can not guarantee good parts

so i have to cancel.

Hello Linden,

Sorry to hear such bad news for a great idea. Is it anyway anyone can take over your project? I would be interested if possible. Not sure what would be involved but you would always get credit for it.

Thanks
