Don't panic, but...

I've found CBU-97 behaviour a little weird in the video. It looks like BLU-108 dispensers directly impact on the ground instead of smaller skeets. No BLU-108 spin either. It seems a regular cluster bomb, with less (even more powerful) submunitions, but without any guide.

It might be AI only uses a simplify model for this weapon, I don't know... We'll clarify everything in a bunch of days (I hope!)

Regards!

Fly Multiplayer on some servers today and you just might have seen 'em in action. Very cool!

My DCS wish list: Su25, Su30, Mi24, AH1, F/A-18C, Afghanistan ...and frankly, the flight sim world should stop at 1995.

The viewing angle was deceiving :)

They actually explode well above the ground - looking at it from directly above as per the vid gives one the impression that they are impacting/detonating on the ground when they are actually not.

I don't understand it...

The first CBUs in the video are like the old model. -Simply a explosion and some sqhares falling off.

In 1:50 then you can see the new model.

Don't have all CBUs the same new model?

The first ones are CBU-103s, which are the WCMD version of the CBU-87. The new model is for the CBU-97 SFW (and the CBU-105, WCMD version thereof). Completely different weapon systems.

The CBU-87's a 'conventional' cluster bomb. The overhead view of the -97's doesn't really show the skeets well at all.

In simplification, yes.

Dragon, the first ones are indeed the old ones. They are as they should be. Then the Hog in the movie deploys the new, remade, awesome, 105's. (Or was that just a very well placed CCRP delivery of 97's? I never checked for visual distinctions on the CBU itself.)

But generally speaking: no, you don't have the new model on all "CBU's", because it's not all of them that should have it. The CBU's we are talking about are a very specific type that doesn't just drop a different type of munition compared to the others, the submunitions work in a radically different way - the "skeets" that scan the zone blow them and fuze when they see a target, sending what in a simplified way can be considered a nice shape-charge jet at them, sort of like RPG's. (I probably mangled that a bit, I'm not the expert on those weapons.)

I've just made a video that shows the various stages of the CBU-97s up close, assuming YouTube doesn't ruin it that is.

Aw you beat me to it, but mine's bigger. :P

Mine's in two parts: a single CBU-97 drop with slow-motion close-ups showing the mechanism, followed by a string of 6 in real-time.

Since you kind of need to watch it in high-def to see the submunitions I'll just link it rather than embed it:

Video:

The video description has links to the times of the actual bomb drops, for the chronically impatient. The start of the video tries to show the ground units formation, but I've also attached a screenshot of their layout in the mission editor for those who care about such things.
