I've got to the stage where I have got to grips with the basics, so I have been running the missions. I like to do this with labels off, to make it more realistic, problem is my situational awarenes is bad. Its not practical to orbit at every waypoint looking for targets, and when I do I cant find them, then theres the problem of friendlies. There must be steps to go from where I am, to where the more experienced pilots are, so whats your advice? thanks in advance.

.....problem is my situational awarenes is bad....

Multiplayer.

I learned all I know from my then SW Wing CO flying the Toad.....I'll never forget one sortie: Took off from Krymsk with a strike against Kerch AFB. I landed up at Sevastopol - that's how bad my situational awareness was when I first started :music_whistling:

Yep - flying with another is certainly one way to learn.

just train ... fly the mission over and over again ... you dont get routine from reading, and routine is what u need and that u will only get with practise.

but as a general hint u should have a look at the encyclopedia to learn the different vehicles .... thats probably one of the importen steps to "not shoot on friendlies"

for the search problem: its training and of course knowledge of ur 4 sensors u have (Mav,Tgp,TAD,Hud). if u know that - its no problem to get "SPI" on every target very quickly.

So thats the basics... and the rest ... its just pure searching and knowing in what generell direction to look(from the briefing)

but u cant learn sesarching .... u got to "do" it

There are two types of fighter pilots - those who have, and those who will execute a magnificent break turn towards a bug on the canopy . . . .

Hop online and fly. If it's a Sqd server join their TS to see if any is on.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

This is absolutely, totally and completely wrong and backwards - sorry :)

You learn theory and technique first until your eyes and ears bleed. In the real AFs you will find that pilots know what they are supposed to do to the point where they will write down their instructions with the exact punctuation it was provided to them - they have it all memorized. THEN they are allowed to touch the aircraft.

Sadly there is little schooling provided by flight sim manuals - it isn't the fault of flight sim makers - really, the education is strict, precise, and most of all very voluminous. A company could get into training pilots if they provided training like a real AF does. Even just the documents.

That said, documents for realistic tactics /can/ sometimes be found on the net if you look hard enough.

This part is correct.

This part isn't. There are definitely search techniques that you can learn, and experience just helps you make sure you've seen it done before, and you can fine-tune.

If you get frustrated whilst learning play a mission that uses a JTAC =) They will point you right onto targets so you don't need to hunt so much. Of course you'll still need to hunt for threats etc.

I got about 60% of the way there flying SP for about six months after the first beta came out (maybe averaged 6-8 hours a week)...repeating missions until I smoked them, looking at every YouTube tutorial out there, etc. Then joined an online squadron and quickly filled in the next 30%. The other 10% is still out there somewhere :-) Along the lines of the above posts, situational awareness skills are pushed greatly by MP, particularly where good comms are used. You are are constantly looking at your HSI and TAD to know where you are, where targets, are where friendlies/teammates are, etc. since you have to coordinate and make proper calls about your position, relation to targets position, friendlies, etc. It gets much more intense online (on good servers w/comms), and as a result, you learn that much faster. Plus, any question you have regarding the systems is usually quickly answered - lots of smart folks out there willing to help.

I, through my superior intellect, jumped in the A-10, with no prior reading or nuthin', and flew it perfectly with full knowledge of all the instruments, weapons and systems just by staring at the pit for exactly 14 minutes.

since that time, I have never once made any mistakes or had really any issues whatsoever.
