EventHorizon Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Im trying to fly missions at night but I cant see squat through the TPG. Its not clouds or anything like that, its just DARK. Viewing through the MAV is a bit better but Im right on top of targets by the time I can make them out. How do you get the TGP in FLIR mode... and also what is the default keyboard command for the night vision goggles... ?? One more thing.. I enjoy the campaign missions alot but at the end of the mission I more often than not want to re-arm and take out as many of those tanks and SAM's that just tried to pee in my cheerios yet I get no radio contact from ground crew when I return to base... what gives ?:pilotfly: By the way.. I get made fun of ALOT for playing this simulator but Just to make everyone else feel better I met my current girlfriend by playing this game (girls play this game too, and they tend to be the emo/geeky sort that I love)
EtherealN Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 I don't have the simulator on hand right now to check the default keys, but the key for TGP mode switching is called "boat switch" on the HOTAS throttle. So you find it under the HOTAS section in the control mappings. Regarding radioing ground crew - have you made sure that you are on the correct frequency for that aerodrome, and are you using the correct radio? EventHorizon Posted December 27, 2011 Author Posted December 27, 2011 Im using "easy communications" setting... And I still have no idea what HOTAS really means.. Im using a cheaper logitec joystick... so the tpg by default isnt in FLIR mode ? sometimes if I boot it up too fast I get a FLIR hot message and then i see the picture..

Zenra Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 As others said find the key commands to place the TGP in "black hot" or "white hot" mode; otherwise the TGP acts as a normal light camera ( CCD, or charge coupled device ). I don't use easy communications, but normally you have to place the rotary switch on the communications control panel into the "INT" position to talk with the ground crew. Be sur eto turn it back before trying to use radios during flight, though. Also, I believe that you need to be parked within a certain radius of the airport tower (don't know what the radius is) to rearm and/or refuel. Jona33 Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Goggles are RShift+H and Boat switch is Ralt+arrow keys (left/right/down.) Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing
Xxx Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 If in easy comms mode, usually, from the radio menu button(#) the Ground Crew will show in the menu. From there you just go through the menu options. The manual (page 652) states being at a Ramp, but you can re arm on the runway! You may also need to "upload" any weps re-load from the Update menu (DTS Upload),....Warrior has some good guides. But thats another subject. Ask away if you need help with this. On the subject of anyone poking fun at you flying this sim, not many can successfully fly and fight this aircraft in Sim mode. It takes dedication, skill and practice, so heed them not. This is not a FPS. ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]i7 Haswell @ 4.6Ghz, Z97p, GTX1080, 32GB DDR3, x3SSD, Win7/64, professional. 32" BenQ, TIR 5, Saitek x55 HOTAS. Tailgate Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 (edited) I believe that at least 1 friendly ground vehicle is required on base for re-arming and re-fueling. I found flying with the goggles challenging in getting the brilliance just right. I discovered that the green HUD lighting (daytime) is much better, the orange is totally unreadable. Ragtop Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 You mentioned that you don't really understand the concept of the HOTAS system. This is something very fundamental to the A-10, and almost every other modern combat aircraft. But I'll do my best to give a quick explanation in order to get you off the ground with it. HOTAS stands for Hands On Throttle And Stick, which is more than just an object in the cockpit, but infact an entire system of thought for the pilot. By this I mean that the HOTAS is the key to almost all of the avionics and weapon systems in the A-10. The idea behind this is that the pilot can access all of the vital systems and controls without ever moving their hands off of the Stick and throttle. Most pilots will refer to the stick and throttle as the HOTAS because of this. Of course this has many benefits, not limited to the ability to utilise the switches under heavy G loading, and very quick control without having to move around the cockpit. The HOTAS features a large range of switches and buttons, all of which are physically different, so the pilot can differentiate between them purely by feel, without having to look at it. Of course there isn't nearly enough space on the HOTAS to put an individual switch for every system. As such, a lot of switches will be utilised by multiple systems, dictated by what the SOI (Sensor of Interest) is. For instance, if you have the TGP set as your SOI, the Slew hat on the Throttle will move the TGP head around, but if you have the TAD set as your SOI, it will move the cursor around, and so on! Therefore, unlike in other sims like LockOn/FC1-2, which have keystrokes for every single system feature in the cockpit, DCS gives you the option to assign the HOTAS buttons. For further information I recommend you run the HOTAS fundamentals mission built into the Training section of DCS. 1 476th vFG Alumni

Xxx Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Like I said in my post above. The people poking fun at him are likely the people who look at the level of complexity in this simulation and give up.:music_whistling: There is only one female fighter pilot in the RAF ( that I know of) and one in the RCAF ( again that I know of), maybe he's met one of them:smilewink: Lucky Guy!;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]i7 Haswell @ 4.6Ghz, Z97p, GTX1080, 32GB DDR3, x3SSD, Win7/64, professional. 32" BenQ, TIR 5, Saitek x55 HOTAS. leafer Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 There's a lady named Cat at simhq that was into flight sim. I haven't been to that site in a year or more, so don't know if she's still around. I'm sure she's the same Cat that I played Fighter Dual ladder against many, many years ago. Just saying there are lady flight simmers, but probably out of fear they don't announce their gender. :D I know the lady didn't need to go through that, but the poor guy, man. Damn I'm old, I don't find this stuff funny anymore. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
