MTFDarkEagle Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 I'd be quite interested in a REX:Essentials vs. AS2012 comparison. Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
hitman Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 AS2012 was horrible compared to REX. I uninstalled that almost immediately.
MTFDarkEagle Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 In what regard? The weather engine of active sky is pretty much considered the best for FSX available. I have both products, but my preference is to active sky 2012 at this time because of the nice textures and the great weather engine. Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
hitman Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 The textures for AS2012 are 1 dimentional from what Ive seen and heard. Yeah, the weather updater was pretty awesome, but REX just seems so much more dynamic than that.
MTFDarkEagle Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Disagree. Having experienced both products I have to say that AS2012 is better than rex2 in both clouds and weatherengine sides. Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
hitman Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Honestly I cant even tell the difference between the AS2012 clouds and the default FSX clouds. If I see clouds popping up at ground level, then theres something wrong with it. And yeah, REX does that crap too. Clouds are the one thing I really dislike in any flight simulator because nobody can get them right.
hitman Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Is there a torrent for this REX Essentials somewhere? This ftp crap is slower than my 12 yr old retarded niece.

Rusty_M Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 I missed all the info about upgrading and just installed, then uninstalled REX 2.0 + Overdrive. I might have done it wrong, but it's still an improvement. I swear REX 2.0 never had clouds drifting across the sky. This did. All I did was a quick 20 minute flight around my local airport (EGPH) The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine! http://www.twitch.tv/rusty_the_robot https://www.youtube.com/user/RustyRobotGaming
cichlidfan Posted May 28, 2012 Author Posted May 28, 2012 Looks good! Waiting for the upgrade for Overdrive myself. rattler Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Hi Guy's : From information gathered form other users of FSX deluxe with or without acceleration pack, the environment we fly in needs or should I say looks better with a combination of add ons, as you probably are aware. I use GEX, UTX Canada,REX+ overdrive and ASE. GEX and UTX for ground, REX+overdrive for roads, clouds etc. and ASE for weather. This gives me an environment pretty much to what I would expect to find. That said, other products used in combination do the exact same. From what I have been told and have read about, this seems to be the case. Some prefer to use different software to achieve the same goals. Now mind you I am new at FSX but not Flight Sims. Hope this helps.
Rusty_M Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 I'm sure the overdrive upgrade will then be available for essentials. As I find essentials better than REX 2.0 with overdrive, I've gone for it, and am happy with it. Looked amazing tonight. The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine! http://www.twitch.tv/rusty_the_robot https://www.youtube.com/user/RustyRobotGaming

Spetz Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 (edited) AS2012 was horrible compared to REX. I uninstalled that almost immediately. I had that initial impression too, then started messing around with it. Granted, this is for FSX, not Prepar3D (Can't justify the cost). I found the best compromise was to use AS2012 weather engine with REX 2.0 OD for the textures. This combined with the ORBX NA products = one heck of a nice scene to fly in (I fly from CYYJ with FSPassengers X). Eventually I reverted back to using only REX 2.0 OD with real weather enabled and PIREP's. But AS2012 is a good product too. Some pics of REX 2.0 OD and ORBX, some AS2012 in there too.. (AMD E8400 OC'd to 3.6Ghz (dual Core) Single GTX 260 8Gb RAM 850 Watt PSU Gigabyte P5 something or other mobo Win 7 Ultimate x64) Edited May 29, 2012 by Spetz 1
pixelpilot Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 where did everyone buy it from? Did you all get it from the flight sim store (based in Australia) RustyM specifically to you, how much did it cost by the time all currency changes and taxes were applied (assuming you got it from the fs store) and by the way I'm an EGPH flyer too, the VFR vol 8 photo scenery for Scotland South is pretty impressive just need some beautifully rendered shoddy Scottish weather to go with it now.
Rusty_M Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 (edited) I think there's a converter on the Flight Sim Store site. That wasn't far off the amount I ended up paying in Paypal. It was a couple of months ago for me, so I can't remember the exact figure. I want to say around GBP 28 though I could be getting mixed up with GEX or UTX You'll get lovely shoddy weather with it too :D. It makes a fantastic difference from the FSX default weather.
