Hi Guys

Just got home from an air-show and Boeing brought their f-18 sh demo sim.

Got in line to try it, the kids behind me were going "are you in que" - "yes (so stop poking me you little...;))

Got about 5 minutes and then about 15 minutes with their software guy.

The setup was a sit in cockpit and a curved screen, run on 3 projectors.

The flight setup was airstart and 4 baddies inbound 20 miles. they were non aggressive and there was no crash model..just fly through scenery. With the instructors help i got one with a aim-9. turned to chase the second one and asking the guy for various controls ( the pit was dark, time was tight). Got a second baddie with the gun :).

Controls were stiff as hell (joystick) Tried to do a break-turn and i had to work at getting the stick in the lap.

Funny thing happened as I got in the seat, a official said " the next to try is the colonel's kid. So the colonel watched my short flight and after my gunkill, I did a victory roll to his amusement. I then did a fast low level (map was california coast). Trip ended and i got out, the colonel caught me while i was talking to thier software guy. "you tried this before"...- "yes allot of sim time" i said. " nice job" and then he moved on. As you can tell its very hard to put down all the impressions of 5 minutes down ;).

While i was waiting to fly I thought " you must talk to the software guy on the laptop". I of course had one question....Who made this software. I was told that the sim i just tried was the actual f-18 SH sim software and that it was a inhouse Boeing project. Did say the word dcs and he said nope, all inhouse for what i just tried.

The airshow was low cloud cover and most displays where just flyby's :(.

Later i found the f-35 sim but that was closed to the public :( .

Overall a good day none the less. :)

Hope they're at Farnbrough....;)

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

Does it looked like Prepar3D(FSX)?

Nice story and the kids must be thinking: Why the heck this old man want to play with the simulator? :D

Yeah they were looking at me funny. Gave them this look: "I'm a pilot(not) and I know what i'm doing(lie nr.2), you little x-box sucking- snot-nosed waste of jet -fuel you...get!!! before I afterburn you back into the twinkle in your dad's eye"....

They said nothing after that look :D :joystick:

Congrat macedk, must have been a hell of experience! Some time ago I visited one fighter-squadron airbase and had a chance to try their mil-grade MiG-29 training simulator. Luckily I got a little more time (thought it was still too short!).

It was of similar setup: huge hemisphere (I guess diameter 6-7 meters), 6 projectors. Viewing range about -110/+110 degree (left/right), -20/+100 degree (down/up). Pit itself looked like real 29, just cut off somewhere behind pilots seat. All controls were quite stiff (THW is kids' toy compared to it). What surprised me were strong "kicks" I got into stick whenever I tried to pull +10g. My hand ached after a few of them! After a few minutes I felt very comfortable, and even achieved a few "victories" (AI was really dumb, but this was above all flight-sim, not fight-sim)...

I told the mil-guys watching over I'd like to have something like this in my living-room. They said no problem, a few million $ and I can have it. Seems you can still buy everything in Russia... :-)

Nearest I got to that was laughable. I went to RMA Sandhurst and was at a stand with the Army Air Corps who had a seat, stick and a rotating disc with a ball bearing enclosed on it. The idea was to balance the BB in the centre of the disc. I got it sitting still in the middle so the guy kicked it to move it again!

Things have moved on since 1991!!

I did at Leuchars back in the late 80s early 90s, still got a cap badge from him too :)

Also got a go in the Lightning cockpit and a F4 Phantom, then after many years of trying, finaly in the Tornado sim :D
