That pad is a good idea. I know folks who want to demo their device likely don't want face funk on it...

I'm going to post these things here b/c I don't want to post in other areas where they may be misplaced:

- I found a big white box around my bird in a training mission:

dcs2014-09-2817-28-46-55.png

It wasn't there in other missions...known issue? The box looked like a larger version of the rounded square in the HUD on the SU25 at the start of the basic nav training mission.

- Apparently the Mig29G (?) has a flat cockpit with a flat pilot. Which ones have the 3d cockpit?

- I like DCS's controller support! As a manufacturer of computer gaming controllers, this is a big deal...we tested DCS and confirm that it offers native support for our 64button controller as well as deep support for multiple controllers. Bravo to the developers for that!

- I ran some fraps benchmarks and am getting 90+ fps on the rift, so frame rates are likely not the culprit of my judders. Hopefully they will continue to polish the support of this device.

I dont know about that box. It looks a bit like a kubrickian monolith :) Off top of my head, the Ka-50 Black Shark has a 3d cockpit and pilot. All of the paid modules are 3D too but may not have a pilot.

Talking of controllers, do you by any chance have any plans to make a heli cyclic and collective? At the moment there is very little affordable choice out there, with a good setup being easily upwards up $1000 :( I think there's quite a few folks that would rather fancy a nice looking controller for their Huey or Black Shark :D Is force feedback tough to do? That would be awesome for the trim systems.

Does anyone know how to make the zoom function with the Oculus? Even without the rift this function is essential to be able to see targets and having it disabled with the rift is limiting.

Also is there any way to move the mouse around to click things in the cockpit?

Otherwise very immersive - can't wait for EDGE and consumer RIFT.

The white bars are the sides of the gate at the start of the training lesson.

Zoom currently does not work. I have mixed views about it. I'd imagine that in the rift zoom would be very unrealistic and possibly quiet jarring. It may even cause motion sickness.

You have two options for the mouse.

- run windowed mode (possibly poorer performance and 60hz refresh rate)

Or

-set your desktop monitor to primary.

-select a mission from the main screen.

-as the mission is loading right click your main display and select screen resolution.

-set rift to primary.

-after ending a mission turn off the rift to return the mouse to the GUI on the main monitor.

A zoom option is needed at least with dk1 and dk2.

Daniel Church coded a patch for Prepar3d to suppport DK2 and he included zoom option. That´s a great idea, and you feel comfortable with it into the cockpit to see altitude, speed, etc.

@CookPassBabtridge - looks like SithSpawn knows...We have no plans to offer flight controllers. CH Products should have been offering one all along, and I agree there is a hole in the market for such a controller.

@Sithspawn - gotcha. I was thinking it was related to the training mission.

I'm in the hanger until something happens with this judder. It's not working for me :( I'm ok to wait it out, though...been waiting a long time to get this far :)

Try setting your primary monitor to 75 hz at any resolution in my case it was 1280x1024. Leave all DCS graphics settings low at 1920x1080 res. It seems in my case the rift was running at a 60 hz refresh rate(primary monitor setting) which made it pretty horrible to look at.

Regarding zoom, its actually quite tolerable in the Rift. As mentioned above its in P3D and I also experienced it in a HL2 mod, Estranged. Just feels like looking through binoculars.

@Derek, thats a shame. As you say it would be good to have a CH or maybe even TM offering.

Just got my Rift DK2 and fired up DCS. My first impressions after a short stint of non-combat flying in the Su-25T.

You think a DCS 6DOF cockpit is detailed UNTIL you see it in the RIFT. The Su-25T has a well earned reputation as a nice 6DOF cockpit but in the RIFT every smooth or flat surface really stands out and looks unnatural. I wonder if even Normal mapping in EDGE will be enough of a solution for cockpit objects viewed in VR.

It could be that millions of polygons is the only solution that will look right because flat textures look like cheap hacks in the RIFT. A higher resolution in the RIFT might actually make flat surfaces look even more flat :0 I'll be checking this thread again to see if anyone has commented on the Mig21BIS cockpit in the RIFT. I thought the detail being put into it was silly but I'll have to rethink that.

Everyone who says the RIFT is not good enough for flying in DCS is to some extent right at the moment. For me the minmum level would be a crisp and readable HUD. It would be interesting to see a DCS: RIFT module not trying to model something real but just making a usable VR flight experience in the DCS engine. This would be worth having.

What seems to work well is the 1:1 mapping of your head movement . Being able to look behind you by looking behind you is nothing less than awesome. It is that good.

I also tested out using the RIFT as a TIR replacement. I installed Opentrack and wore the RIFT like a cap with my 30" monitor as the display. After setting the curves in Opentrack - perfect tracking. It works well.

Hmm sounds odd. I have not tried the Su-25, but all the other cockpits look fantastic. I have sat in the A-10, the Sabre, the Mi-8, Black Shark and Huey, and they all look better in the Rift because everything now has relief and texture.

The only caveat to that is when you are sitting 'back' from the panels, and things can get a kind of halo around them due to the resolution, but lean in and they look incredible, especially things like altimeters and the warthog's MFCD's / buttons.

I will have a sit in the Su-25T tonight and see what its like. I tend to ignore it because I dont have the paid module and dont fancy all those keyboard shortcuts (I am an inveterate switch-flicker :) ). I think I know what you mean about flat surfaces though - the Mi-8 has a few of these and they don't look as good. Perhaps busier cockpits hide the effect.

I think that 6dof cockpit look very well and it's outstanding The sense of been inside....

The res of dk2 is not so defined but with some tweak and some lua editing you Can have a more readable hud.

The freedom to really look around and turning your head Can improve your flight abilities, lot of maneuver became easy and realistic.

If you make some tweak you Can use The rift to Fly and also to combat.....

this looks cool. we need hands in DCS :)

Hi there,

Has anyone DCS + AMD Graphic + DK2 running??

At the moment, I didn't get it works...

Thanks!

You'd Likely have to wait for the DCSW 2.0 / EDGE /DX 11 Update

Does anyone have tips on running the Mig-21 with the DK2? It's a judder-fest for me at the moment despite running everything on low.

I'm running a i5-3450 locked at 3.9ghz and GTX760

Really??????? And it works with NVIDIA?

Thanks.

AFAIK it's a AMD + DX9 issue, Nothing to do with DCS.

Ok, I found an old Nvidia 260 GTX. DCS is running so fine with a low graphic configuration.

I plug Oculus, set extended mode, set 1 camera & oculus inside simulator, but it still not working. I have a big green square, blinking screen and many dot ...

So, what is the procedure to setup the oculus with nvidia??

Thanks!

Try making sure the rift is setup right in the Nvidia control panel settings.

I'd also change my primary monitor to a 75hz refresh rate at any resolution so the rates match. It made a huge difference for me. Inside DCS leave it at 1920x1080 for the rift. Also, are you pausing the service under tools advanced pause?(configuration utility)-before starting dcs...and uncheck dk1 support box in rift display mode...mine always checks itself back by itself and I go to a 3dof cockpit instead of 6dof...it's weird. If it happens just restart everything. also since it's two monitors remember to mouse right to rift, left to primary or vise versa depending on your setup.

I've been meaning to ask everyone this, what's everyone's eye relief setting on the dial set to, and does your dial setting change with too much force applied when putting the rift on/off?

I have it all the way out and not too tight on the straps. Seems to give the best perceived FOV as the black borders aren't as visible.
