tonym Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 When attacking a ground target, the TGP diamond can be moved over the target & locked. When the TGP is in air to air mode, how do you know where it is looking? There is no obvious marker in the HUD.
Eddie Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 The TGP SA cue is the only visual reference to TGP LOS in A/A. Remember that the A-10C is not designed for A/A operations and therefore the TGP A/A function, while usable, is not really a function that is utilised IRL. The A/A function of the LITENING (and other pods) is mainly designed to be slaved to a fighter's RADAR or other sensor in order to allow visual identification etc at longer ranges. It's not a search system.

Set your Depressible Pipper to the TGP LOS. That way you will always know where it is looking, provided that the TGP is boresighted, that is. As mentioned previously in other threads, the Pipper will then function as a rudimentary yet very effective Air to Air sight. Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? Aries Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 It's not a search system. But it is... The "white hot" ones that were found and were touched by the Sidewinder's bite sure do know it... :smilewink: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] ...the few, the proud, the remaining...
marcos Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 The TGP is virtually worthless in A-A mode, just use the HUD with conical scan. The aircraft has no radar, so A-A is not something it does well.
159th_Viper Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 The TGP is virtually worthless in A-A mode..... For you, maybe. Good luck with locating and tracking targets BVR with conical scan ;) Oh yes, it actually does A-A quite well enough in capable hands. Sounds like you need more airtime. marcos Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 For you, maybe. Good luck with locating and tracking targets BVR with conical scan ;) Good luck locating them with TGP unless you already know exactly where they're coming from, in which case it defeats the object anyway. TGP does not locate aircraft, you do, so to locate them with TGP, you first have to know where to point it, which you don't except in a set scenario game, and if you already know where to point it, just point your aircraft and conical scan in that direction. I know how to use it, I just never do, because it usually means you're staring into a screen and miss the blinking obvious that you can see with the naked eye. Jesus, if TGP was any good, they'd never have invented radar, they'd just have stuck numpties out on the beaches with telescopes.
Eddie Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 they'd just have stuck numpties out on the beaches with telescopes. Well actually, prior to (reliable) RADAR in WWII that's exactly what we did. :D But in all seriousness, your post is spot on from a realism/common sense standpoint.

Mohamengina Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 If you want to know where the TGP is tracking when tracking aircraft, then simply use air to ground mode. Works like a charm.
marcos Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 If you want to know where the TGP is tracking when tracking aircraft, then simply use air to ground mode. Works like a charm. Now that could actually be useful. Not sure it should work though. May be a bug.
Eddie Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 A contrasting shape is a contrasting shape. The TGP doesn't care if it's in the air or on the ground. The issue is holding a fast moving object in the tracking gate long enough in A/G mode to actually gain a point track, an issue that is not present in A/A mode.
Echo38 Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 (edited) So, theoretically, couldn't you locate a target in A/G mode, then flick over to A/A mode to track? (Not that I'd ever use the TGP to try to find an air target, for the reasons Marcos mentioned.) Edited September 5, 2012 by Echo38
Tailgate Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 AtA mode also picks up moving ground vehicles, I noticed that when I was trying to lock up a chopper.

(Not that I'd ever use the TGP to try to find an air target, for the reasons Marco mentioned.) Maybe. I'm not really sure why the A-A mode can't work on a point track once it has a lock. I'd still prefer a radar, even a bad one.
