So after many, many runs through the aircraft startup tutorial, I finally got up the nerve and grabbed a startup checklist, created a fast mission from a cold start, and did it on my own.

I still found myself fumbling around through the cockpit trying to find all the correct switches, but I did manage to get it started up, took off, flew around and landed again.

Of course, I was supposed to navigate to somewhere and blow something up somewhere of course, but I have not even begun to try to learn any of that stuff yet. But I do feel a great sense of accomplishment, in being able to get it started up and flying on my own!

So much to learn, so much to do - whew, what a sim. Thankfully I have some time off coming the latter part of this month and can hopefully really get into learning some of the rest of the stuff. I really look forward to the day, I can load up a mission, and manage to complete it with hopefully destroying something. I think I am a ways off from that though LOL.

IMHO the best way to master the A-10 in full extend is to practise one step at a time : STARTUP-TAKEOFF AND LANDING - NAVIGATION - MFCD and CDU - CHOICE OF WEAPONS - ATTACK RUNS - MISSIONS (not limited) ! Concentrate on one thing at a time to get finally the full picture as to act in every single situation !!

Something I've found useful is as I play, When notice a symbol on the HUD or a function I >think< I might want / need to do that I'm not failure with I jot it down on a piece of scrap paper then look it up in the manual when I have some spare time...

If ya get a chance find the book A-10s over Kosovo. I flew for 22 years on the KC-10 and found myself quite busy at times...

NOTHING like what Hawg pilots deal with on a day to day basis when actually in combat... That was also very humbling.

Good luck and enjoy!

I wouldn't wait until the end of month to continue. Even if you put an hour in now and then to practice it will help cement what you already learned

Thanks for the tip, I will check those videos out.

Just created a fast mission from ramp start, made it through all the startup procedures ok this time, even must have done something right with the radios, as I heard chatter of folks engaging targets - woohoo!

Guess I better start learning some other things now!

Personally, I like to throw in emergency procedures and bad weather conditions as soon as possible. Kill an engine or switch off the IFFCC mid flight and try to get the bird down safely. Such things pay off later when the enemy starts to install 23mm holes without written authorization. :megalol:

Yes I will have to give that a try as well. I have yet to go through any navigation training, created another fast mission from a ramp start again, got it cranked up and in the air just fine - and even managed to fly to my steerpoints and back to the airfield, landed, and parked! Of course, I had no idea how to destroy anything, but I feel like I am actually making progress now, time to hit some more training.

Thanks,
