falcon_120 Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 Ok, I'm thinking about getting a new card because my hd5770 is obviusly not that good. But my budgetis not much more than 250$,so my question is: Which is the best card around that price that you would recommend for DCS taking into account that I only run on one Monitor and though I would like things on high for me that it is not that important? In other words ,which is the first card that you can say ok,from this card and above, with one monitor is already overshooting.
Pilotasso Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 What are your PC specs? choosing a GFX depends of your machine. :) .
falcon_120 Posted December 23, 2012 Author Posted December 23, 2012 Sorry you're right :). I have a phenom x4 955 BE at 3.2ghz,my mother board is a gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H and 8gb of ram.
Pilotasso Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 Your system is somewhat old for DCS. DCS is CPU limited (and AMD CPU's are slower), so buying a new GFX will return limited results, I would continue to save money untill you could afford a new computer. An affordable card would be an NVIDIA 660 (non TI) or an ATI equivalent, but as I said you need a new CPU (and everything else with it) to back it up. .

falcon_120 Posted December 24, 2012 Author Posted December 24, 2012 How about getting a AMD FX Series FX-8350 4.0Ghz 8x, the socket is AM3 that I think is compatible with my mobo. Any one with that processor that can tell how it goes with DCS? The price is around 190 euros here in my country so is more affordable than changing the graphic card.

Any one with that processor that can tell how it goes with DCS? The price is around 190 euros here in my country so is more affordable than changing the graphic card. FX8350 is AM3+, and most AM3 Boards stopped getting BIOS Updates for the new FX Processors, Double check that it's on the CPU supported list, and that you have the latest bios. Also, De-ACT before upgrading CPU, CPU is Automatic 13 points off StarForce, and will goof alot of stuff (i had to wipe Reg Entries and re-activate after upgrading my CPU from 8120 to 8350). As it stands now, 8350 is far superior to anything else on AM3+. 8120 and 8150 Overclocked to 4GHz still cant match my 8350 @ stock 4 Ghz settings in any benchmark. Though DCS wont use more than 2 cores, so, those other 6 are wasted. What CPU do you have now?, I'd think the 5770 is your bottleneck, DCS is GPU Horsepower hungry, you can get by with a dual core @3.0Ghz as long as your GPU has the Power to Render everything. falcon_120 Posted December 24, 2012 Author Posted December 24, 2012 I have a phenom x4 955BE overclocked to 3,7ghz.In general I can run the game well, with scenes and visible range on high and textures and the rest on low,but as the mission gets a bit serious with lots of units my pc starts to struggle a little, for example in the A10C campaign missions, though lowering some options I can play them ok.
SkateZilla Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 CPU isnt the problem. how much ram? 5770 is your Rendering Bottleneck. Rhinox Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 CPU isnt the problem. how much ram? 5770 is your Rendering Bottleneck. Depends on gfx-settings. But he can easily find it with "AMD System Monitor":, let it run in background (iirc it can export data into file too), start DCS and let it run for some time. Then he can see cpu/gpu usage, main-ram/gpu-memory usage, etc. The one topped at 100% is probably bottleneck...
falcon_120 Posted December 24, 2012 Author Posted December 24, 2012 Thanks a lot guys, I'll have a look,by the way I have 8gb ram 1600mhz,so I don't think that is the bottleneck.

Thanks for the tip about AMD System Monitor, I just used it to determine how my own 5770 weighs up against the i5-750 in campaign for bottlenecks. I too suffer dips of FPS to about 10fps (from 30-40fps) when looking in the direction of battle. Using Georgian Hammer mission 1 as a benchmark, seems the CPU averages about 60%, the GPU about 75% with the GPU frequently peaking in the high 90's. The CPU rarely peaks over 80% I wonder if the OP has been able to run similar tests. I'd be keen to see the results.
