"Why Nevada?" - Mission Potential for the Forthcoming Terrain

--Normandy map--. This will satisfy the "Cold War gone hot" junkies like myself, and also making the entire DCS: WWII project complete. It would be a true, dual use theater.

Cities & infrastructure in 1944 and 1982 would look very different, though. But I guess it would be the best surrogate for a modern european map.

The map could be Jamaica for all I care (and actually I WOULD love that, since that would mean Cuba and maybe even Florida, with a ton of blue water ops)... But I am slightly biased there... It's where I am from.

I am just glad that:

1- We are getting a new map! (Always wanted to fly to Vegas... now I can)

2- DCS World 2.0 (nuff said)

3- Eventually it will lead to such goodies as Hornet, MAYBE Tomkitty, and of course dual cockpits.

This thread got a lot of attention for being dead and buried for 2 years  ,

but I think Nevada will work out very well. Also I bet it was a helpful stepping stone to creating future maps such as the future Red Sea one.

I looking for a 'proper' ground warfare action in Nevada, aka Operation Desert Sabre style.

I thinks it's great that the Nevada map/terrain is being produced because that is a terrain/geology that is currently missing in the Caucus map.

I can only hope that DCS World 2 will continue to allow us to ReName Air Bases to whatever we want AND it would be great if we could turn other Bases On/Off ... or ... even to be able to place and airfield wherever we want.

By being able to turn Bases On/Off and/or to be able to relocate bases ... as well as re-naming bases allows us to create missions "Anywhere in the World" ... with a little bit of imagination.

Only if we can toggle Las Vegas, too. :P

Actually, I meant to include - the ability to ReName Towns/Cities etc as well .... in my last post.

So YES to toggling LV as well.

Yeah this would be such a killer option for mission designers.

*Grimes below is correct* this would be a killer option for mods.

So you want a terrain editor that is built for usability and doesn't require other programs to interact with in order to effectively create a terrain based on an existing mesh? I understand the value of such an idea, but on the scale of a DCS map I don't know how practical it would be. I mean its basically a new map once you edit it and a TON of data needs to be transferred to the client machine to translate that no matter what. On the Caucuses some objects are used on the map well into the thousands. The smallest of towns that I could visually find have at least 15 objects in them. Modify that town in any way and that data starts to add up quickly. What I'm trying to get at is that you are selling the idea as a mission design feature, when in reality its a modification.

For the record, if a certain bug gets fixed you can easily delete detectable objects from the map. However it would leave the city streets, rail tracks, trees, and ground textures intact so it would look extremely odd.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

My idea isn't to effectively change anything. Just the ability to customize Town and Airport names would be great just so we could create real world missions.

I don't think geographic accuracy is necessary (at least not for me).

But if I could rename a few of the existing cities I could create completely different missions based on other places on earth ... without having to do anything to the mesh.

I get it though. It may well be easier said than done and give an inch and we might ask for a mile.

I'm NOT complaining about anything now or about to in the future. I'm grateful for all that you have and will provide in future.

But it seems to me that we can already ReName Air Bases ... Can't we ?
