I tried using the hat clip once, but it kept slipping and springing off my hat. X)

As I did not buy the track clip pro this brings up a good question. Hat clip or Track clip Pro? Is it a big difference. I don't mind wearing a hat. Mostly interested in accuracy of the sensor.

With the hat clip you are relying on reflection... The pro clip has leds and is the light source. It is more precise IMHO...

Go to the Camera view screen and see how your camera is picking up the hat clip reflective surfaces. There you can see how strong it is and assure proper alignment

I received my TrackIR 5 yesterday. Pretty awesome device. It probably would have been better if I got it sooner, before I honed my mouse look skills to such a fine point. I seem to be hitting a point where I'm beyond the range of movement and then it snaps my view back. Also side to side movement has been a challenge... I KNOW there is an enemy behind that headrest. I'm sure it's part of the learning curve. I'm going to try a few combat proven profiles to see if it improves my experience. As far as casual flying...very impressive right out of the box.

Hey Merlin...go to the camera view screen in the software and check your alignment...you can also tell when you move if you are losing light from any of the three...adjust until it is happy and you should be able to look all around side n down no problem... Keep at it..you will get there.

Yes, I agree that's why the pro clip is better, it's powered. It doesn't cost that much more than the base TrackIR so it's a good investment.

I've always used the hat reflectors and they work great. Anything that doesn't require additional electrical power is a plus to me.

A few things for users of the basic Trackclip:

1. No berets, tams, or watchcaps. Real (not straw) cowboy hats are borderline, unless you've and any potential witnesses have had a few adult beverages. I don't even want to think about trying to mount it on my headset--the neighbors already have too much to talk about. Visors are ideal--get the black one; I got the white one five years ago, and it's gotten a bit grayish, to be charitable

2. If, like me, your primary 'cockpit' is located near a window, make sure that the blinds don't leak. Little rays of sunshine will invariably appear at the most critical moments, and the effect is a lot like an epileptic fit.

3. Make sure that the area behind you is free of mirrors, remote controlled CD players, TVs and pets with reflective eyes (my ex's cat occasionally looked over my shoulder, resulting in the aforementioned epileptic-like fits, but I think he was her demonic familiar, so your mileage may vary)

4. The Pro uses the power from the USB port, and it has an extension that allows you to use the same port for your TrackIR or your headset without any loss of function.

Used properly, the TrackIR is somewhere between sliced bread and a night of frenzied sex with a hot young nymphomaniac (if I remember correctly) for the dedicated simmer; I thought I was okay with the POV hat and a little left handed mouse wiggling, but I was wrong.

cheers

Nice entertaining overview. Well done, sir. Some good info in there. After trying out a profile supplied by my flying buddy, Fakum, I have a much greater appreciation for the device. Then I did a little fine tuning myself and it pretty much feels like I'm actually in the cockpit looking around now. And even in combat flying I don't seem to ever hit any limits or cause myself to get a little dizzy as I did early on with it. I love the fact that you can lean forward and back if you feel like inspecting a gauge a little closer or something. I'm perfectly happy with the basic track clip at this point. I dedicated a comfortable black baseball cap to the cause and it pretty much blends in. Also I have to say, the calibration/customization tool is incredibly powerful and really makes the product shine.

Worth every penny.

I do not seen in the setup tab where you can select DCS P51. It shows DCS A10. Will the TrackIr 5 work with this Game or do I need to get an update somewhere?

Hi lbmoore. You sure can use it with DCS P-51 Mustang and it is awesome. DCS P-51 is not listed in the "Titles Tab", but you can save your own profiles by using the "Profiles Tab " and when done making alterations, use the "Save As " function to save your profile .

Or, in the "Profiles Tab " you can look in the left Side panel of The program and it shows a small checkbox labelled " Exclusive ". And to its left, you can select from the drop down list, The Profile you wish to use. If you have used the "Save As " Function and have created your own profile, just select that profile in the drop down list and click the checkbox next to it marked "Exclusive". This will make your Tracking unit work in that profile only, not matter which title you own or load.

Since setting it up with the P-51, I have been totally absorbed in the sim and learning sooo much more about Trimming the Plane, Maintaining Level flight and Constant Speeds. As well as about 10 other things too long to list here.

I have meant to post in here, about how much of a difference TrackIr can make, but got so carried away enjoying the new world, that I just hadn't spent much doing anything else.

I've only had it a few days, but I already know I can't do without it anymore. I'm a total addict now. thought it was just being able to look around that made it cool. I never realized just how much more 'aware' and 'vigilant' you can be with TrackIr.

I can't wait till I have it all trimmed out and have more practice with it. But so far, my ability to control the Mustang has come forward in leaps and bounds, just in the last few days :O

Thanks Spasticatedtoad for your much needed help. I am trying to learn the P51 and so far taxing the P51 has been a challenge so far. Then add in the set up for the TrackIR has been a bigger challenge. I am looking forward to getting in the air and doing some dogfighting. I have watched vids on YouTube that keep me inspired. I can start it up now so that is a positive. Once again thanks!

There is not a P-51 choice in TIR profiles because it is not a separate sim as far as TIR is concerned. All TIR sees is the main sim, DCS World, which it thinks is 'Black Shark'. Assign your desired profile to 'Black Shark' and it will automatically be used for DCS World.

Yeah, what cichlidfan said... I've just used the default profile. It works fine and I haven't had to tweak any TIR settings.

Im glad for the others here that were up and running but Im not doing so well.

I had to move a lot of stuff to raise a shelf up three inches so that the TrackIR5

could sit on my center monitor and even then, it wont look in and out at gages

and I can only turn my head about 75 degrees and it stops.

I tried to install the a10c profile and its not working nor a generic one I found for

dcs world. I cant look down very much either.

My trackir5 is sitting to the left of center to conpensate for the headphone pro clip

and its lined up ok. I notice when I lean way back in the chair, I get three colored

dots but that is sitting too far back. I am about 26 inches or so from the TIR5

and pro clip sitting normally.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Turning your head only 75 deg? You are talking about your real head, right? That is probably about the maximum you can get. What I did: I raised(?) the curves for the different axes (using the green arrows at the top of the curve definition window) so that the movement of my real head was transformed to a movement of the virtual head about 2 or 3 times (i.e. I move my head 20 deg, the virutal head moves 40 deg).

That way you can use a wider range for your virtual head and also helps to actually see what you are doing (if rl head : virt. head were 1 : 1, how would you look at your monitor if you turn your head, i.e. 90 deg. to the side? :o)

Takes a bit to get used to (move your head sloooowly and not to far!), but eventually it worked out quite well.

I find having no dead zones in any of the axis also improves immersion.

I bought trackIR 5 2 weeks after getting back into sims (DCS). I read the reviews for months and it sounded great... but I did not realize how good it was until I tried it.

I think without doubt Occulus will be the one once its resolution improves. I cannot even imagine flying an Apache A at night with the right eye seeing the PNVS Image sent from the nose of the chopper and the left eye looking at lit cockpit gauges... it would be just the weirdest thing.

In Day one eye with a hud, the other with nothing! Weird! Weird! Weird!

HP G2 Reverb (Needs upgrading), Windows 10 VR settings: IPD is 64.5mm, High image quality, G2 reset to 60Hz refresh rate. set to OpenXR, but Open XR tool kit disabled.

DCS: Pixel Density 1.0, Forced IPD at 55 (perceived world size), DLSS setting is quality at 1.0. VR Driver system: I9-9900KS 5Ghz CPU. XI Hero motherboard and RTX 3090 graphics card, 64 gigs Ram, No OC... Everything needs upgrading in this system!.

Vaicom user and what a superb freebie it is! Virpil Mongoose T50M3 base & Mongoose CM2 Grip (not set for dead stick), Virpil TCS collective with counterbalance kit (woof woof). Virpil Apache Grip (OMG). MFG pedals with damper upgrade. Total controls Apache MPDs set to virtual Reality height. Simshaker Jet Pro vibration seat.. Uses data from DCS not sound... goodbye VRS.

Toe brakes. Get a set of rudder pedals with toe brakes. Best. With out the tail wheel locked, you have no steering except by individual main gear brakes. Ease in a brake to START a turn, release then ease in the opposite brake to stop the turn. Brakes off to (hopefully) go straight. It does NOT drive like a car! DCS P-51 handles like the REAL P-51. (Taxiing is by serpentine turns: left, peek, right, peek, left, peek again...)

Pull the stick back to lock the tail wheel (once you have it straightened.) Then all the rudder kick either way will give you a tiny bit of left/right turn. Push the stick forward unlocks the tail wheel and you are free-wheeling with NO steering except toe brakes.

The problem with TrackIR is that I can't (well, WON'T) fly without it. And, wifey gets sea-sick just walking past the monitor...

The Hornet is best at killing things on the ground. Now, if we could just get a GAU-8 in the nose next to the AN/APG-65, a titanium tub around the pilot, and a couple of J-58 engines in the tail...
