Lets clear this up a bit.

64-bit is always backwards compatible with 32-bit programs if that support is coded in it just runs at a much greater capability on 64-bit. However if ED makes DCS World only 64-bit compatible then a user will have to have a 64-bit OS installed to install and run DCS WORLD. Right now DCS is installed in the 64-bit folder. I think what is meant by this is very misunderstood. As supporting 32-bit OS is limiting what ED can do (Larger maps bigger stuff). DCS world is not a very well optimized 64-bit application but is in fact 64-bit already. What the devs mean I think is that they won't support 32-bit optimizations of DCS world anymore. So if you are on a 32-bit OS DCS won't have some coding to support your crappy system. Nothing really is going to change a lot until we move to a different engine. (EDGE) development is very slow on this project overall but that’s because the dev teams are smaller and it's not a large corporation that is going to commercialize this product. The 64-bit change wont effect us that much but we will have some more options open while we wait for EDGE and other mods to be dev'ed and released. They will keep 32-bit installs more then likely so don't worry about this for now. They will just not use the trickery with 32-bit support. This change might make DCS run like crap on your 32-bit machine but it already runs like crap on a 32-bit system.

Here is a video to give you an idea. 32-bit vs 64-bit and why we need it for DCS WORLD and to move forward.

Might be touching ever-so-slightly off topic here, but I've recently been told about "Windows Blue" (some referring to it as Windows 8.1 'update') as being a significant improvement over Windows 8.

Windows 8, I'm told, was just a stepping-stone into this operating system paradigm shift.

I can't truly comment myself since I've not actually seen anything about this new version/update, but I've already decided I'll be skipping 8 and jumping straight to '8.1'(?) - probably wont be released until next year, is my guess.

The big question (for me) is: will I be able to get in the Huey with my lowly 32-bit system?

I really want to wait until 'Blue' before doing my full system upgrade but there's little chance I could resist the temptation to upgrade until next year knowing there is a Huey sat waiting for me!

The other big question: will the huey come with a built in "Ride of the Valkyries" sound track?! :)

I work in a technical field. There really is nothing wrong with Windows 8 Pro. Windows Blue will just expand on the concept of Windows 8. So really from my day to day experience is the people have old hardware on Windows 8 and they have issues. It has a start menu and you can download options to make it look like Windows 7. Overall Windows 8 needs a new system new hardware not low end specs. It's faster then Windows 7 and I really don't have an issue with it. Windows Blue wont bring in anything thats so great. VISTA and Windows 7 and Windows 8 and Windows Blue wont be the same case. Windows 8 is great I like it and dont have problem with it because I am running middle to high end Windows 8 certified hardware.

I think it will be 64 bit transition time when the new IG is released.

Kroll, Why opening another thread on the same question again?

>>>64 bit only with update .24 (and I bet that this thread will be soon moved /merged into your first thread)

Nothing has changed up to now and this is still the latest news about it:

>> http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=103090:

As we move forward improving the DCS World environment, we are more and more often running into roadblocks that prevent us from doing so due to supporting 32 bit operating systems. This includes larger and more populated worlds with greater terrain mesh details and textures. By moving to 64 bit support only, we will be able solve this and allow larger missions with more units, and it will allow us to improve visual effects.

This change will be coming in the next few months.

Please check the the DCS-News section beforehand in the

future. And I bet you will see it in bold in the changlog of a future update and a Sticky-Thread when it happens.

More info from a ED-Team member:

We are considering dropping the support for 2 things:

1) Windows XP

This will happen pretty soon, mostly because Win8 MSSDK does not support WinXP.

2) 32-bit

This is a tough one. There're valid use cases for it (old laptops, or OEM Win7), but DCS just can't nicely fit into 32-bit address space without complex trickery, that is not worth it.

However, the soon-to-be-out 1.2.4 build still supports both.

Yes we can!

Can we still play with 32bit with this update 1.2.4?

Yes we can!

Use these two fixes for 32-bit:

Works like a charm! :)

Waiting on SSD to install 7x64 for DCS. Not going to bother with the one I already have on HDD because with SSD it will be noticeably faster.

Eventually, with an upgraded engine, it will require 64-bit..
