How do you move around in the cockpit? I enable head movement in the options which just makes flying a bit more realistic to me. But in many videos I see the heads like a person looking around life like movement how do I do that? I have a thing on the top of my stick which just pans around the cockpit but it does not move around side to side forward and backward in a animated way.

This video is what I am talking about...

You will need a piece of hardware like track ir from naturalpoint or freetrack wich uses an ordinary webcam to track your head movement!

What you need is Track IR, arguably the second most important thing to purchase for flight sims after a joystick/HOTAS...

Crad thats what I thought I never have had one. :-( I will have to get one then.

you will be t.h.r.i.l.l.e.d! :D

On the other hand when you can't use it because it's broken or gets irritated by sunlight or something, having to revert to the coolie hat, you feel like an amputee-turtle crawling uphill on its back.

If your electric circuits soldering skills are not that bad you could give Freetrack a shot. Also a good combination is a second hand old version of PS 3 eye camera (one with removable IR filter) and a 3 point clip tracker from natural point. But requires a bit of work in the camera (dismantling it and removing the filter). Do a little research on what is necessary before embarking onto that road.

I would not recommend the pro clip to anyone, I've had two.

Both failed within two weeks and I didn't notice any improvement with tracking, at all. The build quality is so horrendously bad that I am amazed that they even are allowed sell the crap. Seriously, they are a complete waste of money.

The track IR itself on another hand is a must have.

I have read that TrackClip PRO is kinda fragile. Did they just stop working, or suffered from mechanical damage?

I have used TrackClip PRO for about 2 years now. Haven't had any problems. Very accurate tracking all the time. I have never used that basic passive reflector system, so cannot say anything about that compared with active TrackClip PRO.

+1 to Irregular programming (and I'm not just talking about my software development style).

TrackIR is a great addition. A touch overpriced, in my opinion - but that's only because the company knows they can get away with it. (Same with all market leadering companies)

Yes the 'clip' is made from brittle plastic, but even though mine broke (like many/most do?) it's nothing a blob of blue-tac couldn't fix and it still works perfectly fine.

The weak link in the chain seems to be the way the 3-pronged infra-red LED 'fork' is connected to the 'clip' unit.

It is designed in such a way as to allow the angle of the LED 'fork' arm to be adjusted (angled higher or lower). But having found a suitable position For myself, there was no reason to have this adjustable any further.

for this reason I'd probably recommend finding the desired position and then permanently gluing it into place to help strenthen it.

(I keep meaning to replace the blule-tac on mine with some solid glue, but never seem to get around to it).

I've never used the alternative 'reflector' clip (I don't even own a cap, so I have nothing to fit it to) but I'm sure it works fine.

Old Headphone Headband/HAT/Visor, IR LEDS, BIC Pens, Hot Glue, Battery or 5v Fused USB Power Line.

Max $10 (assuming you have the old headphones/hat)

BIC Pens, not the Papermate Blue Stick shape, but the cheapo tube shape. Need about 5 of them, cut them to match specs of the ProClip.

Hot Glue them, Mount LEDs in the Tip of the Tubes, run wiring down Tubes, solder them all together, to a 5v Battery or Fused USB Line.

99% of the stuff can be bought at Radio Shack.

The Track-Clip Pro is rather fragile at the pivot point. However, it took me over a year to accidentally break mine and it was my carelessness that caused it.

Agreed. I've now switched back to the passive hat clip myself and if anything found an improvement in tracking. Great not having another set of wires dangling around.

Just purchased a wireless headset and microphone for total freedom. Should have done it years ago.

I use both. The hat is more comfortable, but the clip does track better... especially at extreme vertical angles as the hat clip is only rounded in the horizontal axis (i.e. relflects equally well when your head is turned left/right). Since I spend quite a bit of time trying to look up/ahead in dogfights, I usually suffer wearing a headset/LED pro clip to give me free range to look down into the cockpit or all the way up without breaking track. If they made the ends of the hat clip hemispheres instead of half cylinders, it would probably track equally well in the vertical. The other advantage of the clip is no hat brim. I generally don't like to have my field of view restricted. Tilting the hat up a bit clears the field of view, but makes the hat clip break track even sooner than it otherwise would when glancing upwards. So, inevitably I eventually go back to the pro clip no matter how tired I am of wearing a headset.

As for the durability: it is easy to break, but I have had mine for years (TrackIR 4 Pro) and it still works perfectly. I just had to glue it on at the extreme pivot point at the base of the prongs... but the main pivot still works and I glued it in the ideal position for placing the prongs as far away from my head as possible to minimize the chance of losing of track when turning my head to the left.

I have a TrackIR 3 with Vector that still works, but upgraded to 4 for the expanded field of view. The 4 has worked so well for so long that I have yet felt the need to buy a 5. So the relatively high purchase price has been more than offset by the endless years of use I have gotten out of it.

I recommend getting both the hat clip and the pro clip to give you maximum flexibility for your situation/personal preferences.

I second that! A joystick is priority one and the TrackIR comes second; even before a proper HOTAS setup in my opinion.

I was chosing between investing in a proper HOTAS or the TIR5 and I went with the TIR and kept my old Logitech Extreme and I don't regret it one bit... It adds one more dimension to the simulator!

I use the standard passive tracker on a baseball cap and it works perfectly; no use for me to invest in the ProClip.

A little bit expensive though, but worth it. Go fetch!

I don't know why people complain about this asbestos stuff...it don't smell so bad.

If you want a taste try FacetrackNOIR with a cheap suitable webcam. The current version of Facetrack now contains updated freetrack (for IR tracking) and, in my opinion, is much more user friendly and smoother then the old freetrack.

My setup cost about $40 to build the IR cap and camera. If enjoy tinkering and have the time you can build something just as good.
