Your own map icon should be visible when you are on the ground. In real life you would know where you are when you're trying to taxi around the airbase. Otherwise it just means getting lost trying to find the runway.

If you are too lazy to get the chart and read the signs simply press F2, zoom out and move your viewpoint to an overhead position... oh, wait! Unless the server hasn't disabled external views, that is.

I just dial in the takeoff runway to HSI and that usually is all I need 90% of the time to navigate myself to the right area. I also pull up chart on IPAD Warthog app which helps for some airports, or of course...print out the charts/bases. Really nice for F10 disabled servers on bigger airbases, especially in-bunker starts.

Oh, and before anyone says that using an IPAD for charts is cheating...think again...

American Airlines is switching over...I imagine other companies and maybe our own military may follow suit of digital 'tablet' maps as well.....

Then again in real life you have ground control frequency which could assist...not yet modeled in DCS...our DCS ATC is pretty primitive as is....maybe in due time...

in some instances online, you cannot view outside your plane and if you happen to be at an airbase you are not familiar with, it can be a bit disorienting.

This is what I do. I usually ask for permission to start up but if I don't know where i'm at, that is a little hard. So I will start up the plane as normal (w/o contacting ATC). Once everything is ready, I check the CDU for divert base. It always shows you the closest airbase and frequency to contact them. Once I know where I'm at, I'll use F10 to view the map of that airbase. So now I know WHERE I'm at, I've set my HSI to runway direction (from ATC), then start taxiing. I may not know exactly where I was parked but after looking around a bit and following the taxi ways, along with HSI, I'll have a very good idea of where I'm at on the airbase and where to go for the runway.

Some servers don't allow for F10 zoom either. If you take your time you can usually figure out where to go.

Agreed, for me it would suffice to just have a colored dot or similar that does not move but just shows you where you start, as you say, you would know this in real life.
