JuicyX Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Hey, I'm new to these forums and flight simulators but I am looking to get into it, what joystick do you recommend that is cheap and will do the job for DCS: A-10C Warthog? 1
JuicyX Posted July 11, 2013 Author Posted July 11, 2013 Under $100 but cheapest one that will do the job is fine
trindade Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 IMO the problem of the cheapest joysticks regarding the Hog is the lack of buttons, so at least you will need an HOTAS to do the job as it should. I think it is possible to grab one in second hand for that price (saitek x52 for example). You won't regret. BTW welcome Juicyx:)
justoc Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Well, I am currently using a Cyborg X. It is pretty fair, and it gets the job done for $60, but up to this point, I wish I had spared no expense and went with all CH( Pro Pedals, Pro Throttle, Fighterstick), as I am about to upgrade anyway, and that would have been $60 more in my pocket. I can't in all good conscience recommend the Cyborg X, though, because I hate it so. for $106.10, you could get an X-52(regular) joystick, though I am sure there are plenty under $100 roaming about. I have heard a lot of good things about it, and it is pretty commonly used around here, and as such, there are plenty of pre-made profiles you can use. Other than that, I can't really say much, because I do not have much experience with a vast variety of joysticks. Also, keep in mind, if you are serious about the sims you might want to look into Track IR 4 or 5. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Madone Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I think the Thrustmaster T.FLIGHT X HOTAS could be pretty good for you, I personally tweaked mine a bit and it works like a charm! You can detach the controls, and with the use of a modifier (to trim), I have all the buttons I need. I bought it 36€ on Amazon so you can probably found it for 50$. As said above, a HOTAS is the way to go with the A10. Strike Posture Set CAS Center of Excellence Intel Core i5 4690k @4,6Ghz, Gigabyte GTX 970 OC, Gigabyte Z97-X, 16GB G Skill Sniper @2400, Samsung 860/850 EVO , Win 10 64 bits, Dual monitors 27"@144"Opentrack + TM Warthog + Saitek pro flight combat
Boris Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 (edited) I too would recommend you look for a Saitek X52 second hand. Ebay is your best bet. The X52 gives you great HOTAS functionality for the lowest possible price. EDIT: Are you in the US? If so, there's a number of X52s on ebay at around the 75$ mark. Purzel Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 The important thing is, to have as many as possible switches/buttons on your new stick. So you can handle the most target aquiring stuff from you stick without letting your eyes from your screen.
PFunk1606688187 Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 You really want a HOTAS, whatever you get. Cheapest HOTAS you're probably gonna find is a typical X-52. Its not a great stick, but its a fantastic throttle. About 3 or 4 years ago when I was upgrading from crap to something halfway decent (ie. X-52), I managed to buy on craigslist 3 X-52s and 1 Saitek Rudder Pedal for about $150 total in a year. 2 X-52s were used, one was new in box. The thing about the X-52 is its not the most robust. I donated the first one I bought to my brother (and its probably the worst of the three, but its alright cause all he flies is HAWX) and retired the throttle from the second one in favour of the brand new one while retaining the stick. Funny thing is, brand new stick is very stictiony. Broken in its rather nice, but sadly broken in also means it can get sloppy. I had to do a mod on the spring to make it stiffer and its much better. Its not perfect, but it gets the job done. Most of the issues are with the stick, while the throttle is mostly excellent. And you're not likely gonna find a proper HOTAS cheaper than the X-52 unless someone is selling their old X-45. Warning: Nothing I say is automatically correct, even if I think it is.

I just had a look, and ergh!! ... Prices in Australia really suck. If you're in Melbourne you could try your luck with this one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SAITEK-X52-Flight-System-/181169322288?pt=AU_Video_Game_Accessories&hash=item2a2e887930&_uhb=1 (It's pick up only) As far as flying without a stick goes... Yeah sure, you can do it, but I wouldn't call it learning to take off. Not that taking off is hard, but using a stick lets you control the aircraft much more precisely. If you use keyboard arrows, you're jerking the axis to the full range of motion on each keypress. So all you would be learning is how to fly with a keyboard, which isn't fun. But if all you want to do is take a bit of a look and muck about, why not. Yeah everything is expensive here, I saw that one you linked earlier but I don't live in Melbourne so maybe I will just need to wait longer so I can afford a good one. I think i will just mess about in-game for awhile with just a keyboard and mouse
tintifaxl Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I think the Thrustmaster T.FLIGHT X HOTAS could be pretty good for you, I personally tweaked mine a bit and it works like a charm! My recommendation, too. Best bang for the buck. secret1962 Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Cheap: T. Flight HOTAS X (I've got this one ;)) Medium: X-52 (Pro?) Expensive: T. HOTAS Warthog. I'd recommend you the T. Flight HOTAS X for under 100 $.
schkorpio Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SAITEK-X52-Flight-System-/181169322288?pt=AU_Video_Game_Accessories&hash=item2a2e887930&_uhb=1 a new stick costs $130 here - so there is no way that is going to sell for $100 wait until the auction is finished and offer them $40 plus postage and see what they say :) Sponsored by: http://www.ozpc.com.au
Gloom Demon Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Sorry for intervening, but does anyone happen to know if it is possible to map the tilting lever on the throttle for the left/right trim function on the T. cheap charlie Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 There is a fellow here with over 10,000 posts that uses the logitech extreme $30 with the buttons on the base as modifiers. I use the same stick with my saitek throttle that has 6 buttons as modifiers, works fine.
drsgfire Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 Yea. Defiantly the trackir is the most important part of experiencing this sim. But I used to use the X45. I really liked it. The HOTAS setup on it is really comfortable. If you catch a good auction you can probably grab a stick and throttle for around $30 or $40. You will want to pick up a rudder pedal set though. I got a set CH pro pedals off Craigslist for $30… yes, very lucky I know.
