Baracuda Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Gentlemen i want to share this with you. If you have relatives or friends sitting in a plane to a specific destination you can follow them all the way and see there excact location altitude etc etc. You can klick on the plane and have a cockpit view to see it land or to follow it somewhere in the air. Or just follow the flight traffic from all over the world. If you like it post it :smilewink: http://www.flightradar24.com/#60,15/6?&_suid=137742569034908063757217143327 1

159th_Falcon Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Nice, but is there some kind of minimum altitude for airplanes to show up? Not getting any helicopters over the north sea, even though its a busy place due to off-shore crew changes. Anyone has an idea as to why they don't show up? Some aircraft don't have the necessary equipment onboard to show up, I've seen the odd heli out of Aberdeen but not many. Headspace Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 (edited) On both this site, and Flightaware.com, you can see both scheduled carrier flights and your own flights (if you are on an IFR flight plan or cross an ARTCC boundary under VFR advisory). Very handy tool if you've rented or co-own an aircraft and you want to see when it's coming back. * There are probably different metrics for non US flights showing up on the site. eurofor Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 It's a good site. I've got their phone app that allows you to point the phone at an aircraft and get the available data on it. On the same subject, see this site http://www.liveatc.net/ which enables you to listen to ATC. I usually have it running while flying in DCS. Even though what they're saying is irrelevant it still adds realistic background chatter for immersion. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Kaiza Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 (edited) For non-US flights it only tracks aircraft with Mode-S out (with extended squitter I believe). Mode S is essentially a data link which can be used between aircraft (for things such as TCAS) as well as from aircraft to ground stations. Only relatively modern automated flight decks have such technology which is why you will not see some flights. In years to come aircraft will all have Mode-S and there is talk of doing away with primary RADAR completely. Some military aircraft are fitted with Mode S, but normally turn it off when tactical because of sites like this. 159th_Falcon Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 Nice sites, still don't get why the helicopters don't show up though. They most certainly have the required hardware onboard. (mode-S transponder) Believe its an mandatory requirement even. Could it be because they are flying outside of controlled airspace? Pyroflash Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 (edited) Nice sites, still don't get why the helicopters don't show up though. They most certainly have the required hardware onboard. (mode-S transponder) Believe its an mandatory requirement even. Could it be because they are flying outside of controlled airspace? Mode-S transponders will never be required equipment. Instead, the ADS-B system will make use of both 1090ES (required for aircraft above 17,999'), and UAT systems which will be required equipment in 2020. For airliners, this requirement gets pulled to 2017 for all aircraft. For now though, pretty much the only transponder requirement for operations in certain airspace is a MODE-C transponder with altitude reporting capability enabled. Also, FYI, controlled airspace is defined as being "Anything other than class G airspace". Just because you aren't required to be talking to someone doesn't mean that you aren't flying in an controlled airspace of some sort. Kaiza Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Nice sites, still don't get why the helicopters don't show up though. They may be out of coverage. I tried to replay a low level nav I did the other day and it lost me once I descended below 500'.
