NEODARK
Well, check this out! http://mousevision.com/download.htm I still haven't test it yet but I think we need to turn mouse view ON. Hey, this sounds pretty interesting, at least as a cheap alternative ($17.99) to trackir. I wonder how smooth the tracking really is. thanks for the headsup. Revvin
It might get you by for now if you already have a camera but in my experience nothing comes close to the real deal TrackIR. If you've not already got a camera then save your money and buy a TrackIR when funds allow.
S77th-RYKE
there is a free utility out there called freelook , need a webcam and LED light , it works quite well , I used it for over a year... It's no track IR , it is much more susceptible to unresponsiveness and lack of precision due to low frame rates . I guess the faster the computer the better it will work . Still a lot more immersive than a hat switch (witch I don't recommend unmapping cause you may need it eventually with freelook) you can get it here http://freelook.org/download.php all previous versions are available for download witch is nice for testing... I found that version 9a worked best for me . if anyone want to try it PM me and I'll send you my profile. TrisM86
Freelook is really cool and easy to handle!!! :icon_supe I downloaded it, played with some settings, and now it works perfectly! See my new Hat (With LED) ;)
Pilotasso
I use an even cheaper solution...I use the x52 mini stick and mouse view enable. No more owl neck twists! Works quite well. Force_Feedback
X-52 is not stiff enough! really, I get the idea this was made for 10yr olds to use with their PS2, the throttle however is great. Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:

Maciver
Hey guys, I plan to try out one of these later. Looks sweet :) I've tried using the mini stick for mouse look, on the x52. It seems kind of hard to control, how do you guys have it set up? I've been looking for an alternative to the hat since i got the stick. I just really miss the mouse for looking around, it's perfect. Prophet_169th
It can work close to trackIR. But you need a high contrast object for it to track. That is what TrackIR does well. The IR reflection has a very high contrast to everything around it. If you had an IR webcam lying around..... lol.
TrisM86
freelook didnt work with a white dot. I really had problems with contrast (room light, background, eyes). but with an LED on the Hat it works perfectly :)
JaBoG32_Prinzartus
If you want to buy my cam2pan account (key) let me know. I used Cam2Pan (mousevision.com) before i got my TrackIR. It works with USB WebCam, but is mor CPU demanding than track-IR and used for best performance with a led-mounted-hat! I will give it away for 5 US Dollars or 5 Euros ;o) Anyone interested? Remember: Freelook is free, so you'd better check if U get acceptable results with freelook first. Oleg_Tr
Freelook (A0012) + NewView 36 -- the best alternative to TrackIR. It works in Il-2 Sturmovik (in all [!!!] versions) and it works in LockOn. EmteZogaf
Almost every webcam is IR-sensitive. I use Freelook too with an IR-diode and an IR-filter made of colour foto negative. See here for description (just the information about IR-filter) http://www.sci-spot.com/Electronic/headmouse.htm
Guest IguanaKing
Has anybody tried using a Trekker head lamp for FreeLook? If not, I'll give that a try this week. Its got seven LEDs and runs on 3 AAA batteries. It is mounted on a nice fixture that allows 90 degrees of vertical adjustment, and has a comfortable head band. There are three modes of operation...1 LED, 3 LED, and 7 LED. It is nice and bright, so it can probably be used in normal ambient lighting. Its 20 bucks and there's no need to rig anything. It wouldn't be a special purchase for me though since I already use one when upside down behind an instrument panel...or crawling around in some Jet-A-soaked hell hole in the rear of a jet or turbo-prop. Roman G
Do these TrackIR alternatives offer 6DOF capability as TrackIR's Vector Expansion or they do just mouse emulation ?
