Just something I was wondering about last night.

This latest patch was 2GB - a previous one was 1GB - with the large amount of modules touted and the proposed new map and any that follow - just how much space are we going to need for DCS World?

Will it end up like FSX, where I can easily fill a 200GB hard drive with my add-ons and still not have them all in?

It isn't actually an issue for me personally (yet) - I still have 22GB spare on my "Combat Flight Sims" hard drive.

But what about people who haven't. Or, they are running it on SSD - which aren't that big at the moment (unless you are Crassus).

I read that the entire Hip module is part of the patch, and that is why it is so big. I don't know if that is true, but surely that isn't a good path to go down? Do we need to have a complete module installed every time one is released - even if we have no intention of buying it - just so we can see an AI or player controlled one on a server?

Maybe it's about Multiplayer? Are they planning something like Rise of Flight multi-crew aircraft, where you can jump on board as a gunner, without owning the actual aircraft yourself? If so, why don't they say that publicly? Or have they?

It's easy to say "hard drives are cheap and SSDs will get bigger/cheaper" or some such - but that would be missing the point. Does the installation really need to be this big? What about the people with rubbish internet. Mine is only 3meg - so a transfer rate of about 330kB/s and I count myself lucky. The bigger the install, the larger the download necessary to reinstall, especially if things go pear-shaped after, say, a bugged patch :music_whistling:

What about sim required specs? Make a list (just for kix)... 3Gig CPU, DX11 GPU, 64bit O/S, 8GB RAM and Hard drive space.... oh, ermm... depends on what you put in it!

Okay, I'm just joking around - but the point is valid - just how big is this installation going to end up being, even if I never buy another module?

Even though you download 2 GB and 1 GB in the previous, the total amount innstalled will not be 3 GB more. Most of the files that you download has had some minor changes, and replaces the old ones without takeing more space.

The modules do not take that much space. I downloaded the Mi-8MTV2, and if i am not wrang, it was onely a 220 MB download?

The current version of DCS world is at 6.25 GB

A-10C is at 1,22 GB

I think it's just easier if everyone has everything and it's all the same.

You'll have to get a bigger hard drive.

Hard luck ;)

Why would that be?

That's a good point.

What do you expect? Getting more modules, new vapor and wing flex effects, updated aircraft models or a new graphics engine without increased hardware requirements? Same with FSX, a standard install doesn't require that much space. But if you want high fidelity aircraft, photo-realistic ground textures and high quality airports, you're gonna have to pay with additional space on the hard drive and an increased load on CPU / GPU. It's your choice to do so and it's not gonna come out of thin air...

And as mentioned above, most of the files in an update replace others, they're not new.

you gotta remember, the data downloaded is new data for the patch and will overwrite the old data... so a 2 GB update is prolly only a Size on Disk increase of 1.5 GB, (Due to new Mi-8MTV2 EDMs, Textures and Sounds being integrated).

my install folders have all been sitting around 12/13 GB for a while

Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2),

Well, I kinda thought it was a bit of a waste of time starting this thread here as mentioned, just for a laugh and a bit of interest in what would come out.

Well done - I was right! :P

However - thanks to those who went along in the spirit that was intended.

No thanks to those who didn't bother to read the whole post in the first place,.

Even less thanks to those who simply repeated what others have said, and as for the rest - well, who cares, really?

I don't think you made your original point that well to be honest.

I remember buying an IBM deskstar 80gg hard disk and thinking i'll never need anymore storage than that, but times move on...

Aircraft by ED and ED Partners are Integrated into DCSW For MP Functionality,

So people that dont have A-10C, can see A-10C Pilots; People that Dont have FC3 can see F-15C Pilots, Etc etc.

So Expect the Install Size to grow with every Official ED/ED Partner Module Release, as new features are added w/ Major Updates, and As Older 3D Models and textures are replaced with new ones.
