So I am using steam for DCS world because I have a massive amount of games on that platform. I have all the current mods for DCS world. I can't use my MI-8 key yet. Which I don't understand why it's so hard to add these to the SQL database that steam uses... So in the future am I better off just using the installed MSI for DCS world? I ask this because add-ons like the MIG-21 I will want to have and I don't want to have to deal with buying addons and not being able to use them in the future until they get around to adding the keys.

Third party modules may never be on Steam. Although it may be possible to install them into a Steam DCS install

 

It is up to each third party team how they sell and distribute their products. Not ED.

Your best bet, from an availability and convenience standpoint, is always going to be outside of Steam.

ED Sends Steam a Valid/Active Key Dump every month.

 

Steams Database is not automatically updated with new keys whenever a License is bought from another distribution method (ED, Game Fly, etc).

 

Once you Buy a License, the Key is a Active, Valid License for Starforce Activation.

 

In order for the user to Activate an External License on Steam, Steam needs to merge it with their Database, It's not just for activation, they have to merge the database, so the Steam Server Recognizes your code, and knows what DLC to Link it to and download.

 

 

 

Modules from ED Partners will be integrated into DCSW and Updates will be sent out through DCSW Updates to both DCSW Standalone and Steam.

 

Modules from 3rd Party Developers will use their own DRM, and Update Distribution System.

 

I've had no issues with Installing DRM Free 3rd party Modules, and I havent tested DRM Solutions with 3rd Party Modules on DCSW Steam.

Based on the fact that 3rd party addons might never be on steam I will just use the MSI. Not worth having to wait for things to be added each month. Thanks

Again, the License Key Dump is only sent to Steam every 30 days,

 

*Assuming* they send them on the 1st, the Key should be able to Activate Mid-week next week.

That's exactly why I stopped using Steam a while back. I've also noticed that DCS runs far better/smoother since going that route.

I have also (tonight actualy) started to get away from the STEAM installation. I purchased Combined Arms and STEAM does not recognize my game key yet. So once everything is honky dory with this version (still downloading my planes) I will uninstall the STEAM version and go this route.

I will say that the bandwidth /download speed isn't too peachy with the non-STEAM version though.

It uses quite a bit of resources and can even be some of the problems with crashes. I used to have crash issues with it back in my COD days.

I bought A-10C through Steam a while back, but pretty quickly realised that with DCS you're better off running DCS World + Modules as a completely separate install......

lol. Steam runs using less resources than the browser window you have open right now. If it's a hog then you probably need a new PC.

As long as DCS has no lobby, no pregame-chat, no buddy-system, no voice-chat, no multiplayer-logbook, no recommendation-system, no one-click-manual, no one-click-community-guide, ... I guess there's more reasons to use STEAM than not.
