My 2 cents, wait for a VR headset next year, like the Oculus Rift for exemple. It should provide immersion that no amount of traditional screens can :)

FYI, most of those prices are not that good.

I can match fairly close or beat those prices, for the U2412 and S2440 as examples, on Amazon for new units with free (Prime) shipping and full warranty.

Anyone have input on the monitors?

Anyone have input on the monitors?

I have owned several Dell monitors (currently a U2711 and a smaller 1080p whose model I don't recall) and have always been quite happy with them.

I AGREE WITH THIS GUY.

i say go with triple monitor if you are accustomed to using TrackIR...

as for me, I CAN NOT USE trackIR, i absolutely hate it.

i tried multimoitor, and the experience Sux for me.

u need a hefty computer to run the 5040x1080 resolution.

and because i dont use track IR, using the HAT to look around really sux.

if i was able to surround myself with monitors around me to form a cockpit, it would be worth it, but unfortunately, i only have 2 nvidia GTX580 which surround sux (Radeons are better with multimonitor) so, to have monitors around is beyond my means.

I've tried a multimonitor config and was very unhappy with it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. There are constant configuration headaches, and the sacrafice in performance just isn't worth it. Surround screens also tend to induce nausia if you're prone to motion-sickness.

My suggestion would be to save your money and put it towards one of the new IPS UltraWide screens, like the AOC q2963Pm, 29" IPS Panel. I picked up one of these and for me it is perfect. It gives you a wider field of view, without the dramatic performance trade-offs, or configuration woes, so you'll spend more time playing and less time trying to get your games to run in surround mode. Most of todays games support the 21:9 (2560 X 1080) ratio natively.

Another more expensive option is to go with a 2560 X 1440 display, like the Dell U2713HM.

I tried a single 40" LED TV as my primary. While the immersion was nice, the ergnomic issues it presented, I could not overcome.

I then tried 3 1080P screens, but between the motion sickness, annoying configuration headaches and the horrible framerates, even on an ATI 7970 - I just couldn't stand the FPS dropping to 10 - 15 during large battles.

I finally settled on the AoC q2963Pm and could not be happier.

Hope you find a solution you are just as happy with.

I'm currently on the fence with going triple screen. While I think it would be very nice (I have trackIR equivalent and think it would be great on 3 screens) I'd have to factor in 3 new screens, something to mount them all and a pretty hefty GPU to run them all at a decent framerate. That would probably come to around £1200, assuming £200 per screen, £500 for a top-end GPU and £100 for a decent mount setup).

I'm tempted now instead just to get a nice big 27/29" IPS panel and just run 1 screen well like the last poster describes. Probable cost would be 1/2 the above and if the screen fills my FOV it'll probably be immersive enough.....

I am leaning away from triple screens myself, even though my next video card should handle it. From everything I am reading, the frame rates for a 3 camera view is unacceptable and I am fairly certain I won't like the stretching I have seen in a single camera view.

When I consider other flight sims as well, which is all this machine is used for, it just seems like a waste of time and money.

Tom's Hardware has an excellent review on the AoC, and to be honest that review sold me on it, along with the price-point. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/aoc-q2963pm-ultra-wide-review,3591.html

It scored as high as many of the more expensive displays and I can see why. I believe it uses the same IPS panel as the LG equivelent.

Check Anandtech for other reviews of similar displays. They have a review of the Asus MX299Q, which looks almost identical to the AoC in appearance, as well.

I've not had the opportunity to see the Dell or Asus models you've pointed to but from what I can tell most of the 29" Ultra-Wide screens, use the same or similar IPS panels.

Edit: if I get time tonight, I'll post some shots but there are several youtube videos comparing 2560 X 1080 to 1080P in games - just do a search on youtube for 21:9, for example:

My ATI HD7970 (3gb RAM) doesn't break a sweat and pushes well over 60 FPS with all settings maxed out in every single game I've thrown at it.

I'd imagine a last gen Nvidia 670 or the new 770 would have no issues, either. I wouldn't suggest going with anything that has less than 2 GB of vRAM, however.

LOL

What sort of GPU would you need to run a single 2560 X 1080 screen at a good framerate with high details?

Nothing too special. My GTX580 does a fine job at 2560x1440.

http://www.wsgf.org is a great resource. Get Flawless Widescreen off of the site and it makes most modern games work with an ultra-wide setup

I highly reconmend if you can get 16:10 screens. The extra height really makes a difference.

I use three of the old Dell FP2001 monitors. With bezel compensation, the desktop resolution is 5100x1200.

It works really well.

Thank you Mack. I'll make a separate post on how I built it in a week or so.

I'm trying to mount an old Cougar throttle to function as a collective. The linkage is kicking my butt.
