I am still within the early stages of the never-ending process of learning about computer parts. I currently have an AMD heavy setup that I am not as happy with as I would like to be. Currently I have a store bought HP h8-1414 envy in which I replaced the PSU with a 600W Thermaltake and the graphics card with an XFX HD7950 Core Edition. It is running with a six-core FX-6120 at 3.5Mhz. DCS runs decent, except for when I look into areas with a high object count; sometimes it will drop to 5 frames depending on the scenario. I also play FSX as well as X-plane. Fsx does decent as well, other than when I am using TacPack as I assume the MFCD screens in the cockpit slow it down a lot. Without rambling anymore about my plight, I was looking at different building websites yesterday, such as CyberPower, and I believe I have put together some decent rigs. I just need feedback as to what is considered overkill now but might be a "future-proof" setup down the line.

I am working within a budget of $2k to $2500 and the following are some of the parts I have been looking at:

*Corsair Obsidian Series 750D Full Tower Gaming Case w/ USB 3.0 & Full Side-Panel Window

*Intel® Core™ i7-4770K 3.50 GHz 8MB Intel Smart Cache LGA1150

*Asetek 570LX 240mm Liquid Cooling Extreme Performance CPU Cooler

*2TB (2TBx1) SATA-III 6.0Gb/s 64MB Cache 7200RPM HDD (Single Drive)

*HDD2:128GB ADATA SP900 SATA-III 6.0Gb/s - 550 MB/s Read & 520 MB/s Write

*16GB (8GBx2) DDR3/1600MHz Dual Channel Memory [+89] (Corsair Vengeance

*ASRock Z87 Extreme4 ATX w/ Xfast Technology, Purity Sound Audio, Display Port, Intel GbLAN, 3 Gen3 PCIe x16, 2 PCIe x1, 2 PCI

*Microsoft® Windows 8.1 (64-bit Edition)

*850 Watts - Corsair Enthusiast Series TX850 V2 850W 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

*NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB GDDR5 PCIe 3.0 x16 Video Card (EVGA Superclocked Edition

The price for the aforementioned build is around $2400 to have Cyberpower build it. My questions are:

1. I have read about the i5-4670K being more than enough for gaming; could the hyper-threading of the i7 possibly be used for gaming in the future?

2. I also noticed the i7-4820K supports faster ram; is the performance gain from 1600 Ram to 1866 significant?

3. Is it easy to OC the k processor? or should I have them overclock it?

4. Is Intel planning on introducing a new generation at some point this year? As in, should I wait to do anything?

I highly appreciate all feedback. I currently have been using Windows 8 for a year now, and I am used to it, that is why I chose it over a 7 version. Thanks for your time:helpsmilie:

This year the CPU market will be in sort of freeze. AMD will not release anything new until 2015 and Intel is doing some Haswell refreshments because original is prone to overheat while overcloking. Nothing too serious anyway, is more related to extremes.

I am not aware about the MB model you choose, but if you are going to try some overcloking then Asrock is not the best option. Your budget is allowing you to go for an ASUS and I find my model (check my signature) to be extremely friendly and more than that is rock solid.

850W should be enough just be sure you are choosing an PSU with stable output values.

Regarding memories just go a bit higher, over 1866 MHz, better 2100+

Good luck!

...except for when I look into areas with a high object count; sometimes it will drop to 5 frames depending on the scenario.

You will not see those low figures again for quite a while.

3. Is it easy to OC the k processor? or should I have them overclock it?

I have roughly the same setup as you. I have mine running @ 4.6Ghz without much hassle. I probably could go a bit higher but i don't see any reason why. The extra 0.1 Ghz (or 0.2 if i'm lucky) will not make a big difference. Also, not every CPU will overclock the same.

Tip: I used Coollaboratoy's Liquid Pro to replace the regular thermal paste.

Win11 Pro 64-bit, Ryzen 5800X3D, Corsair H115i, Gigabyte X570S UD, EVGA 3080Ti XC3 Ultra 12GB, 64 GB DDR4 G.Skill 3600. Monitors: LG 27GL850-B27 2560x1440 + Samsung SyncMaster 2443 1920x1200, HOTAS: Warthog with Virpil WarBRD base, MFG Crosswind pedals, TrackIR4, Rift-S, Elgato Streamdeck XL.

Personal Wish List: A6 Intruder, Vietnam theater, decent ATC module, better VR performance!

I am looking quite forward to not slamming my Huey into the ground while in the midst of a gun run because the frames dive so low. I appreciate the responses guys.

that'll be one nice rig! I'm looking to build a new gamer system as well, and will probably use the i5-4670K.

MSI MAG Z790 Carbon, i9-13900k, NH-D15 cooler, 64 GB CL40 6000mhz RAM, MSI RTX4090, Yamaha 5.1 A/V Receiver, 4x 2TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMe, 1x 2TB Samsung 870 EVO SSD, Win 11 Pro, TM Warthog, Virpil WarBRD, MFG Crosswinds, 43" Samsung 4K TV, 21.5 Acer VT touchscreen, TrackIR, Varjo Aero, Wheel Stand Pro Super Warthog, Phanteks Enthoo Pro2 Full Tower Case, Seasonic GX-1200 ATX3 PSU, PointCTRL, Buttkicker 2, K-51 Helicopter Collective Control

ad.1. You've read right. i7 is an overkill, probably even for a simulator.

Possibly, but then you'd be better of buying what is used in games now. If a game uses technology X you can buy a CPU with the technology X then.

ad.2.

I don't think so, even for 1600 vs 2400 it shouldn't be any significant when put against the increased cost.

i7 is not overkill. If for DCS it is not fully used indeed, there are other game/sim engines which is using it much more better. For example the plane next to you is processed by a different CPU core.

I think EDGE will use it much more better too, so from my point of view becasue we are speaking here about a sim rig, I think i7 is worthing.

Whats missing from the rig is the SSD drive.

After the GPU its the second best thing that you need.

the large HDs cluter up quite fast...

This is what i done

Samsung 64gb ssd for OP.

Samsung 256gb for games

1tb external for the rest.

the ssd will make that fps dropp history.

Of course. I can't argue with the power of hope :)

Please link to a source stating that dcs takes advantage of 3+ cores and extra i7 features if you've seen such claims.

I was just saying that an i7 is a future proof investment as long as an gaming rig is required and there are other sims in market able to use it at its full capacity. I was reffering to X-plane, but no need to expand this subject here.

I did not state anything about DCS...just my hope for its future engine.

There is no such a thing as "future proof" in computer industry. Basically, it's obsolete right after announcement and promotion.

i7 is overkill for pure gaming/home rig. There are hundreds of comparative reviews which back this statement up.

However, if the rig will see some video/3d/photo content editing/management use, i7 is much better and faster solution.

You would be better getting a case with a gpu vent instead of a window if getting a top end graphics card.

Also unless you are going to stick 2 graphics cards into the system for sli/xfire then you wouldn't need a huge case and motherboard with 7 expansion slots.

If only going for 1 card, save some cash and get a smaller sized mATX case and motherboard.

I was thinking that I will probably end up SLI sometime in the future, just not right away. I have noticed a lot of companies utilizing X79 boards as well. What is the difference between X79 and Z87? In regards to the processor, I believe I am going to go with the i5 4670k

I am not going to be using it for anything other than gaming, Microsoft office for school, and surfing the net.

Outstanding. Thinking about going with OriginPC; they are a bit more expensive, but based on reviews of customer service and quality building, they seem to be the most viable option. Does anyone have an opinion on boutique builders?

Nice rig! You'll be pleased with that beast of a graphics card and can enjoy the Huey with about 50+ fps in heavy fighting and smoke! (easily 80 fps otherwise)

Congrats in advance

You mentioned CyberPower in your first post. I ordered my rig (see signature) only two months ago from CyberPower UK. I'm not sure if it's actually the same company as in the US, but if they are, I can absolutely recommend them. Fast delivery and very professionally assembled (I'm very picky about proper internal cabling :music_whistling:)

My humble rig: Windows 10 pro 64bit; i7-6700k on Gigabyte Z170X G7; 32GB; MSI 980ti Twin Frozr; 512GB Samsung 950 Pro (NVMe/PCIe x4); 1TB Samsung 850 Pro; Komplete Audio 6; TrackIR 5 Pro;

DCS 2.5 with almost all modules; favourites: Shark, Mi-8, Harrier, Viggen, Mirage, Hornet

Thanks for the response. I may have to go with them just based on shipping time. I cannot wait until feb 18th for origin to ship. Hopefully the Cyberpower in the states performs as well as the UK company.

I don't have a separate sound card either, i use onboard sound.

I used to have Creative stuff but these where always a pain in the ass from the start of the Live series. "ALWAYS" had crackling sound with them. Looked hours to cure this but it never happened.

And for what i use it, i don't hear the difference anyway, my hearing has past that point long ago.
