Maybe if you are landing on a giant piece of ice

God knows what would happen IRL, most likely a terrible accident.

Is this thread for real? Landing without wheels???

:flyover:

:helpsmilie:

Yes, I should try that on winter map. I don't know if any lake is iced to try it :joystick:

Hmm... Don't think I've overshot a landing in the A-10 for quite a while. If you put her down at 120 knots you can usually stop half way down most strips.

Downside of this is that it increases the stopping distance theoretically.

Anti-skid should definitely be on at all times. There is no reason to ever turn it off.

ABS should decrease stopping distance. Certainly if you're locking the tires without them. Tires generate max friction when rolling because static friction is greater than dynamic friction.

Lemme see if I can catch up. ABS and Anti-Skid increase stopping distance, except they don't, they should decrease it.

I'm also convinced that in 1.2.7 stopping distance is less when Anti-Skid is off, but it should definitely be on at all times. WTF? :music_whistling:

Well, let's try to sort this out. :smartass:

First, Anti Skid = ABS? I believe so, but we should make sure that this basic assumption is correct or we'll all talk about different things. For the time being, I'll define that (A-10C) Anti Skid is pretty much the same as (vehicle) ABS.

I agree with Exorcent that ABS should decrease stopping distance under most conditions. Wikipedia also agrees. Thus, Anti Skid should reduce stopping distance as well. In theory (aka in Real Life ), Anti Skid should be on at all times.

I'm still convinced that this is not the case in the current version of DCS and it seems this has not been the case in a very long time.

Therefore, in dry condition landings where stopping distance is in any way important (short runway (e.g. Kutaisi landing strip), flame-out landing, clearing runway ASAP at first taxiway exit and so on), DCS pilots should indeed switch Anti Skid off because this will yield better results.

Do we agree on this, or did I get something wrong?

As I pointed out earlier- I think even "dry" conditions in the sim are programmed as "wet." Unless someone can confirm that got fixed?

I don't think I can confirm anything at this point.

But seriously. I never heard that this problem was fixed, so it probably wasn't. But in any case, stopping distance should be shorter with Anti Skid on, so I'd say it looks like there are two independent problems (1: Always wet runway, 2: Anti Skid performs badly).

I was under the impression that ABS (and assumably Anti Skid) don't decrease stopping distance of a skilled operator, but increase controllability in wet/icy conditions. I can stop as quickly in one vehicle with ABS as in another without it- the difference is controllability while stopping

how has no one mentioned the a-10's "reverse thrust"?

You mean toggle ground safe off and "brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"?

That works too :pilotfly:
