 2. Hey all, I've been a simmer for 6 years, off and on. I've only owned a few joysticks: Saitek x45, and, years ago, a Saitek Cyborg something. Never used force feedback before. Never owned rudder pedals. I've always wanted a new joystick. I've also always wanted rudder pedals. Force feedback (FF) was just a bonus. So I sprung for the G940. Here are my thoughts. The G940 is a solid piece of work. It is high density, tough, THICK plastic. The FF has a -lot- of power behind it. It can make my flimsy Ikea desk shake alarmingly. When you test buttons in the calibration screen, it also sets off FF. My desk nearly was shaken apart during calibration. However, the joystick needs a little guide. There are a couple of physical dials I'm uncertain as to their exact purpose. They actually don't seem to DO anything resistance wise. One on the underside of the throttle, and one in between the pedals. I suspect they are supposed to change resistance but again, they don't seem to do anything. The stick is very very sensitive and easy to aim. I've had much better aiming with my rockets than with my x45. I'm impressed. Need to get used to rudder pedals though. They are already improving my flying, until I forget my feet are commanding my heli and I start spinning when I stretch my leg! The trim knobs have paint showing neutral position. I'll probably file a notch into the center point of each marker. Notches are all I want. I like the knobs where they are. In IL-2, that means I can KEEP a hand on the stick while reaching over with the throttle hand to tweak the trim. The knobs are of course pointless as trim in Black Shark. :) Need to think of a use for them. The throttle-joining device is just a fiddly button; the two throttles may sometimes register slightly different numbers because they can be at very slightly different positions even when joined together. I'm not sure what to do with the second throttle. It does nothing now. It's a bit awkward to have them separated, but I could make it work if there was a good use for it. Ideas? I like the FF trimming. On the advice of a pilot/server admin, -Merc- Cat, I'm trying out the 'normal' trimmer (no "central position trimmer mode"). I was used to the other trimmer with my x45. It feels about as accurate as my x45, that is, it pulls away a bit from the trim position, but autopilot compensates. I will keep trying the trimmer mode, I know people are curious about this. Any specific questions I can try to answer/experiment around. It's a lot easier to fly with a FF joystick. It turns the Black Shark into a different helicopter. I can feel the bite of any maneuvering. I'm not fighting the autopilot nearly as much, and I'd already gotten decent at working with the autopilot before this. Also, having the joystick reflect the trim position makes life much easier. I have a better feel for the chopper as a result of the FF. The only problem I'm having now is rudder trim. I forget that the trim hits the rudder too. I have to take my feet OFF the pedals, then trim, then back on with the pedals. Otherwise I get annoyed at the chopper spinning until I reset trim. We need FF on pedals now! :) Resetting trim is very easy. I just hold the joystick in the position it's ALREADY in, brace myself for the kick of the FF repositioning, then reset trim. The mini-joystick is very precise. It's smooth and does not feel like a normal HAT switch at all! I'd use it for the Shkval if it wasn't so HORRIBLY in need of calibration. Apparently the software update will let us calibrate it. The other mini on the throttle is really just a HAT switch, nothing like the first mini on the joystick. Someone mentioned the FF felt like it was 'grinding'. You can feel the gears of the motors mostly when the stick's out of game. I haven't noticed it more than once or twice in game. Also, someone mentioned their joystick was making 'arcing' sounds near center. Mine does that, rarely and very quietly. 'Arcing' is the wrong word, I think. I just move it around to stop it. Finally, I've read about the joystick base heating up a lot. Mine gets warm but not hot. (edit) Currently the software's doing well. No problems installing it. Logitech Mark is active on various forums and collects feedback for the releases, which is nice. Right now there's a bug which affects my platform (Vista x64) and causes crashes. Given our recent experience with rapid updates, this should be fixed shortly. (/edit) Having so many rotaries highlights fairly inconsequential limits in the game engine. You can't bind your HUD brightness or Helmet-Mounted-Display brightness directly to a rotary switch. Oh well. The buttons on the base of the throttle are very very handy, although the colors don't change and won't for a while. They make me want one of those 25-key programmable MFD things, because the 8 buttons are so darn useful! I map them to the left targeting panel, and with in-game shift, right autopilot panel. Roughly the same spatial layout as the real panels, it's wonderful. Pros: Very precise joystick Sturdy (so far) Force feedback greatly improves feel of flying Great Mini-Joystick on the main stick I am flying much better with this system so far Cons: Can feel FF gears if you concentrate (not an problem to me, far outweighed) Software is somewhat inadequate and could be developed more No notches in trim tabs or rotaries Mini-Joystick calibration is whacked and can't be fixed yet, and second Mini isn't a Mini at all Joystick makes little tiny ticking or arcing noises occasionally near center Geez. What a long post. Hi, by the way!

 3. You guys are all to kind to this kid with his Ross Perot complex. He bitches about how messed up things are and when it comes time to do something he just disappears.:music_whistling: But before he goes he has to tell us how screwed up we all are. Well John X your are the man. I can't believe how blind we all are not to bow down to your superior intellect. You truly have a superior understanding of all that pertains to Eagle dynamics. Oh and bye don't let the door hit you in the ass when you leave:thumbup:

 4. John X, All you ever seem to do is moan and disrespect other people's mods, try making something from scratch that need's integrating into a program already built, believe me it's not as " easy " as YOU seem to think. I come to this website to learn from other people not to complain at every mod that's listed on this site . I don't know if ED's Team is full time or not, but what I do know is they produce a wonderful game, be it FC or DCS, we all want or would like add-on's every month but as a modder ( not Aircraft for FC, see previous discussion with John x ) I know that's not feasable. I'll bet there is at least 2000+ man hours already in the basic DCS. As for your ' mod ', when and if it ever comes out then I'm sure people will play it, but be prepared for the same criticism you have given other people on this forum. One last comment: It's time now to put up or shut up, by that I mean let's see your Mod or stop complaining about everyone else. As already stated earlier in this post I come here to learn and enjoy reading other post's but when I see all your negative post's on the forum it spoils my time here. I would respectfully suggest when you have learnt a little more about the subject then you may comment. As regarding " empty promises " when is your mod coming out ???

 7. I just got back into DCS Blackshark and have set everything to realistic, because I figure might as well play the game for real. Couple of points I have noticed, the trim sucks, I manually set the chopper's speed, heading, altitude etc and then hit the "T" key keep it held until happy and let it go and the chopper does a complete nose dive and goes from 500ft to crashing into the ground, what the heck??? Secondly, I slow down to get ready for landing or just some slow low flying and the chopper starts drifting sides even when I adjust with rudder, most of the time it is drifting to my left. I am sure my joystick is calibrated, so why is this happening? This morning it drifted me into the side of a building??? Which brings me to my third point, if the pilot (me) cannot even get the chopper to hold level flight, and or hover and or basically after trim fly and hold alt without spinning, drifting, losing altitude, etc etc, how am I supossed to be able to go "hands free" and view over displays and push buttons for other stuff??? I guess it means I should go back to "Game settings" but I reckon that spoils this otherwise fine sim.:pilotfly: Finally just when you probably thought it couldn't get much worse, I finally land the chopper (rough at that) and once I realse the stick the chopper, starts "rolling along" trying to turn left and generally do it's own thing, so unless I keep control of the chopper (as in hands on joystick 24/7) the chopper bouncess around like a kid on a trampoline and such. :joystick: I have been in a few choppers (as a passenger in my Army days) and although I was in the back they didn't do all the stuff that happens in this game, maybe the old Huey was a more stabile machine? anyway the flight dynamics of this sim must be all stuffed, or I just suck at the game, (maybe a little of both). So I have vented, but I would love to hear what others would like to contribute to my points, lastly, shouldn't one be able to lift off and climb say to 50-100ft and just hover there "hands free" (without the use of the hover button) and not have the chopper go nuts?:joystick: Cheers all, venting over.

 8. I am really surprised to see, as once again we ended absorbed by what he says or does mean Mr. John_X, I think we are giving much importance to his opinion, and consequently, the main theme of the thread is lost. And he is not the first time ... Please return to the topic! it's time!!

 15. I don't know if you play any console games, but if you do, just look at the staff credits in the end. You will lose count of the number of people it takes to creater a CONSOLE game. If i had to guess, it would be near the thousands mark. Now let's consider there are only 12 or so on the ED team. Does that put it in perspective? I know nothing about game development (I'm only begining computer science) but I do know there's a sh*t load of work involved. Such disrespect is not going to get you anywhere. Keep up the great work ED! Really looking forward to a fixed wing!

 16. Trim the the real aircraft (and with a FFB stick) performs two functions: First, it holds the position of the stick in the trimmed position, and second, it updates the autopilot with a new desired heading and attitude which the autopilot will attempt to hold. If you don't have FFB, the game will still "memorize" the position of the cyclic (and pedals) when the trim button is release, but since your joystick won't stay there on its own, the game is set up to require you to return the stick (and pedals) to center after you release the trimmer. So the first purpose of the trim is to set a new center position of the cyclic and pedals. If you have force feedback, it actually sets the center and holds the stick there, if not, then it sets a "virtual" center, and you must return the stick and pedals to center and then any new movements will be relative to the trimmed "virtual" center position. This works the same with FD on or off. The second purpose, setting a new attitude and heading for the autopilot, is effectively disabled with the FD on. You may get the cue as to what your trimmed position is, but the autopilot won't try to hold it there. Trimming is not necessary with the FD on unless you want a limited hands-off capability, because the springs in your joystick are very easy to overcome and won't cause much fatigue during flight, while in the actual aircraft, you'd get really tired really fast holding the stick and pedals against the spring force of the force trim. So in the real thing, even with FD on, the aircraft is typically trimmed every time the controls are moved, just to reset the center positions and remove that spring tension.

 17. I don't know about you folks, but for me, I'd much rather wait longer than get it sooner with tons of problems. I'd rather there was no rush to sell date. Software that is well thought out and thoroughly tested is much more valuable IMO. Otherwise you sit waiting for 2 more months for patches to get something to work the way is should have when shipped. Besides all this, as much as I am excited about the prospects of blowing stuff up with an A-10 (my all time favourite CAS craft), I still haven't learned much in Black Shark yet and have plenty of hours, weeks and months of fun ahead of me in that alone. A-10 will be ready when it's ready and hopefully not released a minute sooner.

 19. Hi Leroy, practice, practice, practice... or "learn, learn, learn", as Mr Lenin said:). I fly helos IRL, so controlling this beast was not as hard as I can remember my very first real flights:D. To learn how to control a helicopter, it requires full attention, no weapon system, navigation etc. in the first couple of hours, let's say 15-20 or more (don't wanna frighten you). Take-off, land, hover, traffic circuits, basic maneuvers like acceleration, brake, controlled turns, climb, descend, then advanced maneuvers and aerobatics, hour after hour until it becomes a fun, before you start to bother nav and weapons. And yeh, BS's trimmer and autopilot are tricky ones, they must be in the top five in numbers of threads on ED forum:D. Trimming is unnatural, it's made for people mostly have non-FFB sticks. You can try various methods: push and hold trim, maneuver, release the trim, center the controls is one method. I prefer continuous trimming in pitch angle (speed) and make turns without trimming, but I use Flight Director. Well... it might not be an aid but you should read BS threads here about trim and AP usage, try the methods and choose the best for you. Another IRL story: rookies often ask for advice about trimming, instructors often tell the basic two methods and say "... but you must coose your preferred one". Practice, mate, and it will be real fun as you can, for example, land on a roof within 30 secs, from a 250 kph level flight, no matter which roof you've chosen around you. Cheers!

 20. Thanks to those stored targets you can press "ВЫХОД" button: DLINK automatic ingress to target. This button activates functionality to automatically point the aircraft in the direction of the assigned data linked target [LSHIFT + Y]. When you activate this button and activate one of the targets when you uncage the shkval its marker frame will go automatically on or near that activated target. To send wingman to attack on datalink targets you have to make an ingress point first.

 21. Hi Triangle. I can't give you a definitive, but what I have done is use the target indicators on the ABRIS to line up my Shkval. What I mean is the Current viewpoint of the Shkval is indicated by a yellow line on the ABRIS. I move to have the end of the indicator over the target Icon, provided by recce. From there, I just set up an attack position at range. Is this similar to what you have been doing? It would be logical to have target markers in HUD as well...

 23. When i first was learning to fly, i found it really helpful to keep the Heading Hold off ( L-Shift H) and just keep the Pitch & Bank AP's on.. This allows you to fly the bird without heading hold pulling you in the wrong direction. e.g- When in forward flight and you think you are trimmed good.. turn off Heading Hold and you will most probably see the heli suddenly yaw one way or another, this is because your heading hold was pulling or had some authority in holding your "trimmed position"). I only use heading hold really when in a hover, if you are trimmed well in forward flight you don't really even need it and the benefit is that you can dodge and turn and evade without ever pressing the trim button..

 30. I'm too dizzy to think clear Hi Sam, I just committed to an upgrade path. I've purchased an i7-920 from Micro Center for the paltry sum of $200.00 USD. That price is nearly $80.00 les than elsewhere on the web, and that's money I can divert to a better GPU ( I like the GTX285 with it''s 512mb bus, but the '275 is a good buy too, imo). I'm waiting for a confirm, since it's a local-must-pick-it-up-at-the-store purchase. The website listed the remaining quantity at 4 units last night when I ordered. It'll be just my luck that by the time I should receive my confirm email I'll get one saying they are all sold out! But I'm glad you're getting some good info about the i5. Right now it looks as if the i5 series has tested very strong against the i7 when it comes to PC games. But I'm seeing the i7 as the longer, stronger performance upgrade path. I may be seeing that wrong. I wish Wags would weigh in here since he's so close to the future DCS gaming engine. Perhaps he could provide some divine insight as to which processor upgrade might serve DCS best/longest. I know it's hard to say, but there are people out there developing gaming engines right now (check this link out: http://www.devmaster.net/forums/index.php ), and they may be looking at the potential of the two processors. Here's another link that might be helpful for peering into the CPU future: http://www.cpu-world.com/index.html Still, a question remains. Will gaming engines take advantage of the other performance features the i7 has over the i5? Or is it really just a matter of GHZ that will rule our complex flight sim gaming performance over the next few years? My gamble is that the i7 road path will be the longer-winded path over the i5. Now to just prove that opinion. We'll see. Wags? Where are ya buddy? Flyby out
