2. Hey there. I've received numerous requests to make additional videos about DCS A-10 since the multiple JDAM drop video. I enjoy making these. Feel free to suggest what topic you would like covered next. Gonna consolidate these into a master list of vids. As of now, there are 4 "main" ones, with the Targeting Pod guide being the latest: The above video describes how to range targets and create more accurate markpoints with the targeting pod. I made this fairly (as study sims go) newbie-friendly vid to show how to land. Part 1 is a basic VFR approach from the pattern; Part 2 has a crosswind landing and missed approach + additional info on crab angle calculation. I have introduced my personal preferences into the procedures very slightly, so I'm sure it'll deviate from the official Landing training mission. But, this is how I usually do it. I am not going to get particularly hardcore in the landing series of vids, because they're meant to be a starting point to practice and not an encyclopedic repository of pitch-perfect landings. Lately I've been experimenting with the trim system and MRFCS, and so I made a video about that. There was some confusion in the openbeta forum about how these systems work. It's also motivated by my desire not to end up in the state of confusion that I (and many others) were in about Black Shark's trimmer. I went into the A-10A manual that's linked in the "A-10 documentation" thread, read up on the trim/MRFCS topics in that, and then compared it to the functionality in the beta. The result was that it works as described in that document. Which is very cool. Please note that since the MFRCS is still a WIP item, I'm not going to do part 2 until there's either a good way to portray it as WIP, or until it's finished. The original JDAM video; shows the user how to launch multiple JDAMS and explains how the markpoint system can be used to input new navigation waypoints for flight plans. _______________________ I'll annotate any technical errors people find.

  3. I thought I would post my first cut Operator Notes onto the board for comment, and in case anyone found them useful. I've found the manuals start up checklist doesn't correspond to the video which gets confusing, and also that I was getting lost around the cockpit a lot so I've tried to address this by pulling the panel images from the manual into a couple pages and also adding reference images to the checklist. I've also added my Brevity notes from the F-15 and the FC2 list of Airfields to the back. I'm planning to add more to this as I continue to learn to add other reference info such as approach charts and frequencies. I'm also thinking I'll add joystick diags so that you can draw in your own set up for reference if its useful to a wider audience than me. Hope this is of help to someone :)

  5. Fixed the bandwidth issue, and got the full results today...and here is one more pic I got today from the PAO....a nice aerial of a ramp full of Hawgs!! I will try to add more pics in a day or two. Also, got the full results today.....the 190th FS from Gowen Field was 1st place, the 354th FS from Davis Monthan was second, and the 184th FS from Fort Smith was third. Since the 190th cannot host the event two years in a row, Hawgsmoke 2012 should be at Davis-Monthan AFB in AZ.

  6. This is getting kind of specific but since I spent 2 hrs last night getting it just right I figured I'd share the results of the effort. I have all CH Products flight controls: CH fighter stick, CH Pro Throttle, and CH Pro Petals. I've had them for over 6 years now and they have survived multiple moves and getting knocked around by my sometimes childish tantrums after crashing or getting shot down. Anyways, they rock. The CH Throttle has a mini stick and I've really never used it because it was way too sensitive and I was too lazy to fiddle with it. Well, I finally got around to setting it up. In this case, as the slew control for the TGP on the A-10C. Amazing results! Took awhile to get it right but now the TGP slew responds perfectly to minor and large movements to the mini stick. If you have one you must first go into axis controls and assign the mini stick to the x and y axis for the slew controls. Here are my settings in the Axis Tune for both X and Y: Dead Zone: 0 Saturation X= 100 Saturation Y= 21 Click on "Use Curve" Set sliders from left to right as such: 0, 10, 20, 20, 20, 23, 27, 30, 50, 100. The result of doing this will make the TGP creep a little when you adjust the mini stick a little and move quickly at full range motion of the mini stick. Essentially exponentially the more force applied. Much easier this way to acquire targets from 20 mi out instead of overshooting by using the key commands for TGP slew or mapping the keys to a hat switch. I'm also getting Maverick acquisitions around 6-7 mi now (26-34 sec flight time for maverick from about 8000 ft). The trick with the maverick, for me, is just keeping the target in the targeting gate on the MFD after making your maverick SPI. I also always use auto pilot (alt/heading) hold when shooting maverick approaches. Anyways, for what its worth, there it is.

  8. SEE POST #34 FOR VIDEOS!!!! I just had the opportunity to spend a couple of days covering Hawgsmoke 2010 at Gowen Field in Boise, Idaho. Hawgsmoke 2010 was hosted by the Idaho Air National Guards 190th Fighter Squadron, who were the winners of the 2008 competition and thus became the hosts of this years. Since the 190th won again this time, the second place winners will host Hawgsmoke 2012. On Wednesday Oct. 13 I spent a good part of the day on the ramp at Gowen taking shots of ramp activity and arriving A-10 teams. It was pretty much heaven for a Warthog fan!! It was a very busy place, with aircraft being serviced, readied for the following days competition, landing, taxiing, parking, running up engines, etc. There was only a very small contingent of media covering the event, and we were allowed to shoot pretty much anything we wanted on the ramp. I talked to a few of the maintainers a bit but they were extremely busy....the Idaho ANG crews were trying to take care of all the visiting planes to get them ready to go the next day. The next day, Thursday October 14, I traveled to the Saylor Creek Range and spent about 4 hours watching A-10's bomb and strafe. Much has been said about the sound of the GAU-8/A cannon...I have heard it compared to a chainsaw in sound. I can tell you that words cannot really describe it, and video does not really capture the essence of the sound either. It is LOUD and very distinctive. When the aircraft fired from longer ranges, you would hear a popping or crackling sound much like a string of firecrackers...this was the sound of the supersonic rounds passing overhead...then a second or so later you would hear the actual ripping, roaring sound of the gun. Had you been on the receiving end, you wouldn't have heard anything, you would have dead before the sound got there! There were 18 teams and 40+ A-10's at the competition. The overseas teams did not fly thier own A-10's, thier pilots flew in commercial and used "borrowed" A-10's for the event. Most teams brought 4 planes, a few brought a spare and a few brought less and used one or two borrowed birds. At the range, the teams first performed a high altitide bomb drop using BDU-33 practice bombs. The A-10's flew the approach at about 17K feet and released at about 7K feet. From the ground, the A-10 is impossible to see at 17000 feet and even when they got down to 7000, you had to be looking in the right spot to get a visual on them. They then made a Maverick pass, no missle was fired, but they had to get a lock with thier Maverick. All aircraft were carrying two CATM-65 missles, one EO and one IR. In one case, I heard the pilot advise the range controller his missle would not activate in TRAIN mode and ask permission to make his pass in ARM, the range controllers denied the request. I am not sure if that was purely a safety issue as the CATM-65 has no actual motor and can't leave the rail, or if it was just protocol for the contest. The planes third pass was a low altitude bombing run with BDU-33 25 lb. practice bombs again. Thier fourth pass was a 30mm gun run at a strafing target. If they missed, they had to make another strafing run from a longer distance. After all the gun runs were complete, the planes had about three minutes to join back up in formation and make a formation pass over the range, and that ended their time. A few things I found interesting....all the A-10's I saw were C models....as evidenced by the cockpit coaming and/or the presence of Sniper pods, or Litening pods on 2/10. All the planes arrived with the two CATM-65 Mavericks, two TER's, and usually two baggage pods. Some had the AIM-9 rails, some did not. The only difference was the Davis Monthan birds that arrived with ALQ-131 pods on station 11 and one CATM-9 on station 1. The teams used a "degraded" gunsight reticule and bombing mode for the event. At one point I heard the statement they were bombing in HARS mode. I presume this means they were using the older electronics and not the IFFCC of the C model. Even at that, they were usually very accurate. We were probably 500 to 600 yards from the bomb target, but only 200 yards or so from the strafing pit. We were just slightly to the left of the gun line for the strafing pits, so we were very close...I was very surprised we were able to be that close, but its a testament to the confidence the Air Force has in the accuracy of the weapons system. I hope you enjoy the pics! They are possible due to the hospitality of the 124th Fighter Wing Public Affairs Officer, Capt. Tony Vincelli, and his staff! A 190th Fighter Squadron A-10 taxies in during Hawgsmoke 2010. Mavericks on 3 & 9, TER's on 5 & 7, and an AN/AAQ-28 Litening pod on station 10. An Idaho ANG A-10C taxies past with the Boise foothills in the background. The nose of a very dirty A-10C out of Nellis. The entire plane was sooty from gun residue, obviously this one gets shot a lot!! Another Idaho A-10C taxis past the Boise Air Terminal. A "Warthog" A-10C from Barksdale, tailcode "BD". An A-10C from the Michigan "Red Devils" 107th Fighter Squadron with the speedbrakes open. Michigan ANG A-10's taxi to thier spots on the ramp. An enthusiastic A-10 pilot from the 23rd Operations Support Squadron, Moody AFB. The Flying Tigers have arrived!!! The much cleaner of the two Nellis birds. Some planes still carry the AN/AAS-35V Pave Penny laser spot tracker along with the Sniper or Litening pods, and some do not. A Blackhawk puts in an appearance. Blackhawks and Apaches are also stationed at Gowen Field. Most of us tried unsuccessfully to wrangle a ride in a Blackhawk, or better yet, an Apache!! We can dream can't we?? BDU-33's on a TER ready to go. Another Idaho A-10 on the runway. Warthog nose art on the Barksdale A-10C's of the 47th Fighter Squadron. This is my favorite Warthog nose art. A Nellis A-10 pulls off after a pass over the Saylor Creek range. A-10C aircraft from the Idaho ANG 190th Fighter Squadron in a tight four ship over the Saylor Creek range. I was not at all surprised to find out the 190th won again...thier flying and shooting was excellent. An A-10 from the 303rd Fighter Squadron out of Whiteman AFB at Hawgsmoke. A 190th FS A-10 pulls off target over the Saylor Creek range. 30mm rounds from the A-10's GAU-8/A Avenger cannon rip through the left panel of the strafe target at Saylor Creek range. An A-10C from the 45th Fighter Squadron at Davis-Monthan AFB makes a strafing run during Hawgsmoke 2010.

When I go to exit the mission the text in the box is also blanked out. I have card drivers up to date. I am using NVidia 9600GT 512MB with XP SP3

  11. The manual came back from the printer today - all 2.5kg of it!! So I went over to Staples and had it bound into 4 sections - it would have been ridiculous to try to handle a 650 page single book after all. The printing quality is absolutely superb!! So pleased with it. My photos (attached) aren't so good because it's indoors at night, with incandescent lights. Tom.

  12. Good definition of what a "beta" is there. Very handy for people who might have somehow mistaken it for a finished game. :)
    1 point
  13. Well...I enjoyed DCS A-10C beta for only a few days. I'm finding it's still quite limited as far as what's possible. I'm unable to play the campaign without crashes. Several cockpit switches trigger other things to happen requiring many of the key commands to be memorized, including all key commands on the HOTAS which I thought we matured out of after Flaming Cliffs, in-game performance is quite unoptimized, various weapon systems such as the TGP are buggy, and pixelate after bhot/whot changes. Many training missions still lack voiceovers, and the trigger system for event changes is very buggy. Voice comms aren't there yet. And multiplayer isn't 100% yet. This really only leaves you with the quickstart missions that replay the same voiceover in each one, and free flying, which is not a bad thing to have fun with, but it isn't that impressive 7 days later. You can do just as much learning about weapons and flying by reading through the manual as everyone else and not really be "behind" when the final version is released. Hand flying the A-10 isn't that hard at all, actually much easier than the Su-25 in FC. The main thing is don't deflect the stick fully aft, or it'll spin around like an Extra 300.

  29. Yes, I was the founder of the 185th Reservoir Dogs on 7th July 1999!!! It was an online squadron for Falcon4 Pilots and is still going to this very day! Unfortunately, I had to resign command due to changes to my work life which basically swallowed up all my liesure time. I'm very proud of the fact that it's still going strong 11 years later though!

  32. Based on the requests I received, I put together a basic landing guide which is linked in the OP of this thread. It's geared towards teaching newer people how to land. Those who have been gaming with flight sims for some time will probably know most, if not all, of the concepts discussed.

I had a look at the link and the monitor there is very much like the one I have (only it's not in any monitor casing)... it is 8.4" (mine are 8") 4:3 ratio so they will cover the back of TM Cougar MFD's and have little extra in vertical (and of course in width). The photo shows it's got VGA connector so you can connect it to any video card that has either VGA or DVI connector (they all come with DVI-VGA adapter) so to me it looks fine to use.

There are two download possibilities: Software and Manual and right now they both return a "test" screen. So they are apparently ready for it but there is nothing there yet. I expect it might show up here first. (Link - http://ts.thrustmaster.com/eng/index.php?pg=files_faq ) They are still listing "Ready for takeoff" as today but it's after business hours now in France, I think.
