  2. Hi Folks, I just wanted to make a light hearted and gentle reminder that you CAN fly this sim with a cheap joystick, and untill you try and do something complex like start the engines or fire a maverick, you can probably get a lot of enjoyment out of just flying around and crashing and working things out for yourself. In my case I did find that I was warned off Blackshark because it was soooo complicated from forums I got the impression that you certainly could not do it without reading the manual. When I eventually decided "what the hell Im getting it anyway", I found that I was blowing stuff up within a couple of hours. Its not that hard. I STILL cant start the engines, but I know that if I am ever that way inclined I can read a manual and find out. However it turns out the KA50 was not really my cup of tea. Anyway my point is, sometimes looking on here, I would get the impression there is no point buying the sim if you cant afford a TM Warthog, or an X52 or a set of hand crafted aluminium rudder pedals, which is totally not true, and there is also no point buying it if you dont have 6 weeks to put into groundschool before getting into the cockpit. Most people dont have that much money or time to devote to a sim. To all those people I say dont worry, just get stuck in with what whatever stick you have, and whatever time you have. Even if its only 5 minutes whilst you wait for the rice to boil, just get stuck into an instant action and you will soon start enjoying yourself, even if you dont know what your doing! Of course if you find you want to start the engines and no matter what buttons you press they wont start, or your HUD is all wonky, Then the manual would be a good idea, then the video tutorials and of course ultimately all the people on here who are happy to help!

  3. IMO it should not be called FC3. It should be called DCS: basic(or something like that). So that this "basic" version will be the platform for all DCS series. no more lock on, no more FC, they are the past, and DCS is the future. so all the lock on and FC players will join up to the new DCS community so that no confusion regarding about version and other unwanted conflicts. ( just like how Cliffs of dover will take over il2 1946 in the next few years with patches and expansions. ) And last, sell it cheap (half the price of DCS A-10/Ka-50) and most importantly, make it STAND ALONE and ONLY work with DCS series. so that we all move forward together and no one is left behind. just like from flanker 2.5 to lock on/ LOFC1,2. just my 2 cent

  4. I just wanted to introduce myself. I just downloaded the game from Steam and found this forum. I'm completely amazed by the game and the community here! I've been a long time lover of flight sims and the most recent one I've owned is the Microsoft FSX. I've been out of the scene for some time now and decided to return. So last week I bought the Thrustmaster HOTAS X and "then" went shopping for a game to play. That's when I found DCS A-10 Warthog. I was at first intrigued by the complexity of the game and was a bit weary to jump in, but I found myself drawn to the challenge of really learning to fly the Warthog. In the sim world at least. So here is the list of my gear: Asus G73JH-RXXB05 laptop Thrustmaster HOTAS X joystick (will this be adequate to play this sim or did I just waste money?) Next on the list TrackIR 5! Also, here are some issues I'm having: First one is a really novice one. I have set the game to be in "full screne mode", but for some reason the mouse pointer has gone invisible. So I can't see where or what I'm doing with the mouse. Is there a simple solution to this? I know, I feel stupid for asking this... Second, and this is a HUGE one. Where in the world do I begin??? Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Oh, and you guys are awesome!

  6. > I haven't bought A10c yet for several reasons, one is the $60 asking price. So, save your pennies, for me it was entirely worth it. When you hear discussion on these forums you might think that the Su-25T's Advanced Flight Model means it is on par with the A-10C. It is not. The A-10C is a quantum leap ahead in virtually all areas of the experience. It looks better, the flying feels better, the immersion is better, there is a huge amount of cool new stuff you can do (buddy lasing, JTAC, fuzing, PGM use, datalinking, TACAN, ILS, navagation computer, weapon release profiles, etc etc etc ....). It took me a while to really appreciate the A-10C (thinking it would be a yawn-fest of turkey shoot bombing from 20 k feet) but now I'm totally hooked - as there is so much more you can do (night operations with NVG blew me away). For me FC2 is now a simple pleasure to fly, just like Rise of Flight. A distorted view for sure, but that is just how good A-10C is, and how much a better virtual pilot you'll become. Plus, if you get up to speed on the systems of the A-10C some of the knowledge will carry over for DCS:Next (where you are doing the work at twice the airspeed). In short, save up (a few less beers for a while [did I really just write that?]) and get yourself A-10C.

  8. "like your private license, is a matter of putting in 40 hours in the air to qualify. More or less." Trust me, it's MORE.....a lot MORE:thumbup: Took me well over 40 hours to be confident that I wouldn't kill myself in a Cessna 172:lol: on that note, I'm having a blast flying DCS A-10 and trying to fly it well. This is about the best flightsim I've ever laid hands on! and I've have em all...dating all the way back to my Commodore-64/Amiga 500 :)

  11. Yeah but it looks and sounds cool. To me, at least. Plus, on the bright side, now I have a profile pic I'll call "Aardvarking" it. I think there would be a psychological impact on the truck park.

  13. As the OP has noted obviously you can fly the sim without a HOTAS (heck you could even do it with a keyboard or Xbox 360 controller) whether or not that's optimal is an entirely different matter. With modifiers a traditional joystick is very effective in DCS A-10C. Difficulty in a sim varies from individual to individual. I personally do not view DCS A-10C as "difficult" if you RTFM and put some stick time in you'll be on your way (I personally was able to start the aircraft, takeoff, land, employ weapons effectively after 6 hours of book and stick time). Guess the moral of the story is to play the sim the way that you want to play it; don't allow public opinion to deter you from enjoying the sim the way that you want to enjoy it.

  14. You are quite right. It is sometimes very easy for us Veterans and other members who have just caught on quickly to forget just how intimidating the SIM is, from FC2 to the current reiteration, the Warthog. I remember being intimidated by the A10A In LockOn Gold with the training tutorial having me do an Immelmann turn???? WTF!!!! Whatever happened to 'Up' and 'Down'? Barrel roll? Split-S? Speak English gawddammit! :P I slowly figured it all out and it takes time. To that end, DCS is currently far more user-friendly than it's predecessors insofar as that it caters from Game Mode to Simulation Mode and here's the important bit: It is eminently scalable from Game Mode to Sim mode. In addition to the Flight Manual, there's also the Quick-Start manual (often overlooked but an important reference for the newcomer). Together with the Wiki, Youtube and forums, there is a wealth of info to aid. Mirroring my inevitable progression in knowledge was the inevitable 'upgrade' of hardware and peripherals......It all comes with time and is definitely not necessary at the outset. In my case it just happened until you blink your eyes one day and you're surrounded by wires wondering WTF happened? So yeah - we'll do well to remember our first couple of weeks in the Virtual Flight SIM world and tailor our advice accordingly when dealing with newcomers to the hobby :)

  19. Eleazar , you're not wrong at all , I think this is a good idea, although if FC and DCS ppl knows what is what , and for the noobies , forum like this one can clear their mind on purpose... but call it DCS:FC3 (or whatever FC will be ) Basic or something like that I think is really the best option +1 :smilewink:

  25. @Pyro - perhaps more clearly... They aren't the same thing because Mach number is technically a ratio, and TAS is a quantity. (Therefore obviously not interchangeable in an equation.) However, TAS is corrected for temperature and pressure, and therefore essentially velocity through an airmass. Mach number is the ratio of velocity through an airmass to the speed of sound in that airmass, so the two will relate pretty closely. (Hence "proportional.") Divergence in the two, I think, is due to compressibility error at high airspeeds. AFAIK, RE can be found with V*DLE/KV, where V is TAS, DLE is distance from leading edge, and KV is kinematic viscosity... no recollection of Mach number in there. Correct me if I'm wrong! I didn't know that CL was calculated with Reynolds number... I only knew it as a number based on the shape/design of the lifting device, changing with AOA. It seems right, though, since turbulent flow at high Reynolds numbers would spoil lift production. (At most angles of attack.) So for all I know you're an aerodynamicist, and I'm just a dope with a couple college classes in aerodynamics for pilots.

  27. Ok, so I've learned a thing or two today and from that I have made some updates to my HeadTracking system :smilewink: The FreeTrack wrapper application I developed was not really required, as FreeTrack already provided the same functionality already, I was just unaware of that fact  But that makes things even easier, as there's now only the HeadTracker.dll to worry about. If you used the earlier version you should remove the wrapper, and undo the change you made to your FreeTrack shortcut. There's no need for that with this new version. Just place the HeadTracker.dll and HeadTracker.prefs into the bin/headtracker/ folder and you should be set. <DEPRECATED> HeadTracker Binaries.zip </DEPRECATED> And this time I'm including the source code, for those who are interested. <DEPRECATED> HeadTracker Sources.zip </DEPRECATED>

Landing. Export.lua

  31. I started a dynamicscampaign project. The parts needed are: * mission generator * mission result assessment * campaign database. Of these I pretty much completed the mission result assessment part. This was adapted as the 104th's pilot statistics system - since I don't personally care much for pilot statistics (this is visible at http://stallturn.com/104th/). I started working on mission generation. The ability to read and write the mission format produced an intermediate project called lottu (http://stallturn.com/wiki/en/lottu) for modifying the mission file within a track recording. The mission generation work was not complete. I hadn't started the campaign database but this is the most straightforward part (although still a substantial body of work). You can build a database based on the published Order of Battle for any scenario period. My dynamic campaign system has been on hold for a while as I improve the pilot stats system (there have been a lot of little things, and 'edge cases' with the logs themselves) and also have switched to mucking around with rendering an F-16 cockpit in an external program for a little bit. Unfortunately A-10C patch 1.1.0.8 breaks live statistics. Changes were made to support events (kills, crashes etc) as triggers and this has broken the debrief.log in several ways: * the debrief log is not written until a mission ends. It is a pain to wait 8 hours 'till a mission ends before processing stuff. Worse, if the game crashes before the log is written you get no log :( * the debrief log format has changed. Unfortunately events are not described by a single line anymore so handling events requires keeping more 'state' during parsing. This is not insurmountable, but is a PITA. Log entries should be one to a line and ideally contain everything needed to parse the event (it sucks linking fired, hit, dead events - all events should cover: who (callsigns for players!), what, where, when how). * the default debrief log format misses a lot of information. For example, callsigns are not logged for each event. To get around this custom scripts were written that place this information in the log. Unfortunately insertion of these custom messages does not appear to be working. Worse, the breakage of the debrief log seems to be a result of adding events for mission triggers. However, this breakage could have been completely avoided through the use of a simple extra in-memory log table (at the cost of about 200 kB per mission, that is, a trivial amount) and have each event log to both the debrief log (as was done previously) and to the new event table (used for triggering). So, not only are pilot stats broken since patch 1.1.0.8 it seems that a 3rd-party (eg. me) dynamic campaign is out until this is resolved in some way. Unfortunately LockOn and DCS have a bit of a history of arbitrary changes that break the behaviour that third parties rely on. Which is why many people build stuff which is then not maintained (changes break it and people don't fix it), and makes it hard for people to invest a year of weekends (required for such a large project) when ED can break the interfaces without any notification and for seemingly small changes (where the breakage could easily be avoided). Apologies for the rant, it is just worth saying what happens for anyone contemplating a large 3rd-party project. It is a real shame IMHO. Edit: Just seen EvilBivol-1's post. This is exactly what I was developing, however AFAICS A-10C patch 1.1.0.8 break this goal.
