  2. I was literally going to take my first dive into VR and purchase a Samsung HMD Odyssey tomorrow. I’m really glad I ran across this thread first, my plans are now officially on hold. :(
  3. That's not called a hint, amigo. That's called confirmation.
  4. Agreed, 2.X has been a day-vmc sim since day one. On the vmc front, it literally can't be overstated the importance of weather to aviation. It's a pilots chief concern after, if not equal to, the condition of the aircraft. Though it's not brought up too often here, weather has been a weak spot in DCS from the beginning. I think they've mentioned a weather system overhaul in the future (whatever that means) so fingers crossed, I guess. At this point, especially with the weekend news distributed today, it looks like they're going to push a release version with a totally unacceptable night environment and carryover 1.5 weather.
  5. It's different, that's for sure, and there are aspects that look better. If you're flying around 1500 ft. AGL and looking straight down at Vegas it actually looks halfway decent. Not great, but it's a little bit of progress. Higher than that though and everything starts looking really bad again, worse even. I can now see orange mountains in the far distance. The city textures are still unlit in the distance and are now actually darker than the surrounding landscape textures. From the most recent weekend news: Addressed? Maybe. Fixed? Not even close. I really hope this isn't the final version of night lighting but I'm becoming more and more convinced that this is a fundamental limitation of the engine they built. Nevada specifically has been this way for years now. :(
  6. Was this a bug though? I thought they were going for a kind of "baked earth" effect. And though it could have used some tuning (specifically, hiding the texture's pattern when at higher altitudes) and maybe a little toning down, I really liked the effect. It added a little needed depth and detail to a fairly barren and monotonous landscape. Just flew the new update and I kind of miss it.

  8. It's the motherluvin MIRRORS!!! Did a total wipe and rebuilt from scratch, checking during each step. With a virgin install and no modules I had working water animation in the trainer mustang. Downloaded the F-5, still works. Loaded my backed-up missions, water is still slippery. Downloaded the Harrier, yay water!! I loaded one of my missions to have a casual victory flyaround. Sitting on the deck I notice my mirrors are black. Oops. Left Shift + M. What. The. Hell. Mirrors turn on aaaaaand...broken water animation. Left Shift + M. Mirrors are off, animations are back on!!. Video proof (and link https://youtu.be/kZ2qYezxAIM since I don't know how to embed videos apparently): Testers/Mods, if the boys in the front office aren't aware yet please let them know that it seems the source of the problem is that water animations are somehow coupled with cockpit mirrors. Or if someone can shoot me the link with the bug report instructions (couldn't find them with a quick search) I can send it in.
  9. Sorry guys, the same problem persists for me after hotfix 3 update. There's no difference. : ( I'm going nuclear: full wipe and clean install, see if that clears up some of these problems. I'll report back.
  10. Another hotfix today?! Gotta say, I like their current pace! : ) EDIT: Very cool, from the change log looks like they might've fixed the 'frozen' water problem too, plus a healthy bump for the Harrier. I'm eager to get home and check.
  11. Yeah, I don't know, they were fine for me a few days ago, now they're not. Seems like a lot of new bugs cropping up over the last few days. I also have super insane contrails that occasionally show up at ground level, then they propagate and dance all over the sky. Large areas (like square kilometers) of missing or super low res terrain in Normandy. Half to one second hangs/freezes when units spawn. Crash/black screen on mission exit. All of those weren't occurring until the hotfixes started getting pushed. It honestly feels like we're moving backward with the patches. I'm wondering if I should go nuclear and do a full wipe and fresh install or stop updating altogether until the stable is released. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ That's the beta life I guess.
  12. This may be related to the 'silvery geometric patterns' reported elsewhere that recently showed up, I'm having that problem as well. (btw, the silvery reflections look awesome, just the tile patterns need to be tuned out!) But another recent change/error I'd like to report is that runway markings in Nevada have become all but invisible. Taxiway and general airport markings seem unchanged, just the runways are affected. Pics below.
  13. Does anyone have any suggestions, maybe something in the configs that I'm not thinking of? I've been through most of them but nothing stands out. My install is also un-modded so there shouldn't be any obvious conflicts. Based on the many hundreds of in-cockpit YouTube videos of 2.5 (and prior) this doesn't seem like a common issue. Any guidance/suggestions are appreciated! Here's a short vid of the issue (which doesn't seem to be working, here's the link https://youtu.be/f86OE6UcmnY ):
  14. True, the flight model came out of the gate feeling pretty polished. It's totally unique in DCS and a real challenge. I'm here for the flight sim first. Combat employment is fun but I get most of my kicks exploring the flight capabilities of the various modules and the Harrier has definitely not disappointed. That said, there is a lot of work to be done on systems integration. I'm used to early access with ~75% of aircraft systems up and running. Sure they're buggy, but available. Harrier is probably <50%. I just got a must-release-before-xmas vibe when early access was announced. Anyway, I'm excited for the Tomcat. It sounds like an extremely ambitious project especially integrating an AI RIO. I may not deep dive into it right away but it'll be a day one purchase for sure. TAKE YOUR TIME, GUYS!!:)
  15. This is basically my view on the matter. Right now I'm flying the Harrier and loving the hell out of it. It's easily one of the most interesting aircraft to come to DCS (despite being rushed out to early release way too soon). Learning how these aircraft operate and how all their systems integrate can take months, then learning to employ them effectively can take months more. For me right now, assuming the RAZBAM crew keep up the development pace (BIG assumption) I'm not too worried about ED and HB's release schedule.
  16. These have been around since the first Normandy release. I agree they seem to only occur when flying/viewing from high altitude, ~5000+ meters. Once they appear they'll propagate and increase in amplitude over time. Very strange bug. ETA: They're also much more apparent and seem to get 'worse' quicker with higher wind settings.
  17. From first person cockpit view (F1) the ocean is completely frozen. The wave heights and whitecaps will be rendered appropriately according to the wind but the water does not move at all. Switch to outside F2 view and the water works as it should, sloshy and dynamic. Back to F1 view, the water is "frozen" again. I first noticed this issue a couple months ago ~2.2 OA, thought I'd ride it out until the updates but still having the issue with 2.5. My water setting is High. Searched the forums and hoggit and can't find it mentioned anywhere else. Any suggestions appreciated!
  18. I hadn't flown Caucuses in years. Once open alpha came out I more or less abandoned 1.x being already kind of burnt out on it. I am so happy to be back. Right away the colors are much better and the needed terrain mesh resolution increase is wonderful. No more flying through bare jaggy pyramids. And of course trees trees trees!! My first descent into the mountain valleys blew me away. On the performance side I'm also really impressed! I ramped most sliders to max thinking 'let's watch the slide show.' Nope, buttery smooth at all altitudes. I can get some jitters when releasing huge amounts of ordinance at one time, like a 76 rocket salvo, but that's to be expected. I also wouldn't be surprised if that gets smoothed out eventually. As for still-needed improvements I'll agree with some of the previous posters, the towns feel neglected. There just isn't the level of detail you see in Nevada or even Normandy. Hopefully they get fleshed out in future updates.
  19. I agree with this one in general. By definition, labels are 'cheats". Also, there seem to be a bunch of people here saying how easy it is to spot targets from the air irl. I'm pretty hawk-eyed and I remember vehicle-sized "targets" (in a non-combat environment) being exceedingly difficult to spot from the front office of a RL airplane. Just like in the sim, you'd have to know precisely where to look if you wanted to find what you were looking for. And I agree completely with the rest of it! If it increases your level of fun, by all means, use them!!
  20. Just as an update, it looks like my problem was that I was using steerpoint altitude, which was zero, instead of DTS altitude. Thanks for the heads-up EtherealN. I've also checked other missions, and it looks like I've just been getting lucky this whole time with my bomb drops! None of them have been using DTS altitude! Soooo, back to the books!
  21. Ahhh, the FAQ. I'll admit, it's been a while since I've visited that dusty tome of knowledge! I'll give it a fresh scour tonight. (I did check the manual, ran through a bunch of different user checklists and performed a forum search before posting though, so I'm not a total dirtbag!) As for the answer, it certainly sounds like that could be the cause my problem. I'll give the DTS a look when I get home from work. Thanks! Yeah, it's not a big deal to me. I'll just go back to ignoring the controller and setting my altimeter to the published field elevation.
  22. I learn things!! Russian controllers, russian rules! All i can say is those controllers in Nevada better shout out field elevation MSL!! (My memory is also jogged that this isn't the first thread on the airport altitude debate! Apologies!) Attached is a track of the actual problem I'm having. You can see that I'm unable to get a solid PBIL when approaching the target in level flight at around 1500 radar altitude. It also shows me successfully testing CCIP just after takeoff. CCIP.trk
  23. There are actually very few situations where a pilot would set their airfield elevation to zero (local aerobatics/airshow displays are all that comes to mind), and they certainly wouldn't get a current altimeter report from ATC saying a 1500ft. elevation airport is at 0ft. elevation.
  24. Maybe this is the first time I've actually listened to ATC, but he keeps giving me an altimeter setting that sets airfield elevation zero, when he should be giving me sea level altimeter. Second, also related to altitude I think: I'm now having a problem dropping bombs in CCIP. I think it happens when I try to drop bombs at a location with a significant altitude difference from my starting point. Example: Campaign 1, Mission 1. I'm tasked to drop CBU-97's on a tank column, but when I get there I will never get a solid PBIL and the reticle never appears. I've tested the weapons system just after takeoff and I'll get a solid PBIL in the vicinity of the airfield, but once I get on target, it no work-y. I've tried approaches to target at different altitudes and pitches, but I am having no luck. I've been dropping bombs in CCIP successfully since beta 1, so what gives?!?!
