I don't know if you want to go the authentic route. 2024 T3 Aluminum is aircraft grade used on cessnas and pipers. 5052 will stand up to corrosion better than 2024. That is why I would recommend it more. Do you have the option for Aluminum clad? Or do you plan to paint over it.

I play at 1920x1080 with a Gtx285. Its a slower and older card than the 6870. It chugs a little when flying low and theres a lot of smoke. But it is still playable. I would guess the 6870 would work. I'm sure someone will pop in here and say how well it plays.
