  1. TY for reply, sir. Would be nice to be able to go quiet. 4870 X2 is two GPUs (on one card)? But would DCS use both? GTX280 single gpu? forgive my ignorance. I need to get up to speed. My last build was pre sli/crossfire options. You think a single gtx280 would run DCS on a 30" samsung LCD at 2560 x 1600? Or am i crazy? also would love some M/B suggestions for E8600 Wolfdale 3.33GHz
  2. I wanna try an build something that will really play this thing. I was thinkin of going for a 30" samsung LCD which runs at 2560 x 1600 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001098 CPU: E8600 Wolfdale 3.33GHz ???? I'm hearing I won't gain much with quad cores on DCS. GPU: here I'm way out of date, but don't mind spending money if I need be to get decent FPS on that monitor (am I crazy to get such a big one?) Can I get away with one GTX 280 or 4870 X2? which would be the best bet? I'll load vista ultimate x64. I been reading lots of posts but would really love some input.
  3. You shoulda spoke up before....I would take BS sans new ME now if i could have it and wait for the ME---though it would be very nice. Funny how a little thing like one guy writing code can mean so much down the road. Oleg had a similar issue I think. Documentation is the key I guess, and not to be taken for granted.
  4. It's a shame about the the US/Ven tension, and such a waste. Frankly....well I won't get into it, but I like Chavez. SU-30 is as good as it gets if you don't build AC yourself.
  5. Well the F-16 is the bull to grab by the horns, for sure. IF ED would do the pit up like we see in BS and give it an advanced FM I would faint in happiness and go over to frugals and read the fun. There's alot of reasons to do it, not least of which is how much action this AC has and does see. And an apache would be a great complement to the BS that's for sure. In meantime boys, buckle down and get us a BS release so I can send you my money.
  6. If you want to play with FMs buy MS. It's been a great step forward to make this impossible---the reason why il2 and LO are fun online. It's an even playing field.
  7. "When the Iran-Iraq War started in 1980, Iran's F-14s, equipped with Phoenix missiles, capable of identifying and destroying six targets simultaneously from a range of eighty kilometers or more, inflicted heavy casualties on the Iraqi air force, which was forced to disperse its aircraft to Jordan and Oman. The capability of the F-14s and F-4s was enhanced by the earlier acquisition of a squadron of Boeing 707 tankers, thereby extending their combat radius to 2,500 kilometers with in-flight refueling. Iranian F-14 Tomcats were used like miniature AWACS, reporting Iraqi fighter operations to Iranian air defense commanders with their powerful radars. In response, Iraqi Mirage F1-EQ fighters flew high-speed, low-altitude profiles, well below the Tomcat's radar limits. The F1-EQ would pop up directly beneath the Tomcat's orbit, briefly illuminate the F-14 with its radar, and fire one or two air-to-air missiles at it. Iran lost several Tomcats this way" http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/iran/airforce.htm Out of 77 original about 20 are reported airworthy today. BTW they have a bunch of SU-25s now too. This also caught my eye: "Around FY91, with the onset of Desert Storm, more than 350 advanced aircraft were bought or made operational including, Russian MiG-27s, -29s, -31s, TU-22M3 Backfires, Russian Su24s, -25s, -27s, IL-76 transports, and French Mirage F-1s. In this period close to $2 billion was spent on foreign weapons systems. At least 115 combat aircraft flew to Iran, out of the total of 137-149 aircraft flown to Iran or crashed enroute [including 15 Il-76s and some number of civilian airliners]. According to an official Iraqi statement, the aircraft included 115 combat aircraft, among them 24 Mirage F1s, 4 Su-20 Fitters, 40 Su-22 Fitters, 24 Su-24 Fencers, seven Su-25 Frogfoots, nine MiG-23 Floggers, and four MiG-29 Fulcrums. Reports that Saddam Hussein ordered 20 Tu-22 bombers to Iran appear unfounded. In 1993 it was reported that Russia was to provide Iran with spare parts, armaments, and operating manuals for the Iraqi jets that flew to Iran during the Gulf War. In 1993 it was reported that China had bought an unknown number of these MiG-29s from Iran, in exchange for Chinese missile technology and a nuclear power station. The two countries had reportedly reached agreement on the exchange in late 1992, with Iran having delivered some of the MiG-29s by the end of 1992. In 1998 Iraq and Iran had high-level meetings to discuss ending their state of war and other matters, including Iraq's request to have its airplanes back. Iran denied it had used any of the Iraqi fighter planes. If Iran had kept the Iraqi planes grounded for the entire time, they are probably nonfunctional -- the Iranians may not be able to start the engines or operate the hydraulics. Other reports suggest that some Su-24s have been added to Iran's existing inventory, some Su-20/22s were in Revolutionary Guard service. The Iraqi Su-25s, MiG-23s and Mirage F1s were thought by some to be not in service, due to age, low capability (MiG-23s) or too few numbers (Su-25). Other reports suggest that Iran had overhauled Iraq's fleet of 24 Mirage F-1B fighters and placed them into service." Watching that vid makes me think the Iran-Iraq war would be an interesting basis for a sim. Probably the the hottest most extended non-guerilla clash of modern weapons post WW2. For all that hardware they got stuck in the trenches....
  8. I knew there was some reason I hate Dick Cheney...
  9. the myth that drives me crazy: there's no market for flight sims. that's the kind of often encouraged misbelief that drives capital away. Far as 1946, I did order mine today--only becasue i am bored waiting for BS and I appreciate Oleg. His next sim will be pretty nice I think---I hope. The Idea that one sim "kills" another is pretty dumb. If we started seeing really great sims which had it all and were good online too---well that might be dangerous. The bare fact that F4 still lives tells you how short of full potential we are. Today ANY attempt at a sim encourages and sells ALL of them. For the price of one decent McMansion in Vail, something really great could be built from the ground up or nearly. And it would sell like crazy.
  10. release asap. patch later. for beta testers it doesn't matter--they fly BS now, as the rest of would like to.
  11. I'm a big F4 fan, but I agree with everything you said to start. You feel like you are flying in a vacum. The combo of a simple FM and simple weather is numbing. It's the weakest part of the SIM IMHO. I could handle the graphics if the thing flew right---but not many true F4 guys are willing to admit what is obvious even to me, who has learned all his little knowledge of jets from these sims. I also had alota fun with FF3 around the time of the first cobra exe. Just before AF. I bought a bunch of pits from the dutch guy and raised hell with the f-15 e, which can carry all kinds of stuff. It just kills you with potential, like LO which has so much good stuff, but the weak wingman, and single repetitive missions, and numerous other small stuff wears you down. The tolerable online capablities held my interest for a time. I think I acutally killed Stormin 3 or 4 times, hehe A DC is out of the question for this code base I would guess, but they could make up for it in alot of ways. Does ED plan on advanced FMs for anything past the 25t and ka-50? Everyone is crying for improved ME too. These two sims are the only game in town as far as jets--though I did play with that strike fighters a bit. The flame thing---usually the thread starts reasonably, then one hot head crosses the line and it's head for the bunkers. But sometimes cool heads prevail and defuse. That lawyer guy from FF3 is funny and sensible. That's it! we need more lawyers!
  12. Always a flamefest when these 2 sims are in the same thread, which is a travesty. You can't admire one without drawing the ire of those "commited" to the other, and when you talk about what would be nice in one, though you have bought the thing and love it, you are a traitor. Someone up there remarked "the dynamic *campaign* is nothing more than a reasonable game theory calculator" nothing more? The mona-lisa is nothing more than a painting---no that's not right. Imagine the mona was the ONLY painting of a woman (or is it really a guy, hehe). Since the DC is so easy, why doesn't everyone have one? It's no sweat to poke holes in the DC, there are plenty. An it's no sweat to do the same with LO, which has all kinds of them. In fact, respectfull hole poking is totally fine and informative to any one with mind open---it's DISSING---using flaws to insult the whole, and claim that because e.g. the FM is wierd in some way, then the sim is trash, ignoring what ELSE IS THERE, that makes you shake your head in disbelief. If you start with the fact that both sims are damn worthwhile if you like jets and simulated combat, and keep that context the debate is healthy and fun to read. But somebody always has to go personal, "take sides", and tell us all why one or the other of these great sims is garbage. Arrogance begets ingnorance at the speed of sound...
  13. well this is a thread about the "darkside", hehe, and the drum is worth a few taps anyway. first if haven't spent at least 40 hours trying to understand and fly the f4 DC, you can't understand the passion of the drum beaters. I haven't flown f4 in 18 months at least, but the experiences are burned into my brain from years of dabbling here and there. I'll go back again, no doubt. To have any chance, you have to know what's going on in the war, adjust your priorites, and re-plan the flight accordingly, an interesting and sometimes tedious process. Finally you are taxiing, and the immersion starts to take hold. The unknown looms like a primordial monster. You do have a bunch of tools in flight to help, and your mind races to keep track of them. Calling for "HELP" is always high on my list with the air threats, hehe, because they can be VERY serious, espcially when you see that little "29" on the panel. Unexpected SAM launches will always get your attention. You have to keep your wingmen healthy and on task. All this and more just to get in a position to attempt your mission. Doing that job will keep you very busy, and then you try to get home. By that time the guy in the tower seems awful real. Then it's time to catch up on the war again, while the headlines fly by, pick another flight and do it all over, and over, and over. The F4 DC really can't be overstated if you have had a real taste. There is nothing to compare it to.....it's a living breathing masterpiece, and you get the scary feeling at times that the war will spill right out into you living room and take over your town. You BETTER win, or else. With Lock-on you get a little taste of this flying online, an the addreniline rush of a fight is real for sure. But the big picture is not there. It's a single action with no history on no destination---which is not to say it's not damn fun and challanging. And with FC you also get to feel like your're really flying (with the 25t) in a way that F4 can't touch. And the graphics are so damn gorgeous, you have to love the sim. I can't wait for BS, and I'll build a serious machine just to fly it. If we had both in one....but life is imperfect.
  14. We are not gonna see a DC in Lock-On. Why? because it would take more man hours than the sim has in it since Flanker. The DC took something like 3/4 of F4 man-hours. It's an unreasonable expectation. But reasonable expectations which make lack of DC less of an issue for those of us who would love one: 1) Large mission data base. I put about 200 hours into FC, but dropped out finally---could not find enough interesting missions already made, and those I did make myself, lacked surprise, and took mucho time. We need a central location with many missions for download. You can tell by the movies there must be quite a few out there, hehe. 2) Improve mission editor. No brainer and not that much work, relatively. 3) Advanced FM's for all flyables-- this would be huge, and obviously they know how. 4) Increased control for player, more wingman options, and the ability to call flights into the air. 5) Improve online interface. these "doable" improvements would just ify a new $80 edition--for me anyway. But I'll take what I can get, and the ka-50 will get me into the air again for sure. If you are serious about modern air combat you of course must have both F4 and LO. The list of what F4 needs is equally long: 1) flyable red AC, well matched to falcon in a to a, 2) Su-25T level FMs 3) LO quality terrain and objets. 4) Damge modeling on alot of stuff 5) lots of little stuff like IFF, etc. Ceratinly worth comparing the 2 great jet sims, ranting and praising. But if you don't have a fundamental respect for both sims-----then maybe you deserve flames from everyone, hehe. In the end the sims are so different you can't say which is "better" without ignoring or not understanding great parts of the other. LO has the look and feel (at least in the 25T), F4 has the war.
  15. this thing will go anywhere http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7273719924862695587&q=ka-50
  16. No need to work up a sweat when you tell the truth. The FM is not the F4 strong suit nor are the graphics, though many swear the FM is dead on. You don't need to know nothing about an F-16 to tell something is missing. I never could figure out the denial on the subject---counter productive since it sorta discourages working on it. But F4 has more work in it than any sim we fly, and it teaches you the most too. It has warts all over, but it's a monster. Nothing even remotely in the ball park of the F4 Campaign exists in any sim I've seen. And there's a ton of little BIG things in there too---jeez look at your choice of wingman commands. Can you point out a million problems with the DC? Sure, but show me another.
  17. wow that would be nice!
  18. Guess that ka-32 is some machine: "The KA-32 helicopter is the leader in lifting capacity, power-to-weight ratio, range and flight altitude in its own class. Seven world records have been established on the KA-32 helicopter." http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/russia/ka-32.htm
  19. MEIN HERZ BRENTT!!!!!!!!!!
  20. I just hope we live long enough to see both AC modeled as well as the SU25T, so we can see for ourselves which we like.....
  21. I was going to comment that that nothing short of a nuke would take out something like "the highest arch dam in the world" untill I came across this "The risks to human life caused by the crumbling dams of the ex–Soviet Union are equivalent to the better known risks from its decrepit nuclear power plants. When three engineers from Hydro–Quebec inspected Inguri Dam in the republic of Georgia in 1994, they found the world’s third highest dam "in a rare state of dilapidation". Only two out of five groups of turbines were in working order, the turbine galleries were flooded by water leaking through the concrete arch dam, and the spillway was found to be "defective". Not only does Georgia not have the money for the urgently needed repairs, but at the time of Hydro–Quebec’s visit the staff working at the dam had not even been paid for six months. Inguri was completed only in the 1980s: the condition of many of the older Soviet dams is presumably even worse." I suggest ED model this carefully so I can fly my ka-50 over there, take it out with the canon, and surf the deluge....
  22. You gotta love the article on the il2. I never heard of it till I started flying the il2 demo way back when. il2 evolved to a fighter sim, partly because there was no comparable axis mud mover. With all the add-on AC available in il2 it still pains me that this AC was not developed for the sim as a flyable. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henschel_Hs_129 yes they didn't make many, but it would have really encouraged more ground attack contests online.
  23. NOW those are the kind of suggestions I want to hear......680i, eh? I better google that one. TY sir. OK...this seems to be THE board at the moment http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingReview.asp?Item=N82E16813188009 what you think? And how bout memory?
  24. the 34 is like a 27 which has been to an extremely good boob surgeon....no scars, incredible shape, but the porportions are suspicious.......
  25. I had no interest in the falcon till I came across F4, back when you got THE BOOK. I didn't know what a flanker was till I read about and bought Flanker 2.0 I never heard of a il2, or dreamed of a Yak 3 till I got the demo months before release. That P-39 in the demo taught you alot about spins-- thank god I'd played EAW. The SU25T? I'd never heard of it. Now I can say I've never felt more like I was really flying than in that AC. If you watch the movies are are not excited about flying the KA-50........something is wrong. I hope someday a dev will do justice to WW1---I want to see the FM that really models the spinning cylinders of the Sopwith.
