If only...Even then I don't believe flying these things is a career one can just get if it's their dream. I've looked into civil aviation and maybe in the future when I can afford it but...The RAF (and I'd presume USAF) won't accept people below a certain standard of eyesight, and mine, whilst good, isn't perfect like they require. Can't do anything about genetics! For some reason having laser eye surgery to perfect vision doesn't count, can't really understand why but...It means I'll never see the inside of one of these things! Man, what I'd do to fly ...any fighter from the spitfire onward!

Please sympathise with me DCS community...A friend of mine joined the RAF 24 months ago or so, and is currently studying to start flying his new aircraft having completed training in the Hawk... Next week he goes up in this: I'm not usually a jealous person, but knowing he'll be flying this whils the fastest thing I ever fly will probably be a cessna...It makes me feel sick! I am so, so jealous of all you fighter pilots! Random and pointless post out. Being a simmer sucks when people get to do the real thing! Con

Nope - Not sure why!

I leave it on - Makes the sim more immersive in my opinion. Otherwise it's like you're a camera attached to a fixture. Bear in mind I play without TrackIR!

Hey all, Well on my way with learning the weapon systems etc now...But the CDU has been looming on the horizon. I know this is a rtfm topic, but the manual has over 100 pages on this. Anyway, I seem to be coping and doing missions just fine without it, so what exactly does it do? I understand it's primarily navigation but how much do I really need to know? Cheers
-
For me A:10 was much easier to get into the air with, but the weapons systems are much more complex. The CDU is something I am yet to learn and looks to dwarf most of the systems of the KA50 (though I'm yet to work out what the CDU actually does...at the moment it's just "navigation stuff"). Anyway, that said, the game comes with an excellent quick start guide which takes you through the basics...That in addition to the newbie tutorials will put you in an excellent position to start missions very quickly.
-
Can't wait for that one :) I'd imagine it'll get its full release about the same time as A-10 (maybe) so I'll be very occupied.. Judging by the guys over at the forums though, anything less than 16gb of ram, a sandybridge cpu and SLI'd 570s wont run it...

Hey all, Was just browsing through my Steam games and realised that last year I had bought IL-2 1946...Anyway, I've looked it up a bit and it seemed to have been released in 2001. Some screenshots look okay but...I'm not sure...Are the graphics horrific? I love decent flight sims but if the graphics are too bad then I will just stick to A10. Anyway, worth a go? It's quite a large install!

I would much much much prefer Afghanistan/Iraq terrain.
-
Sounds fair enough - Rise of Flight charges for every single extra aircraft and they're hardly of the same complexity as A10. I still don't really see the use of the Nevada terrain...Training is..Dull :)

Probs :-) Mission is sunset Sierra - does auto startup switch it on?
-
Hey guys, got the mission paused atm...Anyway, heading out from the airport and suddenly (and for no apparent reason I'm aware of) my auto pilot shuts down, master caution blinks and altitude starts flashing on the hud, sooo...Check the CDU and "CADC fail". Check the Warning light panel and CADC, EAC and GCAS are all lit up...This kind of stuff is way beyond my diagnostic ability atm - any clues?! Cheers :D

I miss my little Con! (one in the vid isn't actually mine...) sorry, I've not helped! :D

Why does it have to start facing into the wind? I understand that if the aircraft is doing 350 knots then the missile will accelerate at 350 knots + whatever the rate of acceleration is, but presumably it would be chasing a target also moving at a similar speed which negates said acceleration advantage. Similarly if firing backward at a target on your own tail the missile would accelerate entirely under its own energy, however this would be toward a target moving toward the missile at (eg) 350 knots, negating velocity advantage resulting from forward facing flight..At the very least this would force evasive action from attacking craft and force it off the tail. Maths was never my strong point though...I won't even pretend that I'm proposing some kind of viable formula! lol..

Hey guys, I was just looking up flight tactics in general and how it is important to manoeuvre enemy aircraft into LoS..Why aren't missiles (specifically AtA) on rotating racks which are adjustable in azimuth and altitude? Surely this would make sense as then the vehicle could attack from any angle. It'd take some immense situational awareness to keep track of this type of weapon system but surely some of it could be automated.. I understand this would in some cases impact on aerodynamics (eg of aircraft is in steady flight and the missile points directly down, suddenly you've got a missile shaped airbrake), but at the very least rotation in azimuth would work? I know there are probably some good reasons why it's not so, given that the aeronautical engineers tend to be pretty smart..But my common sense tells me it should be possible! Cheers
-
Ahhh that makes sense :) Thanks

Great replies people, youv e been very helpful so thank you. I have a new question :D I've been reading the manual and am about half way through...Anyway, under the Maverick section it talks about ATA (automatic target acquisition) mode, though it doesn't go into much depth. Am I right in thinking this mode would auto stabilise on an area and scan said area? If so, how do I enable it?! It doesnt explain how as far as I can see! Cheers

Damn, can't rep story from iPhone!
-
There's no fun about it. The fact that you are trying to have fun and do these kind of things is a: insulting to the developers, b: insulting to real pilots and c: insulting to our community. This is a simulation, not a game, and I will be writing to waggs to request he revoke your key until you submit a 3000 word essay on why professionalism is important in virtual aviation. Now get off my site and start writing.

I've just spent an hour reading the manual over the CDU section and feel a bit more confident with it, though I'm still not entirely sure of how to set a mark point with the TAD - Also, setting a guesstimate locale with the TAD is less accurate than boresighting the position isn't it? cheers
-
Thank you both
-
Absolutely agree, i'm learning it because it was mentioned in another thread and I think it may help my target acquisition...Took a break after page 5...Makes my undergrad degree look positively riveting!
-
Yes I think so too after seeing another thread! Cheers for reply. Final question..The F10 map..I feel like I'm cheating when I use it but I saw it is "AWACS" so is it not actually cheating? Also, It gave me a few enemy indicators but there were loads of tanks/aa etc...not everything appeared, why's that? thanks
