As GGTharos said, sometimes flying high over the short range SAM/AAA danger is the answer. Only fly real low if you have no choice due to the larger, longer range SAM's. In real life the A-10 pilots had trained to fly low for a possible war in Europe. When they got to fly in an actual conflict - the 1991 Gulf War - they found that it was safer to fly high since the Iraqi long range SAM's and the MiG threat had been dealt with.

I wasn't bothered about the quality of picture I ended up with so I just used Paint. Click on Image, then stretch/skew and "unstretch" the picture. Click on image, attributes to see how big your picture is. Something I've found since then is a freeware tool called "visualizer photo resize" Just google that exact spelling and you'll find it.

Mate, I've had Lockon since Christmas 2003 and I still die all the time. :music_whistling: Since I die so often, pilots.xml is always on the "recently accessed files" in my text editor. As for getting into big furballs with multiple bandits, try and avoid that. While the bandits are as far away as possible, try to sort out where they are and what plan of engagment you will have. Try to take them on one or two at a time. That may involve something other than simply flying into the middle of the lot of them, you might be better going around one side of them. An AWACS in the mission on your side can help you figure out where they are, ditto your RWR. Use your AI wingman wisely. You can instruct him to pincer left/right and manouevre yourself the other direction, then come back in and and try and catch a bandit between you. You can also lock up a particular bandit and tell your wingman to engage him, then you unlock and pick a different one to engage yourself. IMHO your AI wingies will do better if you tell them what to do than if you leave them to do it themselves. And when you get to the last mission in the default F-15 campaign, dont worry if you do not get a mission success, it is pretty much impossible for the AI that you are escorting to kill the ship, it has too many SAM's. Count it a success if you shoot down the bandits.

Because in real life combat missions, they only put 2 Mavericks on those pylons. This was discussed many years ago on the old UBI forums. Apparently if the inside position on the pylon is used, then when that missile is fired, then the flames from the motor can damage the aircraft (I think it is the landing gear and the landing gear pod that gets damaged). Also there is a lot of aerodynamic drag when 3 missiles are fitted. Typical weapon loadouts in the Gulf War had single Mavericks on positions 3 and 9 for even less drag. You sometimes see pictures of all 3 missiles fitted, but it seems that is usually only if they are are ferrying missiles from one base to another.

any one know how to change squadon insignia?

Check my answer to you about logbook in your other post (lost campaign). -
Yes you can, I did it myself. I am from the UK so I wanted my picture as a UK pilot, so I put it in ....\lockon\PilotLogBook\Pilots\UK Make your picture the same size as the default ones in the game - 128 x 128 pixels. Make the name of the picture the same as your pilot name, for me my pilot name is Brit_Radar_Dude so the picture was Brit_Radar_Dude.jpg Here are my standard logbook hints and tips you may find useful. Log Book Problems. To get your logbook working you should create a pilot and make sure the "default" box is ticked. Also notice that even if you checked the "default" box on your pilot his stats are only updated when you fly for that pilot´s country or when your pilots country is in the same coalition, meaning that if "your" pilot is American the stats of missions you fly for Russia for example will not be stored in "your" pilot´s log unless you make sure USA is on the same side as Russia. Some missions and campaigns you download from Lockon Community websites may have the pilot name already in, so you would need to edit it to your pilot name to make sure you get the mission stats logged to you. A couple of things...... 1) He must be alive. Once he is dead, then you might still be using his name as the pilot name, but he won't log any time. Each time he dies, you have to use notepad or a similar text editor to edit the file C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Eagle Dynamics\Lock On\PilotLogBook\Pilots.xml Search for your pilot name, then move a bit more along the line until you see Status= If it says 0 (zero) then your pilot is dead, change it to say 1 (one). This is a real pain in the *&% to have to do . Try to bale out when you get shot down, so you are still alive. If you can't, hit ESC and quit before you die. Having to constantly edit the Pilots.xml gets old real fast. Remember status = 0(dead), status = 1(alive and kicking). 2)You may have a problem regarding which country your pilot is from and which planes you try to fly. Overcome this by making sure that your pilots country is in a coalition of the side he is flying for. For example I have made a British pilot, but there are no flyable British aircraft in Lockon. I like to fly Su-27, so in any missions/campaigns I make myself (or D/Load from the Internet) I always edit them so that UK is in the same coalition as the Russian or Ukrainian Su-27 I want to fly. That ensures my flight gets logged. Some missions/campaigns are classified so you cannot change the details including pilot name. To declassify them so they can be edited, use password EAGLE for the stock ones that come with the Sim. Any missions or campaigns you download from Lockon Community websites may have the password in the Readme file or the mission briefing. If not, then overwrite the password by pressing CNTRL SHIFT C and putting in your own new password eg 1234, then declassify with CNTRL SHIFT D 1234, Now you can change weapon loadout, fuel load, aircraft skin, pilot name, etc, etc. Note that Lockon doesn't seem to remember that you've replaced the password, so each time you restart Lockon you'll likely have to do it again. Yes, the recording is saved as a track file. You can mess with it afterwards. Here is my standard Track editing info. Track Editing Record your track as normal and save it with some suitable name. To be super safe and to ensure you preserve the original track, copy it to another name before you start the editing process. The default location where tracks are saved is (I think) .....\lockon\missions\tracks Go into the Mission Editor, choose OPEN, then bottom right of screen you will see TYPE OF FILE, choose TRACK FILES. Navigate your folder structure to wherever you saved your track and choose your track by clicking on it, click on MAP, then (instead of pressing FLY) you choose (top left of screen) FLIGHT, VIDEO EDIT. Now you can go through the track, pressing S to pause / unpause the track whenever you want to make a change. While it is paused you can change camera views with the usual F1, F2, F3, F4, F5 etc view keys, zoom in / out, etc, F6 weapon view, F7 vehicles, F8 target view, F9 ships, F11 for airfield view - whatever you want. Shift F10 to switch labels on / off etc. If you use F2 external view, press Y twice to get rid of the status bar at the bottom of the screen before unpausing. You can use CNTRL/A to speed up the running through the replay if you have a long bit you don't wish to edit, ALT/A to slow down and SHIFT/A to return to normal speed. Be warned, occasionally changing views can change how the track replays and alter the outcome of the track ie a missile might miss when it hit previously! I think things like the use of helmet mounted sight is one of the problem areas, ditto the padlock command. Once you finish, save it with a different name to preserve your original track. Always best to delete / overwrite nothing till you are 110% sure you dont need it again ;) Sometimes a tracks views are locked, use a utility to unlock them. The original utility was called LOTU, then came LOTU v2.0, then LOME, then LOME v1.1 which is the latest version, link below... http://www.lockonfiles.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownloaddetails&cid=82&lid=789&ttitle=Lock_On_Mission_Editor_LOME_v1.1#dldetails Hope this helps.....

At least this one I can help you with. Lockon patch v1.02 and all later versions changed the firing of weapons for US jets to make them more like the real life jets. Spacebar fires the cannon. Always fires the cannon whatever weapon you have selected. Just like the real life jets. Enter key is for bombs, rockets, missiles. It fires whichever weapon is selected. Depending on your stick, the Enter key might already be bound to one of the other buttons/triggers. NOTE that the Russian jets are unchanged. Spacebar fires everything on Russian jets.

The AI cheat. They can see you through clouds, they never lose sight of you. They will detect you, lock you up and fire the first shot faster than a human can. Yep - go supersonic and it gets quieter. Speed shown is in your cockpit air speed. As you climb into thinner air, you appear to slow down. If you press F2 for an external view you will see your (I think) ground speed which will be more like the speed you'd expect to be travelling. Of course you need to see your Air Speed since that is more important to you to keep the plane flying under control. If the speed you saw was ground speed you might accidentally get into a stall at higher altitudes. -
Lockon Flaming Cliffs (FC) as a single disk addon was never released in stores so you will not find it in the same store that you found Lockon. It is only sold through online specialist stores like http://www.simw.com or http://www.rcsimulations.co.uk etc and through the http://www.lockon.co.uk website. Lockon GOLD was sold in regular stores and is a 2 disk pack containing both the vanilla Lockon disk and the FC disk. There wer a number of GOLD packs that had a faulty FC disk. I believe they were all in the US and that European GOLD packs (which were released somewhat later) were all OK. Joey_45 is only partially correct when he says that faulty GOLD disks wil be replaced. The GOLD publishers (Evolved Games) gave the task of handling the replacement disk issue to a PR company in the US. I read on another Forum months ago that the PR company have now run out of replacement disks so if you get a bad GOLD then you are out of luck. That situation will doubtless not change since it is years since GOLD was released by Evolved.

New Su-25 campaign: Crisis in Georgia.
Brit_Radar_Dude replied to Ferski's topic in User Created Missions General
Yes, it is very frustrating to try and make the AI drop a SAB candle bomb and make the flares illuminate the exact area of ground you want. The SAB container is aimed at the target but the flares pop out as the SAB travels forwards and may illuminate the edge of the target area if you are very lucky. As you have some control with the mission editor over the direction that the AI approaches the target for the first attack, then you can try and make the flares overlay the area requiring illumination by setting the AI's TARGET to be a distance beyond the area and the 1st SAB dropped may work. But when the AI turns and does the next attack and drops the next SAB, it is unlikely that the area requiring illumination will be between the offset aim point and the AI jet when it releases the SAB. -
...and here's me thinking no-on else here is old enough to get that reference.

Very sad :( Years ago I was at an airshow in the UK and the Italian team Frecce Tricolori walked past me smiling and laughing after their superb display. A week later they had that awful accident in Germany. I could remember the faces of the pilots that were killed, quite upsetting.

I suspected it was a probably a simple calendar mistake, but was secretly hoping it wasn't - I could've made Monday. Drat. Never mind, another time..........

When the AWACS gives you info about enemy aircraft it is in a BRAA format - Bearing(with North as 0°), Range (in Nm or Km depending on US or Russian jet you are flying), Altitude(Low, Medium, High), Aspect (Hot - coming at you, Cold - away from you, merged - within 5 Nm, Flanking - flying parallel to you). EXAMPLE Enfield 11, Olympus - Bandits bearing 155 for 127, Angels medium, Hot Enfield 11 - that's your radio callsign Olympus - that the AWACS radio callsign 155 - that the bearing of the bandit(s) 127 that's how far away it/they are medium - bandit(s) at medium height... Hot - ...and coming at you. The AWACS always seems to say "Bandits" whether there is one or more than one, so dont be fooled by that. If a brand new threat appears on the AWACS controller's scope, a flight just taking off for example, a 'POP UP GROUP' call with BRAA information is given automatically. When a target is within approx 50Nm (Western AWACS) or approx 90Km (Russian AWACS) then a call will be given automatically to warn you. You can initiate a response from AWACS too. Press the 'BACKSLASH' key followed by the 'F5' and 'F1' keys to get information on your nearest threat. Note it is nearest, not the most dangerous! A toothless enemy transport might be the nearest (and some mission designers use this Lockon limitation and will deliberately place one in a mission to confuse the issue). If the AWACS controller detects no threats, a 'CLEAN' response is given. To use the AWACS to Identify an Unknown Aircraft: 1. Lock up a target aircraft into STT lock or bugged in TWS.. 2. Press the 'BACKSLASH' key followed by the 'F5' and 'F4' keys to have the AWACS controller, 'DECLARE'. AWACS will respond with either 'FRIENDLY' or 'HOSTILE'. You can also ask the AWACS to give you a vector to a tanker (if one is in the mission), or a vector home to base.

Chaff + Flares = one button
Brit_Radar_Dude replied to digitalJE5U5's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
In vanilla Lockon, pressing "Q" will dispense both. Did that default change for FC? My FC setup still has "Q" key for dispense chaff and flares, "Delete" key for flares only "Insert" key for chaff only. But I can't recall if that is the default or what I set up myself.
