  1. Very cool, DEM+GeoTIFF will be nice as a baseline to make original terrain.
  2. My guess is Kickstarter backers get it before general DCS World users can. Although a lot of this speculation could be easily answered by RRG and ED. ;)
  3. My main curiosity is if I can make use of public domain DEM height data and GeoTIFF tiles as a template to work up new original terrain? If not, what are the baseline source import formats?
  4. That clarifies things a bit. Would be interested in RRG validating that premise though. I'm wanting to jump in and start working in the SDK soon so I can start organizing a terrain project I have in mind with a few people I know.
  5. By ready, I assume you mean release details are not yet figured out between RRG and ED, not that the tools don't exist. I appreciate that you chimed in, but would be much more interested in a more concrete clarification from RRG as to what they have planned for EDGE SDK release. Your reply deflects my question, doesn't answer it.
  6. The main reason why I pledged was to get access to the EDGE SDK. What process do we need to go through to get access to it? Thanks, -Brad
  7. It's a complex system. You'll never fully do away with bugs. Slowing down patch frequency only retards progress. I find the OP's suggestion largely invalid.
  8. Would be interesting to have the YP-80A up against the Me-262.
  9. I think it would be key to be mindful of who is used to host a live stream. The main reason why Twitch is good is because they can promote your stream on their front page. That gives you visibility to those that aren't always native flight sim fans. That means new blood. Preaching to the choir can only go so far, especially in a niche market. I think it's important to target your pledge and marketing promotion updates at general gamers. Maybe setup a Steam Greenlight or Early Access page where a wider cross section of gamers can see your work and buy into it. As was mention in your previous videos there is a stumbling block to get past to attract new blood to the genre. I suggest targeting Steam and Twitch on a regular basis to help alleviate a bit of that.
  10. Sure thing. :) Every once in awhile Cloud Imperium Games does a live stream. The last one they used Twitch to stream it with Twitch promoting it on their front page. The content of the stream was mostly just getting a bunch of the development staff in front of a webcam and teasing things like aircraft development, scenery design, the SDK tools. They also monitored the live chat roll and answered questions and also gave interviews of what many of the staff do. Some of the content involved showing the Crysis SDK with them showing off the model content live. The idea is to have a live video stream with content and information to show off for several hours to coincide with the ending of the initial pledge drive. For example a really condensed version of that is the Wingman's Hangar they do every Friday. Here is the one they did today:
  11. I agree, if RRG takes anything away from this experience it's to learn from what CIG is doing with SC. So little of their pledge money was raised in their initial Kickstarter. Something only like $2.5 million. The rest of the $21 million they've raised so far has been open ended pledge campaign ran on their personal site with options for Paypal, Stripe or Amazon payment. They've been getting their most spikes from vehicle marketing promotion. They whip up brochures and videos and do promotional sales for things. They also do routine live stream events. I really think RRG should take a hard look what CIG is doing and adapt some of what is working well for them. Once the Kickstarter is over I believe it;s in their best interests to continue to run an open ended pledge campaign from their own site and and maintain stretch goals, promotion of individual aircraft tied into pledge promotions spaced out over the course of the development, quarterly live streams and maybe a newsletter like SC's Jump Point and a show like SC's Wingman's Hangar. A critical eye needs to be given to SC's methodology for development. CIG is apparently doing something right in their methodology that RRG can adapt. On the other hand I disagree that getting a stall at a flight sim event helps. While the message is targeted at like minded individuals at a flight sim event, it's like preaching to a choir and you get no bump in sales from it. The cross section that ends up seeing your booth is too small to matter in the grand scheme of things. Take it from someone that has done conventions, promotions and events over the last few years. You might break even depending who is footing the bill to be there, but you're not going to see a spike in sales because of it. If anything, if you don't do it right you'll lose money on it. I do events because it allows me to get away to new locations and see a bit of different scenery -- a paid vacation. But as for making a spike in visibility or income...it doesn't help any. You end up finding that you do a booth because it's fun to get out and interact with like minded people, not because it's going to be a marketing or sales improvement. The combat and non-combat communities are stratified IMHO. To give you an idea I did AVSIM Fancon this year as a vender and promoted DCS World there. Almost everyone that went to the event were there for X-Plane, FSX or Prepar3d. It's not that those people were not interested in DCS, it's that they've been in their box doing the same thing so long that they didn't know much about it. IMHO, I think DCS was rather well received even though it's a totally different ecosystem than what AVSIM caters to.
  12. Just different wording on saying that the WWII theater and aircraft can be mixed and matched with other theaters and aircraft.
  13. Photoshop trollery... It's fake.
  14. A live stream worked wonders for Star Citizen and CIG. Would be cool to run one like they did on Twitch and have Twitch promote it. They ran their live stream for 24 hours but doing a live stream 6 or 12 hours before the deadline running up till the end time might be cool. Answer questions on the chat and you could have people Skype in for interviews and questions too. The issue is making sure you have content to show during the stream -- either sneak peek pictures, video or interviews spread out evenly over that time. Heck, even just sitting down and tinkering in the EDGE SDK or in 3DS Max showing work in progress to burn some of that time would be very interesting to many. That should give you a spike.
  15. I was on the edge about pledging, but the SDK tools being made available convinced me. With it being the first of the month a lot of people are probably getting paid too this week. So, hopefully that'll help spike pledges. So, who do I need to talk to about the EDGE NDA? ...Yes, I did make that bad pun *chuckle*
  16. Type-casting a developer has negative connotations. Let them develop what they want to and not limit them. I'd like to believe they're more capable than being a one trick pony. Allow them to show some diversity in their talent. I suppose it's not their fault you have a limited vision of their capabilities though. They are talented enough to do more than only copters. :smilewink:
  17. Yep, it's about the best access someone can get of an A-10 fuselage. They also have another A-10 in the same building but it's the full aircraft up on it's own gear -- which makes it a bit more difficult to get technical details from. I've got around 30 photos of the fuselage on the cradle back in 2010 when I was coming back from L.A. to Wichita. I spent the morning at Pima and then took the boneyard bus tour.
  18. Nice in theory, but a heck of a long way till that'll be implemented. Take it from someone developing for the Rift and for multi-projector both. Both have their place in flight sims. Situational awareness might be better in a Rift but interactivity is so much better in a projector simpit.
  19. [facepalm] Several people in this thread humor me.
  20. None wants to make a good F-84F on any flight sim, so I typically settle for F-86 on sims like FSX. I don't see anyone doing an F-84F for DCS World either, so F-86 is welcome. Same gunsight and many of the same instruments common to 50's era fighters.

    The Cube

It's best just to get the lens throw right on the projectors you get. Only panel that a mirror might be of use would be the ceiling, but you don't need anything special there, just a flat first surface mirror. Mirrors on a cube build would be in the way of the ceiling projection. Only reason to get mirrors on flat panel projection is if you don't understand lens throw.
  22. It's a rendering engine. It's only as good or bad as what you shove into it as far as server backend, art assets and whatever you bolt onto it.

    The Cube

Actually native resolution pixel height is the most important piece of information when it comes to something like this. Projectors can lock about any pixel width you want to feed them. I'd much rather do 1200x1200, or 1080x1080 than 800x800 or 720x720. You can lock 1:1 AR just fine on most modern projectors. That is why I'd get a 1920x1080 projector instead of a 1024x768 if budget wasn't a major issue. Projectors you need to think of them in a different mindset than LCD panels. The second most important is the lens throw. You'll need to pick a lens throw that matches up well with what you want to do. In something like Flim's cube he's using 0.72:1. Might be more interesting to use 0.8:1 projectors and mount them behind the screen with a hole for the lens. Much less to obscure the ceiling projection that way. Lens throw and mounting location set the size of your cube. You can't just use random projectors in a cube design. You need to match the lens throw and mounting location to the size of the cube. My idea for the cube would be to make a frame and stretch Rose Brand Tendo screen fabric to it. Would work great in a totally blacked out room where you wouldn't inadvertently have light bleeding in from the back.
  24. I always get a chuckle out of people who post binary premises. There are any number of options for people to do, Oculus Rift is just one of them. The main reason why people do simpits is for tactile feedback on controls. You don't get that with virtual cockpit using a Rift. You miss the point overall for simpits. Simpit builders want more than just "joystick (hotas, collective, ...)" and "... a mouse". The consumer Rift will be $300. It's always been promised at that price point.
  25. It's essentially more or less 2x 5:4 without a pesky center bezel in the way. Makes for ideal blu-ray movie watching though as most cinematic blu-ray movies are 1920x800...which is also 21:9 aspect ratio.
