Excellent!! High res terrain and a new vanilla frogfoot model. Time to freshen up my mud movin. Thanks ED. This in my opinion is above and beyond, some say never look back but FC is a truly fine piece of programming and now will only be better. Bravo, much clapping.

My first suggestion, putting aside other numerous possibilities such as stability modes and accidental key presses, without more data I would simply suggest checking your trim settings via RCTRL+ENTER, make sure that your rudder is not trimmed off center and pitch is set right, I always set mine a bit forward to get the nose down. Maybe a track file would help assess the situation better.

Opinions Please! Display options for DCS: BS
mjolner replied to Doc. Caliban's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
The individual pixel size becomes a factor with an increase in screen area. This then requires you to sit farther back from the screen to get the same pleasantly smoothe picture. If you go up to a significantly larger screen you will need to re-situate your computer/simming area. Anywho, I think you have already decided. -
Holding a constant heading and smoothly changing heading are more difficult in any heli than in a fixed wing. It really takes practice, patience and a smoothe hand. I myself never hold down the trimmer while completing maneuvers, I find that a quick tap is all that is needed with small delibrate corrections. I also find as in a fixed wing that smoothe and correct coordinated use of the rudder and cyclic is required for turns. Then once the turn is complete I ensure the rudder is neutral or at the proper position for torque correction. In addition I always have all four channels engaged and I use the collective brake for small alltitude changes. If you view Frazer's amazing demo tracks realize that he (Frazer ) has stated that during most of those maeuvers he trimmed very little if at all. I keep quoting him on this but I think its an important point.

Kind of OT, but have you seen the Ka52 in ARMA 2, not a sim in the DCS sense of the word of course but its still great fun. I made a single player mission where a marine rifle squad captures a communciations array and later has to defend. A pair of Ka-52s rise up above the tree line and attack their position, pretty fun to see it from the other perspective. You can "fly" the thing too but after playing Black Shark its pretty silly. It has a cockpit with glass panels but its pretty simplistic though trackir compatible. One other note, the 3D model and sound are quite exceptional.

For the Op, if you are having problems and you think the chopper is delibrately trying to kill you, hit Right Control + Enter to bring up the axis display tool, nice way to diagnose a problem. I always cancel trim settings when transitioning to a hover, atleast from high speed anyway. Just make sure you are ready with cyclic in hand to counter act any reactions. It is hard to believe but this thing only flies as well as it is controlled. If that makes any sense to you.

As far as I am concerned they can take as long as they need to finish this sim. I have been waiting 15 years for a truly high fidelity sim like the one A10C is (looking) shaping up to be; so what does another year or 2 matter. The prospect of a complete high resolution 3D cockpit, weapon systems model, advanced flight model along with some updated or higher res terrain and whatever else they have in store for us has me very excited, but after so long a wait, I can wait a little longer. I am yet to even scratch the surface of the Ka-50. I shamefully admit that I havent even finished a single campaign because I spend so much time just tying to master the flight controls and firing at static targets and I have had the sim since release day. As the for the ABBRIS all I have managed to do so far is turn it on and put it in map mode. So if the A-10C is anything like the Ka-50 and I am sure it will be, I can wait, I have plenty to keep me busy. Pointless musing over.

You may have any livery you wish under any country you want easily. In your DCS root directory find scripts/database/db_countries.lua. Under Russia (as an example) you will find a list of units, with their corresponding texture choices such as: color_scheme("{B72394A9-596C-433B-9F1F-742F67B1BCC1}", "Demo paint scheme # 22 \"Black Shark\""), Copy and paste into every other country under Helicopter = { cnt_unit("{3457BB1E-523F-4C24-BBEA-58D028623F05}", "Ka-50", { and you will have your favorite skin in any country you wish. Since the lastest patch adds the Ka-50 to every country it is even easier than before. Be sure and make a backup of your original db_countries.liua in case you accidentally delete it or something.

Never heard of it until now! A bit pricey but I like what I read. I may consider a purchase after more research. Thanks for the heads up.

I agree with Wicked, now with DCS there is no real value in the Alphasim product. I think some may still buy it simply because they do not know about DCS or they just want to fly in FSX because they can. In terms of flightmodel, DCS is far superior in everyway. Alphasims 3D model is not even up to the polycounts that are possible in FSX, it is IMO way overpriced and of inferior quality. FSX choppers are an after thought, you wont have a proper trim implementation or an accurate stability control system. CHoppers in FSX are untamed beasts with sloppy flight models. There may be exceptions but I have not found any. But I fly FSX. WIth some of the decent 3rd party products and some great scenery like FTX, FSX is fantastic. I have a bunch of great stuff from Carenado (GA), and of course Shockwave ( AccuSim ), LevelD, PMDG and RealAir to name a few. None of those aformentioned developers have bothered to produce a Helo for FSX, the reason I believe is becasue the FM is not up to the task. ED is the first to do it right.

Definitely agree. After an hour or so of flying I am starting to adjust to the new trimmer, and I like it better, my precision has noticeably improved in only a short time, I am using an old banged up cougar so appreciate the forgiveness with the re-centering. On the other hand, having to delibrately re-center after trimming to regain tactile control takes some getting used to after the old way. With the old way, with small corrections I really never felt the need to recenter but maybe thats why my flying was rather slopppy. With large trimming corrections such as during high speed flight I would always recenter as quickly as possible. With the new trimmer recentering is a must in either case. But as I said I like it, have to readjust but ultimately I will fly better. The audible clackering of the trimmer (I assume is meant to simulate a relay of some kind in the real 50) is awesome, really immersive. Thanks ED

Nice job Waldo, I liked the semi sarcastic attitude about the BS, pretty funny at times. Many tutorials seem so dry and formal, nice change. Sometimes we flightsimmers take ourselves too seriously.

I am still curious about your frame rate issues. I am runnin an E8400 (@ 4.4ghz ), 680I with 2 GB and a 9800GTX and I get between 50 and 120 FPS depending on whether in cockpit view and/or flying over a city. This is with settings maxed and 4x AA 8x filtering. I cant see a minor overclock really gaining you that much performance. I can run my E8400 stock at 3.0 or up to 4.6 and only see a gain of about 10FPS. Now a Quad or i7 overclock might be different but as others have said BS wont take advantage of that anyway.

One additional note. When in auto-hover mode, if you engage Descent mode on the collective, you can descend to the ground without the stability channels cutting out. You will just have to be ready to compensate for the ground effect cushion which in auto-hover your not trimmed for. Once down, disengage descent mode, then auto hover, done.
-
Oops sorry Bee thats an important point, just remember to disengage auto hover before you get to low. For myself, there is no way in hell I am gonna land on a FARP without using auto-hover to help assist in positioning. To others with more skill, good on ya!

For anyone to truly assess why you are having issues they would need more info or even preferably a track file of your landing procedures. 1. Follow the vertical landing with rotor-in ground effect tutorial to the letter. 2. Verify your TRIM setting prior to landing ( RCNTRL+ENTER for axis display tool ). Trim at landing/hover config should be close to neutral. 3. Immediately Canel trim once wheels on deck. 4. An easy procedure as demonstrated in the Basic Flight Producer's note, is to establish a stable auto hover then engage decent mode or slowly ease down coollective, easy as pie. 5. I personally find that the Ka-50 is really easy to fly once established in any given regime, its the transition phase where things can get crazy. Following the procedures in the manual and lots of practice is the only solution. Hope this helps

Superb flying, very uncanny control. Whenever I try any extreme manuevers, invariably my blades collide and the shows over. Guess I need better collective control before I try anything too daring.

Makes no sense what so ever but this worked for me too. I loaded misisons over and over to see if was just a fluke, but the cloud bug has not popped up again. My global setting was already set to "override any application setting". Whatever, it works. Thanks Mvsgas. Running the lastest WHQL for Geforce 9800 GTX and WINXP.

That greyscale processing test is very interesting, although I wonder how that really interprets into cockpit head movement. I mean look at it this way, I am still using a Track3 with vector and have very smooth movement and fine control with 6D0F but I am sure when comparing the TR3 to the TR5 with the same greyscale test, the results would look for very poor for the TR3. Regardless, I bought one, time to upgrade.

Great work! Thanks for your effort.

Great! Thank you, much appreciated. It is listed in the options, LALT+F1, HUD only view switch. Should be listed as SHKVAL, ABBRIS, HUD only view switch for the slow kids.

I remember when playing the Ru version of the game that you could bring up a "popup" view of the shkval TVM. Cant remember the key combination and its not listed in the options menu or key command PDF. Can anyone refresh my memory?

Thanks for the tutorial RCN, very helpful. Some Rep for ya.

Does this occur when you run the game from Modman? Maybe try to restore all your files from the modman backup. Uninstall Modman and try from there? Hope you wont have to waste a deactivation.
