  1. As I'm slowly getting more comfortable with the Huey I've started to change my landing pattern from deliberately slow and careful to faster, more aggressive approaches better suited to operating in hot LZs. So far what works best for me is: 1.) approach LZ at ~80kts, 300ft AGL 2.) at ~500m from landing point I lower collective, raise the nose and step on the right rudder to enter a 500ft/min descent while slowing down 3.) I try to maintain a stable glidepath of around 500-1000ft-min descent with the speed slowing down to ~ 20kts 4.) at around 75-100ft AGL I start to pull some more cyclic to to slow down to almost a stop, raise collective and counter the tendency to swing right with quite a bit of left rudder and settle her down Small vid "landing air cav style":
  2. I've put around 16 hrs of flight time into the Huey so far and I tend to agree.
  3. Practice, practice, practice. ;) Using curves for cyclic inputs helps, too.
  4. Thanks, guys! Hehe... yeah, that's my checklist after touchdown, too. :megalol:
  5. I've captured one of my better attempts at an autorotation landing on video: Still need to improve a lot with synchronizing rudder, cyclic and collective inputs, but I'm slooowly getting there. The actual touchdown was surprisingly smooth, looks worse in the vid. Oh, and to the guys at Belsimtek/DCS: awesome job!
  6. I can taxi the Huey without much problems. Of course not (yet) as precise as the pilot in the vid, but then he has probably a lot more time in Hueys than I do. ;) And yes, taxiing requires only very little cyclic input.
  7. For those who think the Huey is "too jittery": read Robert Mason's memories (Chickenhawk) about his 1st time in a Huey. ;)
  8. I simply landed on ALL helipads to be sure. :D Once on the correct one the CO will tell you to shut down the Huey.
  9. Make sure you have enabled the autopilot in options/special/UH-1H.
  10. I'm spending quite a lot of time hovering and slooowly moving around the airbase at ~3 feet. After a couple of hrs you begin to notice improvements in the way you anticipate the Huey's movements. I'm still FAR from feeling comfortable in the Huey at slow speeds but I'm getting there. What an amazing sim! :)
  11. Make sure you didn't put the starter generator on standby by accident and that the fuel switch is on.
  12. Been flying the Huey for about 2 hrs now. Amazing feeling of flight. Well worth the wait. Need to get back into the cockpit.
  13. Finally! And the auto-updater runs pretty well for me (and my DSL conenction) around 300kB/s.
  14. Thanks for the checklists, much appreciated!
  15. Great news!
  16. There is a ton of interesting and cool stuff I'd love to see in DCS. Nukes are not one of them.
  17. Thanks! That works very well indeed.
  18. I'm uploading the files right now, will take some time (2-3 hrs) though since I have a rather slow DSL connection. Will post a download link later this evening.
  19. Just tried out the textures and am very impressed! As upupandaway wrote there is indeed a bit more noticeable tiling effect at higher altitudes but the overall increase in details more than makes up for that. HDR: normal Spring: Summer: Autumn: Winter: BIG thanks to rockwelder for his work!
  20. Dropbox isn't suitable for this kind of traffic. It's great for sending files to a buddy or three but it won't provide the bandwith needed for dozens of us greedy leechers to get those beautiful textures. You need to upload the files to a dedicated file hoster.
  21. I'll be in my bunk.
  22. What does "on hold" mean for Nevada? Has work on it stopped until EDGE is released or are they still working on both? I'm asking because a new map for DCS is the one thing I really would love to see. You know you've seen enough of the Black Sea region when you see a random DCS screenshot and think "Oh, that's south-east of Kutaisi airport, right by the hut of old Petja and his Natasha. I wonder if the dog's well again."
  23. I almost don't feel silly for checking this forum every 15 minutes. :joystick:
  24. Thanks for taking the time to provide such a detailed explanation, much appreciated.
  25. I was about to say: "Hey, just give me a shout and I'll give you the password for our server and let you know when we play MP again. We usually fly at least 2-3 times a week and fly coordinated missions, often with a human JTAC, are 'serious', yet relaxed people and welcome every skill level". Then, I thought, nope. I'd rather not. :music_whistling:
