Problems transitioning to "realistic" radios
WarriorX replied to Bahger's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Thanks Headspace for the info! -
Need Clarification on some NAV related issues.
WarriorX replied to LeonRedbone's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
You can cycle thru the mark points you create by switching your Auxiliary Avionics Panel (AAP) Steerpoint Dial from Flight Plan to Mark. Then you can use either your steerpoint toggle switch on the Up Front Controller (UFC) or switch the HUD as SOI (Sensor of Intrest) and hit the DMS switch up or down. Your marks begin with the letter A and you can assign new ones all the way up to the letter Z. The next one you create after Z will restart at A, and begin the cycle again. P.S. Welcome to the Forums LeonRedbone!!! -
Problems transitioning to "realistic" radios

I would check with Headspace, he has a lot more experience in the Mission Editor arena. I have not "dipped my toe" in the Mission Editor yet. -
Problems transitioning to "realistic" radios
WarriorX replied to Bahger's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Yeah, Bahger, I'm like that with the CDU still....man creating a new flight plan and populating it with waypoints still gives me fit's. I'm really looking forward to a robust multiplayer experience with Teamspeak Comms filled with human pilots, combined with some Guard chatter. -
TrackIR 5 much better than 4?
WarriorX replied to brewber19's topic in Controller Questions and Bugs
Also Yskonyn, make sure there is not any possibility of a reflection behind you that shines back into the Trackir. (example: reflected sunlight off a picture frame...etc.) The further your head is from the Trackir camera, the lower the detail/resolution that the camera can work with when trying to see changes in the 3 reflected dots, and their position changes. -
Problems transitioning to "realistic" radios

Bahger, it's my pleasure. If you would like to check it out, here is a link to the Tutorial I put together covering Realistic Radio Basics. If you have any questions, or want to add any input, let me know. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=61349 -
Well put Scabbers. JEFX check out this thread, they are discussing something similar and maybe it will shed some light on your frequency issues in the Mission Editor. (Check out Geskes post #4) http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=63409 Let me know what you think.

Problems transitioning to "realistic" radios
WarriorX replied to Bahger's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Bahger, I do not know if you are doing a cold ramp start in this mission as I can not watch the track, but there was a problem in Beta 2 that came up with the radios and when in your start up procedure you began using the radios. I do not know if it is still present in Beta 3. The problem came up when you activated/used your radio during a cold ramp start with just the battery switch on...It seemed that when the aircraft later switched to APU/GEN power, there seemed to be a reset of radio dials back to the default cold start positions all the while still graphically showing the position the pilot had switched it to. This can make the pilot confused when they look at the radio set up and think that every switch is in it's proper place and they do not get the expected result from the radio. I suggest that the radio's are not operated until after APU Generator+APU GEN switch are both on. -
Hi JEFX, Glad you got things working. As for the Tanker, I would suggest creating a mission with the Tanker alone. Assign it a frequency, and see if it works. There are some great tutorials and pre made refueling missions that I have seen on the boards, but if they were made in a previous Beta version, they probably will not work in a current Beta version. But, if you can find one, load it up and practice communicating with the tanker. I have not created or designed any missions yet so I am not sure if it is correct procedure to give the same freq to 2 separate entities (AWACS & AFAC) Try giving each entity a unique frequency. Regarding immersive radio chatter and a Guard Freq, I do not know if it is planned as a feature of DCS A-10C. But as of now this is the extent of radio comms. From the DCS A-10C Flight Manual (located in your Program Files/Eagle Dynamics/DCS A-10C Beta/Doc) Page 647: Radio Frequencies In order to receive radio communications from other mission entities and have your transmitted messages received, it is vital that you have your radios set up properly! If not, you will be essentially talking to yourself. When a mission is created, each friendly flight and airfield is provided a VHF AM and UHF frequency. These are generally noted in the mission briefing and should be set to your radios at the start of the missions. Generally, the following rules apply: Your flight is most often assigned a UHF frequency. You will use this channel for inter-flight communications. Other friendly flights operate on a common VHF AM frequency assigned to the operating area. When set correctly, you will hear radio communications from other flight operating in the area. AWACS is assigned a unique VHF AM frequency. The JTAC is most often assigned a unique VHF FM frequency. Each airbase ATC is assigned a unique VHF AM frequency. As such, you may have to juggle multiple frequencies during the course of a mission and the frequency preset features on the radio will become a big help. This is the template from which the mission designers should work from. It may not be uniform in the beginning, but I think most all of the Community will conform to a set standard of radio frequency assignments in their mission like those described above. Keep up the good work, and let me know if there is anything else I can help with. There are a lot of great people on these forums, and they have been very instrumental in my understanding of this Simulation, hopefully they will be able to answer the questions that I cannot.

Boot and Rocketeer, will you guys post pics of the build in progress and when it's done...I would love to see the finished product.

JEFX you are welcome pal. Regarding tanker and AWACS freq's: If the mission designer gives a tanker and/or AWACS freq in the mission brief or via radio in game, make sure to write them down. Tune the proper radio and try to make contact. If you feel you did it all by the book, and still had problems, you can always try to open the mission up in the mission editor and check the freq's in there, just to make sure they match.

Josh, do you have simped pedals hooked up thru a TM Hotas Cougar?

Maybe this will help. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=61349 Give it a look and report back if you have any more questions. I will be glad to help. I highly suggest doing a search for Shu's Airport Diagrams. They are a wealth of information, and have the tower frequency for each airfield. Or you can hit the F10 key in game and left click on the map over an airfield and a text box will appear showing the tower frequency. Edit...here is the link to Shu's Airport Diagrams:http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=60370&highlight=airfield+diagram

I understand...which ones?

I would be happy to help you with whatever you need. Just ask away and we can get started.

Nice setup Talon. The CH Control Manager software does a great job of capturing those key combo's, even the windows key, and left and right variants of all the CTL SHIFT ALT WIN

I think the Ergodex is a "cousin" of the CH MFP. The MFP works with Win7. I use it as a simple keystroke generator that mimics a keyboard input in the eyes of the game/sim you are using it with. It comes with 25 keys that have an reusable adhesive backing that can be placed on the Plexiglas front screen. The keys can be moved around, stuck, restuck as many times as you wish. There is probably a limit as to how long the adhesive on the individual keys will last, but 3+ yrs later the keys are still going strong for me. You can purchase 25 more keys(26-50) to add to your options. Once the keys are placed, you can use the CH Controller program to assign the keys to a keystroke macro as you wish. The cool thing in my opinion is that the MFP is completely reconfigurable. If you like, they even sell the plexiglass screens so that you can one set of keys set up for your fav game, and then switch the plexiglass out with another set of predesignated keys as you wish. The only thing limiting you is the size of your bank account. The downside is that the MFP has only one style/size of key. There was some talk at CH of adding more key designs but that never materialized. This detracts to some degree from the immersion, but the advantage of it's reconfiguration more than makes up for it. Just my .02 Check it out for yourself:http://www.chproducts.com/retail/mfp.html

It IS necessary to run the CH software prior to running DCS A-10C. The "map" needs to be loaded by CH software each time you restart your PC. The buttons can be assigned as a Direct X button, but I did not go that route. I assigned them a keystroke. Note: I had to assign the UFC key assignments in the options menu to a set of blank keys, then I programmed those key assignments to the MFP keys via the CH software. I am still a bit "ham fisted" when it comes to the CH software and I fully realize that I am not using the program to it's full potential. I dont know if the MFP's can be programmed to be "seen" as a controller by the game, but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will let us know.

Copen, I have another suggestion. Use these: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=60370&highlight=airfield+diagram They are made by Shu, and they work well. As Dratsa said, use the F10 button to bring up the map and then see what airfield you are at, and where on the airfield you are. Then use the airfield charts by Shu and orient yourself to them and when you are given taxi/runway instructions, then you will know where to go. As to your 3rd question, all the tower cares about is the direction you take off from, as to where on the runway you start from depends on your aircraft's gross weight, and it's thrust to weight ratio. I use all the runway I can get, so I start from the threshold of the assigned runway/direction. The runway's number assignment is given by the 2 compass bearings that you would fly to land or takeoff from said runway. Think of a compass face and needle, the needle aligns itself to 2 compass bearings on the compass face, they are 180 degrees apart.

Thanks ACU Tech, the CH MFP's have been a great investment in my humble opinion. They have served me in some capacity with almost every simulator that I have. The CH programming software works great, and the panels have lasted a long time. I can post the pic's I used as the background and the printing specifics if any other MFP users would like. (This is the only drawback to these MFP's. Printing a background can use up a lot of very expensive ink, would be nice if CH made a LCD screen that the buttons could be placed on.) I use a cheap Office Depot book stand to hold the MFP at a useable angle for me. http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/324396/Office-Depot-Book-And-Copy-Holder/

Shu did you ever think of a CH Products Multi Function Panel? I set mine up as a UFC and it works rather well. I just used a fraps screenshot of the UFC and made 2 prints, one as a background, and the second I cut out the buttons and used a Scotch Glue Stick to stick them to the individual buttons. To maintain a workable scale I had to split the UFC in half and put the right half of the UFC on the bottom of the left half. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Very informative Rev, thanks!

No problem my friend, thanks for the reply.

Revelation, what freq did you assign the JTAC? I dont remember seeing it in the on screen prompts, or the briefing. I called on both VHF AM, and UHF but no reply from JTAC. I will try it again, and confirm.
