  1. It could be that the gearbox associated with the coax design takes up a larger vertical footprint than a conventional gearbox. So if they wanted more head-room in the rear cabin of the Kasatka, that could be a reason to go with a more conventional layout. Of course, I've never been able even lay eyes on a Kamov product, let alone poke around in the gearbox area, so I'm just going off the top of my head. Also, am I the only one that thinks the Ka-60/62 is an AS-365 clone? Sleek, twin engined, fenestron tail, cetacea name (Dauphin 'dolphin', Kasatka 'Orca')
  2. I thought SPJ jammers were simply a kind of selective transponder? They get a radar pulse, and send back a bunch of similar pulses at different intervals to create false range information (seen in game as 'strobes'). I cant really see that making an aircraft a 'bright target' to someone who's antenna may not be pointed at the jamming craft at the time. I do, however, agree that a SPJ jammer would drop jamming aircraft radars when it picks up missile guidance radar, either from aircraft STT lock or missile self-guidance. A certain change in defense priority there. But if no missile is in the air, and you have, say, 4 aircraft, 2 with TWS-attack capability, and 2 without, would you not want to make life harder for the TWS-attack capable birds before the missiles fly?
  3. I wouldnt bet on TWS being all that superior. An ECM system would, as has been explained, deny ranging information based on threat priority. Would it be so unusual to assume that an ECM's threat library may assign a fairly high priority to a 'scan' from a platform capable of firing from TWS? Just me trying to get into an EW Tech's head here, not so much trying to start an argument. EDIT: Simplified threat priority, based on what I was thinking of, highest priority first: 1. STT Lock 2. TWS-capable scan 3. Non-TWS capable scan 4. Search-only scan (IE: ATC, AWACS, GCI)
  4. May? Hell, more and more it looks like I'll end up getting BS and Spore at the same time. There goes what little of a life I actually have...
  5. He's already up to 89? Sweet zombie Jesus! Anyways, on to the topic of NOE and angry things trying to make you cease to fly. NOE only works because it helps to put things between you and the other things trying to kill you. Stuff thats higher than you will likely still be able to see you unless there is a mountain, building, trees, large ship, or dinosaur directly between you and them.
  6. Smoke markers tend to use white phosphorous and some kind of dye compound. WP burns fairly hot, so I can imagine infantry having a Bad Day if one went off close by.
  7. Fly the MiG-29S 'Fulcrum-C'. Its the only flyable that carries them.
  8. Just to say it, I will wait for this thing to come out. Wouldnt be the first time I was sitting with baited breath for the next game/sim to come out. My only worry is if it's released at the same time as Spore. I have yet to actually own my own cat, though everyone else in my family has. Although, I did work as a volunteer at a big-cat saanctuary. Cougars are fun :D
  9. I think Alfa just killed ten kittens for that one.
  10. Of course it's delayed. Every time someone asks about the release date, it gets pushed back another week AND Alfa kills a kitten. ED has a lot of dead kittens to deal with as a result...
  11. Hmm, swimming frogs... I wonder when Sukhoi will finally stick pontoons on that thing?
  12. Robinson is probably loving the free advertising there :D
  13. I guess I was just thinking back to before FC was released. I actually enjoyed reading over all the stuff on the 25T, even if it was mostly proceedural.
  14. Any chance of Eagle releasing the Black Shark addon's manual, like they did with Flaming Cliffs? I'd love to get my grimy paws on it and start picking through the proceedures and such on the new chopper while waiting for the sim to come out.
  15. I was thinking the same thing. There must of been JUST enough pressure in the accumulators for the FCS to keep it flying somewhat straight. I wonder if it could of been salvaged if that happened over a flat piece of earth, with no trees or misplaced buildings?
  16. I dont know about killing something A2A with the HARM, but I think there is a pure passive version of the R-27 in exsistance somewhere. I guess it would be an AWACS killer?
  17. Wouldnt be the first time an airplane-killing missile was turned into a SAM-killer. Anyone remember the Standard-ARM?
  18. Only one helo is flyable in Black Shark, and thats the single-seat Ka-50. The two-seat Ka-52, and other helo's, are not flyable.
  19. Reminds me of one of the Wing Commander add-ons. The captured dralthi with post-it notes or pieces of masking tape scattered around the dash with what the near-by instrument is written on them.
  20. *pokes server* Ok, who knocked Hamtaro off his wheel?
  21. But do you fly bricks with wings and two big engines up to sub-orbit in real life?
  22. 1. F-15 needs to be going fast before it gets up there in low earth orbit. Up above 25-30k keep your speed up and your climb rate low and just ease your way to 40k. Otherwise, you end up doing what you're doing. 2. Clutter notch and terrain masking are probably your worry here. Only thing I could suggest is to open up the distance and come back towards the target, in trying to decrease the angle downward your radar is looking. Also, you DO have your antenna tilt controls mapped, right? 3. For the Eagle, I think you can only IFF in TWS mode. Not too familiar with this bird. 4. Dont have much experience killing T-Frogs. I'd say a heater-shot from the six is useless. And if he's low, clutter notch and terrain are probably making things hard. Could always try getting in and making a guns kill? 5. I've never been shot at by sparrow online. I would assume the STT lock would let them know you may be going for something other than a slammer. And indeed, the lack of indication that the missile itself is looking at your target could add some kind of element of surprise. But in reality, ARH should have a better pk than SARH. EDIT: I need to say what I mean sometimes
  23. Ok. Are you using radar or EOS? Radar cant lock or keep one in the Russian jets if you're rolled too far to a side. In that close you should be using EOS for targetting, or even better, schlem.
  24. Oh yeah. I got to watch a Talon do a belly-flop at Tinker (from the top of one of the RVR towers, no less!) and it is, indeed a light show. Usually, though, they either dump fuel or fly circles to burn it all off before trying, so that the light show is just from aluminum becoming thermite.
  25. The possibility that part of the aircraft may get a better hold on the ground than another part, and rip itself to pieces. Also, speaking as someone who's been tromping around an airfield before, the ground between all the concrete is anything BUT flat!
