OpenXR Toolkit Tuning Guide (updated 21/02/23)
winghunter replied to edmuss's topic in Virtual Reality
You should note that OXRDT should be re-installed from MS store, especially if people installed an earlier build, as the auto-update doesnt seem to work properly. Several people reported a massive framerate increase after reintalling openXR developer tools.- 688 replies

That looks about the same as my 80% openXR. At least center of the image, as i have FOV rendering applied. Im running 2x MSAA though. Not sure what steamVR does differently with 80% scaling, why it looks better. I have to check further. -

So, after some more testing "latest preview" is not to blame, it gives even better frame rates. However it should be recommnded that people REINSTALL OPENXR DEV TOOLS, especially when they installed them before due to MSFS. Even though i was on the latest version, something wasnt properly updated. After reinstall, the framerate lock is gone and also openXR scaling works. Are you referring to OpenXR Developer Tools ? Have just had the same experience, reinstalling them would improve frame-rate drastically. I also had installed them many month ago due to MSFS and they were "supposedly" updated to latest version. -

I had a feeling that it wasnt caused by a specific aircraft, even though the tomcat is GPU heavy. It wasnt the foveated rendering in XR toolkit either. So i re-installed openXR dev tools, as my render scaling never worked. After reinstall, render scaling now finally works in DCS. Also "use latest preview" is unticked, maybe that caused the issue ? Not sure, have to try with "on". Overall the game is now really smooth even in the 20s to 30s fps range. However it looks considerably worse than with steamVR at 80% (same DCS graphics settings). I dont think the render scaling is calculated equally for steamVR and openXR. 80% in openXR results in 2816x2756, while steamVR claims the same resolution. However, in game there is a noticable introduction of jagged edges and lower pixel density with openXR. Just look at the carrier deck edge in these screenshots. SteamVR 80%: openXR 80%: -

Tomcat on a busy carrier. I have foveated rendering enabled though, maybe thats the bug. Will try without. -

I wonder why framerates get so much worse on my system. Once openXR hits low 20 it doesnt seem want to crawl back up, while steamVR will go happily back up to 45. I dont have the framerates locked in OXR tools. -
Had the G2 for 4 months, since then the Quest2 collected dust. Its better at everything except wireless.

when you get used to it, it works really well. Using head for the big movements and joystick / thumbstick for the small

I have the same experience, scaling on OpenXR tools does nothing to performance. I will try with the OC ini file. -

? Your openvr_api.dll should be in DCS World/bin not in your documents folder Try the OVGME install https://github.com/ColinM9991/open-composite-dcs/releases -

While framerate with 100% SVR is roughly the same as 100% openXR, I get a noticable difference with lower settings: SteamVR 80%: 45 fps - perceieved very smooth OpenXR DevTools 80%: 20 fps - perceived stuttery Since my system isnt good enough to maintain 30fps at 100%, this results in an overall worse experience than with SteamVR. Not sure how that comes to be on my 3070, but somehow scaling render res in openXR doesnt have the same performance benefit -

For me there is no difference in FPS. I also dont see how DCS should render faster in theory, just because theres a different output attached. I think a lot comes down to different frame rate counting methods and averaging. But the tracking seems to have less latency with openXR which appears smoother to me. -
OHHH XD Thanks, it was driving me crazy. Never thought that could be the reason !

Thanks, i dont know how I lost that black mask, maybe due to openXR 0.5. It seems that 0.6 does not cause this issue of the disappearing mask. EDIT: It was caused by MSAA OFF ( XD ) Never thought this would affekt the VR mask in such a way -

could you post an image of your desktop dcs mirror ? thx -
I have completely lost my mask, not sure what happened, I installed and uninstalled the openXR mod. Now the mask area seems to be a rendered scene copy without terrain, rather than a black border.

Is your mask also broken ? Can you post a screenshot of the desktop mirror ? This is costing me some serious frames now, as the scene is rendered twice -

I repaired DCS 100%, and still have no mask on the mirror. I think this mod somehow deletes the VR mask for DCS. Not sure where this mask is defined but i guess its somewhere in SavedGames/DCS settings which isnt repaired. -

After disabling the mod via JSGME I have now this artifact in SteamVR. Looks like the scene is rendered twice, or the hangar is rendered in the background where the black frame should be. Not sure how this could possibly happen, I will try restarting and see if that fixes it. Otherwise repairing game. EDIT: restart didnt help, repairing game.... EDIT: Its caused by MSAA off :0 # normal border: -

noticed the same with the tomcat, there are some distortions around the cockpit frame while steamVR keeps it static. -

EDIT: thermal throttling of my MSI board was to blame, while the board cooled down the frames got back up so i thought it was due to steamVR Thats not what i experience though, steamVR is definitely smoother in the 20-30s fps range. I dont know why that is, my steamVR MR is forced on, while in the SVR WMR overlay settings its set to off.
