I work in the aerospace sector, and its like working in medical emergencies. A Highly stressfull job and I pick the fights more carefully now. :) waiting for DCS 2.0 to go public + new rig soon, so I can return to MP with a clean setup. So, soon now, soon. before anyone aks, yes I will post a thread for the build, it will be something worth seeing.

AMD's boost were didabled too (tested on A320 board). So IPC wise the difference is very small. It rests on how high they can clock. There is no stopping the 7700K but then the sheer difference in cores will be more important as time goes by.

Theres a bit of misinterpretation of some facts here. Ryzen chips of the X series are not locked to any clock speeds. The specs of 3.6 and 4.0GHz speeds are the garanteed minimum ones with the baseline wraith cooler. If you have better cooling it will automatically clock higher and you have to then find the limit by yourself. The mileage will vary depending how cool you can keep it under load. Its IPC seems to be pretty much neck to neck with intel. The only variable will be clock speeds and we should wait for benchmarks to get any idea where they land at. Ryzen Chips should be very good for DCS. Not the best, but pretty good. Where Ryzen will shine brighter though, is multithreaded applications. Im looking at that 1800X myself as DCS is not my only game (I also have Star citizen and thats what Im primarily gunning for).

lol I was not intending to go into another academic discussion. You know what I meant. Besides Im finaly too old and dont care :)

Imagine an F-5 tiger carrying AIM-54's.

and the thing will be carried by Gripens. Ming boggling.

when the missile costs as much as the plane you have to wonder its practicality. :D

I garantee the last pic has less american attendees in it. ;)

we should see alot information one month from now as it gets released. So far all we got is tentalizing performance and pricing rumours. I would guess the accuracy will be around 50%, so not much to go by lol. That being said this is the worst possible time to rush build. You could end getting a bad deal and get sucked to Intels price hike while their dominance lasts.

... if you run Dcs only as the general gaming landscape right now is shifting to 6 cores, in which case a quad core is bad investment.
-
closer to 30% core per core, and the 7700K can clock higher than sandy bridge. in multithreading the difference should be much higher due to having 4 extra logical cores. j7bcjFnLib8

the 512GB models are the sweetspot right now, if you play mostly DCS only. Ill be getting on 1TB 960 Evo with my next build (soon) as I will need that extra space for Star citizen and a few RTS games in addition to DCS (would run quickly out of space with any smaller unit).

Its easy. The I7's internal controller officially support up to 2400Ghz DDR4 dual channel. The other speeds can be selected in BIOS after buying RAMs rated at those speeds. Thats what (OC) means, and you dont necessarily have to overclock the RAM istelf. The choice then comes to price. Most lower tier speeds are priced close to each other until a certain level and thats the sweetspot you should lookout for. Depending on the country and avaiability where you are, as you go up in speed there will be one with a bigger price jump from the previous, and thats where you should stop and buy. It'll probably be 2800 or 3000 RAM, maybe even 3200Mhz. Going 3600Mhz and above offers rapidly diminishing benifits for much higher prices. Timings should be 15-15-15-32 (or -34) ideally, or less (tends to increase the higher the MHz go). Do not take higher than 16-16-16-35.

Monty, wait a few weeks for AMD new Ryzen CPU's and vega GPU's. You will likely be able to get better deals then. Even Intel I5 CPU's have been slowly dragged to premium territory due to lack of competition until now. For what I have been hearing youll be able to get an I7 equivalent on AMD's side for 200$ or less. I know what they say about waiting in the PC world, but this time is worth it. There will be a chance we can get more hardware under the hood for the money. I can think of a better GPU then.

i7/i5 vs gpu and bottlenecking
Pilotasso replied to gavagai's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I also got a 2500K and in search of a replacement. Except I will need multi-threading as DCS is not my only game. So my requirement differential to yours is only the number of logical cores for the CPU. At this time 8GB is not enough, and the speed of DD3 RAM is severely limiting when overclocking the CPU at 4+ GHZ is involved. At this time Intel is overcharging their hardware, even I5's to a premium price due to lack of competition from AMD however if you can wait a month all this will change. AMD is about to release the new RYZEN architecture and rumours have it that will be competitive IPC wise but at lower prices. At this time I would wait a few more weeks until prices are announced but as mentioned you should be able to spend less on CPU+motherboard and more on the GPU. Speaking of which the new AMD VEGA architecture is tailored torwards 4K and shouldnt be too pricey compared to NVIDIA counterparts. The current intel+NVIDIA options are pricey and thechnically limited when you consider what you get for the buck if you want to stay on a sane budget limit. -
Get the EVO, you'll upgrade before the warranty runs out anyway.

its the closest thing to a flying smile like this :D

Test: Setting CPU Affinity
Pilotasso replied to SkateZilla's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Intel made a lot of crap after Sandy Bridge, like cheap TIM and the 6 series was notable for TIM release off from the heat spreader. Before that the spreader was soldered which was far more reliable and had better Temps. These days you need to de-lid Intel cpu's except the premium 6 and 8 cores -
Test: Setting CPU Affinity
Pilotasso replied to SkateZilla's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have a 2500k 1,2 GHz above its stock clock for 6 years. The fear of cpu life is overrated. -
the 970 is still a force to be reckoned with. The I5 is decent, and RAM is pleantiful. The clear weak link is the mechanical hard drive, so: SSD Not only solves load times (that doesnt interest you), it solves stuttering and wait times during gameplay (that should interest you).

System Setup question
Pilotasso replied to iVVChewy9141VVi's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Huh? At this point it becomes evident that you and reality have gone separate ways. :D The difference between stock and overclock is the same between a typewriter and a gaming machine. You should get at least 800mhz more with a K cpu. -
Dedicated DCS World Rig (Anyone)
Pilotasso replied to iVVChewy9141VVi's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
For DCS an I5 will do, and the 7600K is ideal. However if you do any serious gaming beyond it or any productivity work, an I7 might be in order. If your not disgusted by AMD branding you might consider Ryzen 8 core for mostly the same price, even though it should clock lower than intel's you do have extra 8 cores under the hood when you need them in the future. Lots of initial info on all this is droping fast from CES 2017 but we still didnt get the bench and pricing details on the red side. -
difficult choice but I would take the SSD first probably as that has an impact on system responsiveness. You will want a 512 GB model as they are the best for capacity/price ratio right now. You dont absolutely need a new board for overclocking right now as the CPU is recent, maybe when you get more funds months from now, and faster memory as 2133Mhz may not be able to keep up to give the best results. Idealy, 3000Mhz mems, at least 2800.
