Windows 10 quirks and annoyances :S
Pilotasso replied to Pilotasso's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
OK, I ran task manager, terminated each executable at one time, and when I reached the culprit the problem went away. It was NZXT's CAM software FPS overlay. I only want to control the cooler's RGB but the software comes with alot of bloatware. removed cam software from the boot sequence, problem went away. -
Welcome to the hurdles of new PC building (see sig). Only this time the trouble is all on the operating system. I had to go thru uninstalling bloatware (Xbox DVR, telemetry, one drive, unwanted games/apps installed silently etc) But one that I cannot get rid off is this FPS counter that shows up on every game, tried everything (Gforce shadowplay GF experience, even trying older drivers) and nada. Some games wont run on full-screen like Mechwarrior online. Anyone knows how to get rid of the FPS counter??

Yes, and yes. I'm waiting for BIOS updates in order to be able to overclock CPU & RAM more safely. People have reported many horror stories with current beta BIOSes, so Im keeping it very conservative. Graphics card will be a VEGA in a month or two. The GTX 970 is just a placeholder. by that time I expect the R7 pull away even if the increase will be rather modest.

Its benchmark time! OK guys so I ran DCS 2 over nevada. Test setup: Graphics settings used was the HIGH preset @1440P, with Vsync off so that doesnt get FPS capped. I5 System specs: 2500K@4.5Ghz 16GB RAM 1600MHZ CL 11 GTX 970 G1 Gaming stock Windows 7 R7 System specs: R7 1700X@3.5Ghz 16GB RAM @2933Mhz CL14 (I'm keeping the second kit in the box until BIOS updates) GTX 970 G1 Gaming stock windows 10 Here are the results: Mission start: 2500K=68 FPS, R7=71 FPS Over nellis: 2500K=58 FPS, R7=61 FPS Las vegas downtown: 2500K=30FPS, R7=33FPS Las vegas airport: 2500K=43 FPS; R7=41FPS The game reports very low GPU/CPU usage, TBH the results seem pretty much within margin of error. Kinda what I expected to be. Conclusions: ED better harness all this untapped hardware potential as the game optimization is falling behind what hardware can achieve these days. If your upgrading specifically for DCS and already have sandy bridge processors and up, save the money and get more memory, 8 or more GB and an SSD if you already dont have. Everything else is a waste of money. Below I post the screenshots for the timestamps above. The red FPS indication belongs to 2500K, the white FPS indication is R7 on windows 10 (for some reason it stays on on all games and cant get rid of it).

for DCS there is not much to gain from haswell to kaby lake. (for everything else: thats a completely different story) At this point I suspect DCS has been processor maxed out (due to engine, API and CPU tech limitations) and is rather increasingly GPU bound. In order to change this, ED would have to switch to DX12 and place stuff like a beefier flight model, missile, radar modeling and world events on separate cores and then crank the complexity of each thread up for added detail. But that wont happen any time soon.

The DCS test was performed on the 2500K, but not on the R7 yet. I only had time to install the bare minimum last night to get a working machine and install Windows. This morning I installed the RGB fans with controller, it was a headache. Next Ill have my HDD installed, get the case closed (its bare right now), and then I am ready to start testing. Just FYI, I had no trouble bringing 1 kit of memories (2x8GB) to 2933Mhz on the first attempt without issues (didn't push it further yet). Ill get the other kit installed with May's AGESA update. We are not too far from VEGA launch either so that will be another point of interest for this build.

The sun has set on my old 2500K. :bye_3: I am now writing these lines on my new R7 system.:robot: Still missing the HDD, the case fans and cables hanging. I am just setting windows up and programs. I recorded the track and took a few time stamps with FPS. I will compare with this new system as soon as everything is up again.

ahhhh I hit an obstacle already :D The cooler has AM3 bracket for the pump but doesn't come with an AM3 backplate for the motherboard (this is the only board still compatible with old AM3 coolers beyond the new AM4 standard). The dumbest part is that it DOES come with both intel counterparts. GAAAAAAH Have to wake up tomorrow early and head on for the shop, if they dont have a spare AM3 backplate I have to buy a whole separate cooler that comes with an AM3 backplate just to cannibalize it (usually its the other way around!!!).

because new platform teething issues. AMD has been having latency and memory issues with early BIOS. Expect it to gradually match the 7700K as new BIOSes get released (it inst there yet in DX11 but close) 1700X has double the threads for the same price. If it holds on its own with DX11 with a full Ghz disadvantage, then when its firing on all cylinders on DX12 the 7700K will be left in the dust.

Got news this week the Portuguese MOD has recommended the upgrade of the existing F-16AM fleet to V standard as opposed to buying 5th gen aircraft on the basis that the upgrade is 1/10 of the cost. But on the other hand the upgrade will only postpone the purchase of new aircraft by just 10 years. This is just a recommendation, no decisions have been taken yet.

Amazing HUD tape. F-15's VS F4's in 1985. Some radar modes there I have never seen before. bg6qxpVpLqM

FYI Intel is releasing the x299 platform in June for 6-10 cores, you can compare performance and prices then. It's too late for me already as I pulled the plug before this news, but I wanted an 8 core and Intel for sure wont be matching this price to performance ratio anytime soon anyway. It will be an interesting battle between 6 core I7's VS 8 core R7's, and that IMHO is where it should be more interesting to look out for. I will document the build for sure!

I had to settle for the corsair 400C due to ETA to get the other cases (Phanteks P400 or Pro-M). I do have corsair fans ordered (3 RGB 120mm for exhaust plus 2 140mm ML PRO's for the AIO). The rest of the parts are as originally planned (see OP). The parts are only arriving monday, kinda hoped I would spend Easter building. But good things take their time.

Stock fan, Liquid Cooling or Air Heatsink?
Pilotasso replied to Gault05's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
closed water loop. I got an X62 kraken for my Ryzen build (parts will be here monday). The choice is due to: 1)maximum accessibility around the socket and memory area for maintenance and parts swapping. 2)cleaner look overall inside the case 2)quieter due to lower RPM 140mm fans 3)lower CPU temperatures 4)RGB!!!! (yes I'll RGB my cat, dog and parakeet) disavantages: 1)Less reliable in the long term as an aircooler like the NOCTUAs 2)pricier -

TBH I do not think the US navy will be best served like this. They should use the funds to get a dedicated 6th gen replacement out of the door ASAP and stop procrastinating them for more 4th gen ones, or even the F-35 which the navy never wanted. Both Superbug+F35 represent lessons learned that need to be corrected by more efficient designs. The sooner this is done the better, for them.
