  1. In the "bad old days" it was a lot harder to snoop around inside the Alaska ADIZ. Back then NORAD alert birds (F-4s then F-15s) sat alert at Galena (1980-1981 was my tour) and King Salmon AFS. We'd see more TU-16 Badgers and AN-24 Cokes then Tu-95s. They would fly probes to scope out the radar capabilities and intercept procedures & abilities. Every so often, maybe a couple times a month we'd hear "Murphy Dome - ANRACC. Scramble Galena" and the guys would jump in the jets to head out for a closer look. Of course USAF "Ravens" would be (and probably still are) doing much the same thing and we seldom hear about that side of things. :pilotfly: "penetrated US airspace south-west of Alaska" isn't all that difficult to do. For example Eareckson Air Station on Shemya is 200 miles from Russian airspace and 1500 miles from Elmendorf AFB / Anchorage. Maybe things will be more exciting in the near future when F-22s are based at Elmendorf.
  2. A "higher bypass ratio" is of course, relative. In the 1960s the military was using the GE TF39 (later commercial variant was CF6) with a 8:1 bypass ratio on the C-5A. (You know you're onto something good when the NAVY starts dropping TF39s into it's boats!) For the C-17 they're using the P&W F117-PW-100 (military version of the earlier PW2000 used by 767s) with a 5.9:1 bypass ratio. Even the old 707/KC-135 JT3D/TF33 tubofan had a 1.4 bypass ratio. The F-35's Pratt & Whitney F135 engine has a 0.75:1 bypass ratio (CV & STOL versions). The conventional take off and landing (CTOL) version will have a 0.56:1 bypass ratio. F135 Bypass Ratios For comparion: Eurofighter Eurojet EJ220 - 0.4:1 / F-18 GE F404 - 0.34:1 / F-15 & F-15 PW F100 - 0.34:1. As the bypass ratios point out all the fighter aircraft are using low bypass turbofan engines. I think the military & aircraft designers/manufacturers have a good handle on when it makes sense to use high bypass or low bypass (with or without afterburner) turbofan engines.
  3. Confirm they can see can see the mission briefing details and on the Coalition screen they can pick an aircaft? Can they also text chat (Cntrl+M) to each other on the Coalition screen? If they can do that it means the 10308 port forwarding is working OK for TCP packets. As =4c= Hajduk Veljko says both TCP and UDP packets need port forwarding. If your TCP packets are getting through for briefing details, Coalition joining and text chat but the server won't run that likely means the UDP packets arent being forwarded.
  4. Crossfire or SLI it always seems to be that you're better off with 1 more powerful video card than 2 lesser cards in CF/SLI. So if you have $200-250 you're better off getting 1 7900GS or 1 X1950Pro than getting 2x$125 CF/SLI video cards.
  5. Nothing wrong with the DS4. If you have a short list of available motherboards, or the URL of a website where you shop we'll be happy to look over whats available. If they happen to have any Asus P5B-E rev 1.02 (also known as Asus P5B-E Plus) that would also be a good choice.
  6. Ouch!:badmood: E6400 is a good start. Add a Gigabyte 965P-DS3 motherboard and some DDR2 800 or DDR 667 RAM. The 256MB version of the 7950GT would be fine. That should be a very nice bump up in overall performance. The E6400/Gigabyte 965P-DS3 is very good for overclocking - you could have that E6400 running @ X6800 speeds with very little effort. DDR2 is double pumped DDR. While DDR could send 2 data blocks per clock cycle DDR2 handles 4 data blocks per clock. This means higher memory bandwidth but also has the disadvantage of higher latency. If you check the fine print of DDR2 800 you'll find it actually runs at 400Mhz (DDR2 667=333Mhz). DDR latency was in the 2-3 range DDR2 is usually in the 4-5. The bottom line is the RAM won't make as much difference in performance as a good video card or good CPU.
  7. That is all you need to get started. You can get the CD version of both @ http://lockon.co.uk If you can get the CD version of Lock On: Modern Air Combat you can also get Flaming Cliffs as a web download. If you can find a copy of Lock On Gold that version of the game also has Flaming Cliffs included in that package. Just be aware that some of the LO Gold packages have a defective 2nd disk (Flaming Cliffs) that needs to be replaced by the publisher (for free). <-Link A couple of the community support websites for extra missions, aircraft skins and other goodies. http://lockonskins.co.uk/ http://lockonfiles.com/
  8. Welcome back Dice! I'm certain you'll enjoy Flaming Cliffs :joystick: And now we have the hardware available that makes it even more enjoyable than it was back 3+ years ago. And its a bargin at $15 available as a download or on CD. If you can't pry your original LO out of your friends hands let us know. You can still find copies of Lock On or Lock On Gold here and there.
  9. The GUI Configurator thread is in the MODS sub-forum. Last page has the link to the current beta version.
  10. Excellent work! Especially enjoyed seeing more of the BS in-game action than had been available so far.
  11. LOMAC released in the US back on 22nd November 2003. :music_whistling: Thanks to the Guys @ Eagle Dynamics and everyone in the community who helped make this game better.

  13. 6800GT and 800XT run neck and neck The 7600GS seems to run not too far behind.

  16. I think I understand the purpose of that chart and its a great idea - but it's very confusing. And Im not a rookie. Why is there a even "recommended option" for ver 1.01 and ver 1.11? That needs an explaination for sure. Also I don't see any notes on Flaming Cliffs download version vs the CD version using different patches. Can you think of a way to simplify that chart? Maybe just 6 lines - (1)The ideal upgrade path for someone just getting started with ver 1.0 (2)The "history" of all past upgrades to reach ver 1.02. (3)The ideal upgrade path for someone just getting started with Flaming Cliffs (4)The "history" of all past upgrades to reach ver 1.12a. (5)LockOn Gold upgrade path to ver 1.12a (including replacement disk #2) (6)BlackShark upgrade path. Of course all the rookies will be using the "ideal upgrade path". They don't need to bother with interim patches like 1.01 and 1.11/1.12. Is there another chart that will help a rookie figure out which version he actually has? That question comes up fairly often such as when someone says he has version 1.2 when he really means 1.02. It will only get worse when there actually IS a ver 1.2. :joystick: Maybe a 2nd chart with pictures something like this forum post would be a good idea.
  17. I had some previous good experiances with the Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit so I wasn't too worried about giving it a shot. I've been really happy with this mod. Also the whole Silent Hunter III Community Manual is a great asset. The Lock On community could really use something similar.
  18. Get the SH3 widescreen mod here: http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Display_Resolution
  19. Don't give up on your favorite games. You can see a list of games that support widescreen (with any tweaks, hacks or mods to get them to run that way) on sites like WideScreenGamingForum or TigerDave forum If you just can't live with that game that only runs 1024x768 (I still have one) you can always run older games in a window on the bigger monitor. Yes the big black areas are slightly annoying but you should be able to ignore that after a minute or two.
  20. If you have the free GoogleEarth software on your PC that type of .kml file will load up GoogleEarth and fly you to that area for a closer look. :clap_2: GoogleEarth program here: http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html Get the version 4 beta - Program hint: Move mouse cursor to top right to get the controls to zoom, etc.
  21. ATI Radeon 9600 XT 256mb - which video driver (CAT) are you using?
  22. A few others: http://www.putfile.com/ 2MB images 25MB videos. Need to register. http://www.imagevenue.com/ 1.5MB images http://freefilehosting.net/ 3MB files of any type (for track or mission files)
  23. Just go into the game, use the NTWK option from the main menu and then choose your 128 settings and use the START button. That should recreate the file for you. "This file was automagically generated" C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Eagle Dynamics\Lock On\Config\network file name: config.lua
