  1. Is someone planning on doing some overclocking? :crash: Be sure to get the ASUS P5N32-SLI SE motherboard. (The P5N32-SLI Deluxe (without SE) doesnt support Conroes.) There might some issues with P5N32-SLI and OCZ: OCZ Forum I havent seen anything to indicate the 7950GX2 gives any performance gain over 7900GTX.
  2. Good find! Thanks for the links. Extra information about the wheels up landing of the Hawker X800. Part of the right wing was missing, and an engine was blown out. A piece of the glider was sticking out of the front windshield. The mid-air collision knocked the cockpit instruments out of the panel and nearly into the lap of the pilot, said Steve Lewis, owner of Sterling Air. He said the plane skid on its belly for about 3,000 feet.
  3. Video of the May 2005 SU-33 loss while landing on the Admiral Kuznetsov. http://shock.military.com/Shock/videos.do?displayContent=107339&page=1
  4. Glider pilot, 58-year-old Hirao Akihiro, survives a mid-air collision with a jet aircraft. News story: http://www.nbc4.tv/news/9757439/detail.html
  5. I did write "cleared to takeoff from runway 26" but in actual fact the tower did clear them to takeoff from the correct runway - 22. The CVR did catch the takeoff clearance and read back for the correct runway. It's likely he gave the takeoff clearance while the CRJ was still taxing. With just a single controller in the tower its entirely possible he was busy with other duties and didnt watch for, or expect, the pilots to have any problems getting to the right runway just as the 2 previous departures had done that morning. I saw where the FAA has added a 2nd controller to the tower shift. I'm sure they'll be looking over staffing at dozens of similar sized airfields in the weeks ahead. It seems easy to say "crew error" but as always seems to be the case the more important question(s) will be what factors led up to the point where the crew could not recover from an error in judgement. Just this afternoon a Hawker 800 jet had to make an emergency wheels up landing at Carson City, NV after colliding with a GLIDER at 16,000 while descending toward Reno, NV airport. The Hawker has pieces of the glider embedded in the nose. They still haven't found the glider or its occupant(s). Will be interesting to see what report the investigators will make out of that accident. Also today a SR-22 crash landed into a pond after the aircraft parachute deployed. The pilot may have had a heart attack while airborne and later died at a hospital. The other 3 passengers survived.
  6. The aircraft was cleared to takeoff from runway 26 @ 6:05am by the single tower controller. Two previous flights had already departed that morning. There was light rain or drizzle at the airport. Possible visibility and/or runway braking limitations. The taxi route to the active runway changed last week. Runway 22 high intensity edge lighting was out - runway 26 is unlighted.
  7. It's fairly easy to run both versions of Lock On on your PC. http://forum.lockon.ru/showthread.php?t=7361 Just copy the whole ver 1.02 folder into another location. Then do a fresh 1.0 install, add the 1.1 Flaming Cliffs add-on, add the 1.12 patch. Now when you want to fly the 1.02 version use the Lockon.bat file (located in your 1.02 folder) If you want to change the ICON on the lockon.bat file use the Right Mouse click menu, use PROPERTIES and you'll see the CHANGE ICON option. The Icon is located in the Lockon.exe file. To change versions in Ubi.com use the Lockon Lobby OPTIONS menu. (you have to be in the lobby to be able to change versions) To change versions in HyperLobby. Disconnect from HL. (click on the button just left of Player Lists to bring up the HL options menu. The Connect option will disconnect also). Then hold down the Shift+Cntrl keys and use the CONNECT button again. That will bring up the dialog box that will let you navigate to the version of the game you want to use. :joystick: When Black Shark is released quite a few of us may have 3 different versions of Lockon installed: 1.02, 1.12a and 1.2
  8. can we see a screenshot from the Performance Tab of Task Manager? In the Physical Memory box add the Total and System cache. Does that add up to your 964K? My Task Manager shows 332M/4819M
  9. Its looking like maybe the aircraft took off on the wrong runway - 26 instead of the usual 22. One news report I heard made it sound like the aircraft was damaged somehow trying to take off on the too short runway.
  10. It is not a bug. After you have hit the pre-planned targets loaded into the mission the "next target" steering cues arent available. It's a feature of how the missions are built. The mission planner can decided how many "targets" to pre-load into the NAV system. You then have to hunt up the remaining targets of oppourtunity using either the map option, or by finding the targets using your eyeballs. Which mission are you having problems with? Did you read the mission briefing? Did you study the mission map? Naming the mission you flew will let us look at the mission to better understand what you are talking about.
  11. BUKs and HAWKs are not a problem. Even when protected by ZSU-23, Igla and Strela. Fly inbound at 20K or so till you get launch indication. Evade the missile(s). Repeat till the BUK/HAWK sites are out of missiles and then press the attack.
  12. Well said. Yes - the tutorials are important. And so is the manual. It's important to lead new recruits to what they need to succeed. For example: The tutorial tracks are an excellent start. But lets remember to drop that little hint that to get the maximum out of the training tracks a new user should probably "roll-back" to version 1.1 to get the tracks to play right. Use the UNINSTALL utility located in the main Lock On folder: Thats where you have the option to rollback to the vanilla 1.1 version. Handy tips and tricks (like Ironhand points out) shorten the initial learning curve hump for someone just getting started. Quality advice. It's also worth pointing out that the "quality" of the navigation part of a mission is really enhanced by carefully studying the mission briefing and mission map prior to flight. Use of the mission map (F10) and the ability to zoom the map view is also a handy aid to navigation and isnt necessarily a cheat. "Real pilots" :pilotfly: do carry maps and carry paper flight plans with the navigation data. Some of us have even printed out maps to hang near the monitor.
  13. The Firing Squad website is using Lock On to benchmark the newest ATI graphics card. (The reviews also used the new Conroe X6800 CPU.) The most interesting part of the review for me was the chart of Min/Max FPS. For a long time I've felt it was just as important (if not MORE important) to watch the MIN FPS values rather than Average or Max FPS. Even so I was really suprised to see the ATI cards MIN FPS scores were consistently so much lower than the nVidia cards. Firingsquad.com Radeon_X1950_XTX review Firingsquad.com Radeon_X1900_XT review
  14. You can get a JS profile from the Logitech website @-->Support->Downloads -> Joysticks -> Logitech® Attack™ 3 Joystick. But you do need to set JS axis through the LO Options -> Input menu. Check the LO FC Quick Start Manual 1.1.pdf file on pages 14-16 to find out how to set the Axis programming.
  15. Sound card change all by itself did not cause a re-activation for me. A friend upgraded his memory from 512MB to 1GB and did not have to re-activate. No problem adding new peripherals such as new JS, TrackIR, etc. However, if you were to upgrade memory AND change sound cards the SF checker MIGHT trigger a re-activation. Some have suggested (but not tested) the theory that if you only make one change (such as sound cards) and then run LO for a couple weeks and then make another change (such as adding memory) that SF would allow that. Personally I'd go ask that specific question in the SF forum before I ever tried that theory. You should probably go read the SF forum and ask your questions there. Im sure you know the best thing to do is make ALL your hardware upgrades, get it running stable, before you start up LO again. The list you have of hardware changes is sure to trigger a re-activation. So far I havent needed to use any re-activations. Like a lot of others I plan on upgrading just before BlackShark is released. The good news is that we should all get another fresh group of re-activations when we get BS.
  16. It would be nice to believe that were true. How ever its equally possible they could be "furiously testing something thats broken" Or they're in overdrive trying to get things done on other revenue projects. (i.e., TBS) As for "release info when they have time to" it could very well be "release info when they actually have some new info to release" instead. It seems over the last 3 months or so we've heard/seen more info on The Battle Simulator (TBS) than we have on Black Shark. Or have I been missing some BS news?
  17. Pretty impressive! Getting a budget (overclocked) CPU to outperform the FX-62, FX-57, and EE965 (even when they are overclocked) is something special. Lockon Core 2 Performance with GeForce/SLI from www.firingsquad.com 11 Aug Article
  18. Usually, Port Forwarding and DMZ are mutually exclusive. You can use one or the other, but not both at the same time. DMZ puts your PC's ports "outside" the router firewall. Port Forwarding tells the router to send all "traffic" inbound to a specific port (10308) to a specific PC on your private LAN (192.168.2.8). For LockOn you need to have BOTH TCP and UDP port forwarded. Use the ALL INTERFACES option. Does your private LAN use Static IPs or DHCP (dynamic IP assignment by the router)? DHCP and Port Forwarding can be in issue for some routers. Static Private IPs and Port Forwarding seem to work better. You can usually find detailed instructions on how to set up your specific router if you google your router model name together with port forwarding. Example: http://www.dslwebserver.com/main/fr_index.html?/main/sbs-linksys-port-forwarding.html Also the hardware forums at http://www.broadbandreports.com is a good resource. http://www.dslreports.com/forums/all?cat=6
  19. Of course "they" are going to say its pilot error. :pilotfly: Who is going to want to buy an aircraft with systems problems?
  20. Don't forget that AMD is still on 90 nanometer die process and Intel is now on 65nm. It will be interesting to see how well the AMD 65nm CPUs match up against the Intel 65nm CPUs when the AMDs start showing up in the first half of '07.
  21. I've seen overclocking reviews show 3.4Ghz on the stock HSF and up around 4Ghz with a good aftermarket HSF. That includes the E6600 (2.4GHz) overclocking to ~3.4Ghz stock and near 4Ghz with a better HSF. Pretty impressive for a $316 CPU - it matches up well against the more expensive E6700 and the much more expensive X6800.
  22. After taking a closer look at the [H]ardOCP article along with a few other articles at other sites I think the point [H]ardOcp is trying to make is that in most "bleeding edge" games its possible to turn up the graphics options and effects so that the GPU (not the CPU) then becomes the limiting factor. I think thats [H]ardOCP's take on how the average gamer plays his games - maxed out as far as possible and still have playable frame rates. Needless to say there are wide differences in how testing and reviews take place - let alone the results. I DID notice in the [H]ardOCP results table that the CoreDuo CPUs had HDR Enabled Shadows at 5th Slider notch but the FX-62 CPU had HDR Enabled Shadows at 3rd Slider notch Another review of CoreDuo game play using Oblivion (and hand run - not canned time demos [H]ardOCP was complaining about) showed these results. No one expects people to run out and get a new system (AMD or Intel) for just a few extra FPS. But Im sure those of us in the market for our next new system will be watching closely to see how this all shakes out in the next couple of months. It's looking like a win-win situation for at the moment no matter which type CPU you end up going with.
  23. Considering the price difference between the X6800 and E6700 I can see why SimHQ gives the E6700 the higher rating. -> Core 2 Duo E6700 score: 9.6 -> Core 2 Extreme X6800 score: 9.1 What really got my attention was that the E6700 posted 78fps @ 800x600 and 74fps@ 1600x1200! Same narrow band for the X6800 - 81fps @ 800x600 and 75fps@ 1600x1200! Based on that I'm most curious about knowing if the Core2's improve the MINIMUM FPS at all. I'd gladly sacrifice some top end FPS to gain better minimum FPS. Good read. Looking forward to more reviews in the next couple weeks. Thanks for digging out the SimHQ article for us.
  24. As HV says big price drop in AMD CPUs coming in July. From article @ http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2800 Also your DDR2 RAM should be DDRII 800 (or better) and low latency if you can afford it.
