  1. The Mi-28N has the same "multi-crew" issue that's hard to solve. How do you combine the crew responsiblities split between 2 crew into a player's single control span? I know some "sims" let you jump between crew positions but that doesnt seem a workable solution for rapid moving combat action. Still it we can "humancockpit" mini-mod the -28 to get some extra fun into the game I'd be happy for that option.
  2. Locked threads seem to attract "extra" attention. We all want to know what caused them to get locked! My primary intent was to show that there exists an upgrade path to Vista compatability. As evidenced by currently released games using SF that do run under the Vista Betas. I'd not want to read too much into Dmut's post in the last (locked) topic but its the closest yet to anyone on the ED Team hinting FC doesnt run on the Vista Betas. Due to the way MS Vista development is handling Legacy games it might be a good idea to have the FC Vista Patch out well before Vista Launch (as early as possible) so that a Unique LockOn "game defination file" makes it into Vista's "GameExplorer" via the Application Compatibility tool. Those "game defination files" are helped along by Beta Testers who give feedback to the Vista Dev team. So having Flaming Cliffs running early on Vista Beta's can only be a good thing. Hopefully this won't apply to Black Shark because ED makes BS a "Vista Supported" game that does all the setup-related work to add itself to the Game Explorer with it's own Game Defination File.
  3. There are at least several versions of SF protected games out there that run OK. X3 Reunion and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory for example. Probably there are others. The SF company forum says this about SF/Vista compatibility: FWIW; About a week ago I visited the same SF forum post and found a different reply than the one you see above. To the best of my memory, in somewhat fractured Russlish, they said certain early versions of SF would not work with Vista but that more recent versions (3.4 and above if memory serves) would work. The post also said that many games would need to be installed by the administrator account, and use the "XP Compatibility" setting that Vista will have. It's interesting to note that the updated text there now still has the date/time group of the original post. Maybe "they" thought we wouldnt notice the change. I'm not clear which version of SF is used in LO/FC so it's not clear if FC will run on Vista with just a Driver update or, as mentioned, it will take a patch to ensure compatability. Still - it would be nice if ED would confirm if FC will run on Vista Betas with the updated driver SF makes available on it's website. :music_whistling: Hopefully, BlackShark will be using the latest version of the SF SDK and so be Vista-ble right out of the gate. The issue of Ring-0 drivers for SF really isnt different from other software that use Ring-0 drivers - which is almost all Anti-virus and Firewall programs that provide "active monitoring" for example. On a side note the SF website says the latest version of SF protection has achieved the "Designed for Windows XP" certification. Hopefully they'll be able to make the same claim for the Vista version.
  4. The only thing that comes to mind is that it might be the actual power switch on the case. If that failed it might explain why a known good power source can't be switched on.
  5. Tour de Force! Votre grenouille a mangé mon dejeuner! Almost bust a gut laughing when Bensky got his "ride" hit by a tagger! MSN Messenger - & - Tic-Tac-Toe taken to a whole 'Nother Level!!! Bravo Dobberman
  6. Getting any "beep codes" during the power on attempt? What motherboard are you using? Some have LED indicators that might help narrow down problem.
  7. Vista ... and its looking like 2007 and probably a rollout to the corporate networks first.
  8. I bet you could get Lockonfiles.com or Lockonskins.co.uk or even FlankerTraining.com to help host your tutorial. Other wise your http://dpsflight.com/ website will be outta bandwidth in No Time
  9. Very nice Tutorial. Best example yet of Close Air Support work with a JTAC (Joint Terminal Attack Controller)! (JTAC formerly known as FAC - Forward Air Controller) Excellent 9Line CAS briefing from Zipper-11. And of course outstanding airmanship in the attack. About the only thing missing was your INFLTRPT (In Flight Report) following the attack. :music_whistling: OKay; maybe Zipper-11 didnt give you the "Cleared Hot" notice and you called "Maverick" instead of "Rifle" when you launched on the ZSU-23 but thats just niggley-picking over minor details. Seriously though.... well done! REP inbound. For any one curious as to how close DPS came to the "real thang" you can check through the Joint Tactics, Techniques and Procedures for Close Air Support in Joint Pub 3_09_3 available online in PDF format http://www.dtic.mil/doctrine/jel/new_pubs/jp3_09_3ch1.pdf :pilotfly: Skip ahead to Chapter V: Execution page 121 though (unless you're a masochist for military jargon and procedure)
  10. Very Nice Art (flying AND screenshots) !!
  11. Your new AM2 list looks pretty awesome. And it doesnt bust your budget - even better. better speed wise? maybe; but the peformance of FX62 (2.8ghz) is not 40% better than the 5000+ (2.6ghz) as the price might lead you to believe. Maybe 10-15%. 939 FX60 vs AM2 FX62 performance could be fairly close based on early results seen in pre-production testing. From an article @ http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/amd-socket-am2.html better upgradability? Absolutely - future proofed! You'll have future CPU choices later on as AMD starts to turn out 65nm AM2 CPUs next year. compatibility with LOFC? Unknown territory as of yet. I havent seen any head-to-head comparisons with AM2 FX62 and a similar priced Intel Conroe yet. It appears the consensus is that Intel can win back the performance crown (at least for a while) later this summer. With LOBS pushed back a bit and some of the biggest changes to CPU and Motherboard taking place this summer it seems a wait and see position maybe warranted. (But if that money is burning a hole in your pocket - that AM2 package still looks pretty sweet)
  12. If you have a budget target in mind mention that. It will focus some best-bang-for-the buck vs. 2nd mortgage type system suggestions.
  13. 1974-1998 retired SMSgt. 14 years in Command Post/Combat Plans (274/1C3) and 10 years in Logistics Plans (661/2G0). Best assignment: Either Hickam AFB Hawaii 1974-1978 or RAF Fairford, UK 1993-1995 Most interesting assignment: Galena Combat Alert Center, Galena Airport, AK 1980-81 "Top Cover for America"
  14. Try hosting the high quality version on the Rapidshare website: http://rapidshare.de/
  15. Nice example to team tactics and team comms.
  16. Most drones DO have a cockpit-type setup (in the ground control station). It's usually a pilot-operator and a sensor-operator - either on the ground back at the operating base, a forward C3I location or sometimes in an aircraft operating near the area of interest. ED would need a LOT of detail to create the ground station & systems part of the Predator UAV. After all what would be the point of "flying" the UAV if you couldnt somehow get the sensor data into the game? I suspect the Predator would be similiar to existing AI helicopters - available for adding "atmosphere" or as as extra "targets" for the pilot-players.
  17. Great find Curli  Thanks for digging that out for us!
  18. It's hard to tell there is any crosswind in that video. Check the "Landing XviD.avi' in the Lock On/Movie folder for a good example of crosswind landing techniques.
  19. There are reviews on the new XPS laptop at http://anandtech.com/ http://www.tomshardware.com/index.html and cNet http://reviews.cnet.com/Dell_XPS_M1710/4505-3121_7-31789682.html
  20. I just noticed that the http://www.firingsquad.com/ website has started using Lock On for benchmarking again. :icon_jook If might be a good idea if a few of you also drop them a note saying you're pleased to see Lock On back in the benchmarking business.
  21. Can that be right? 26a x 12v = 312 watts I think the top video cards ATI/Nvidia pull around 100 watts or so, right? Found the reference for the 7900 GTX about 85 watts peak load. Also found this info: Note that the new card consumes the largest share, about 45W, from the PCI Express x16 slot and only about 36W from the external power line. The remaining 3W are consumed from the +3.3V line. For comparison, the Radeon X1900 XTX is almost the same load on the graphical slot, but it sucks in as much as 72W from the external +12V line! Thus, though an elite graphics card, the Nvidia GeForce 7900 GTX has a very modest appetite and doesn’t require a high-wattage power supply even if you are going to put two such cards into your system case. A good-quality 400-450W PSU will be quite enough. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/geforce7900gtx_6.html edit: OK..... looks like I may have to change the websites I use for reference: AnandTech shows this chart: 271 watts divided by 12 volts gets you 22.5 amps.

  23. PC3200 DDR RAM is 184 pin package vs DDR2 240 pin package. AMD systems wont be using DDR2 until the AM2 boards roll out later this year. The RAM you have listed is ECC Registered CAS Latency 3. You can get lower CAS 2 latency RAM (non-ECC): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145019 If you're getting the Zalman watercooler for over-clocking adventures be sure to look into a NorthBridge cooler, and maybe a cooling solution for your RAM. Ok - just realized that DFI MB has a stock NorthBridge cooler. Maybe a couple RAM heat spreaders and make sure they get good airflow through the case fans.
