opinions on these hardware choices
Mk1_Trebuchet replied to SalakauHeadman's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I'll save myself a lot of typing and just agree wholeheartedly with LucShep's assessment. I'll just add that if you are not planning on building it yourself, be sure to choose a company that has a history of standing behind their products. (If you're paying a premium to have some do the work, make sure they will stand behind it). -
Same as Roosterfeet here. If I close my eyes and recenter on what feels like a neutral position, the 'view' looks off to the right just a bit. I just split the difference and turn my head a bit and recenter. Never really gave it a second thought, been that way with all 3 of the headsets I've owned over the years.

Slowing down the thumb stick
Mk1_Trebuchet replied to VR Flight Guy in PJ Pants's topic in Input Devices
Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but below is the curve I use on my "Radar Cursor" axis on the F16 (for the cursor on the MFD's - TGP, Mavs, Etc) It produces fine control near the center of the stick, but fast movement if you go to the extents of the stick. -
A whole new rig building question for DCS
Mk1_Trebuchet replied to Vnavspeed's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Here to add to the recommendations for a 9800x3d in a gaming rig. I had a 14900K and built a new system with the AMD just for gaming. (the 14900k is now a dedicated CAD workstation) I run VR with a 4090 and typically ran around 90fps (Refresh rate of the Varjo Aero) with some dips to the high 80's. Jumping to the 9800x3d didn't 'boost' my fps, but now the fps is super stable at 90fps with no dips. Guess that Vcache is doing its thing. -
Great Job on those!!! For panel making, a 0.2 nozzle on that X1C will change everything. (Sure, it takes 2.5 times longer to print, but the results are far superior to the 0.4) Ironing never gave me acceptable results. It works fine on small parts, but large flat areas end up looking more striated than without ironing. Edit - The Garmin is a WIP and shows "Face Down" printing with the 0.2 nozzle. null

Server Firewall stalling?
Mk1_Trebuchet replied to Mk1_Trebuchet's topic in Multiplayer Server Administration
Turns out that a complete uninstall and re-install of the server cleared it up. A slow repair didn't have any effect, but completely clearing out the file structures and installing DCS fresh did the trick.... Never touched the port forwarding or router/firewall. -
Server Firewall stalling?
Mk1_Trebuchet replied to Mk1_Trebuchet's topic in Multiplayer Server Administration
Update: The DCS Server runs for exactly 20 minutes before it stops listening on external 10308... but I can still connect from within the LAN (All Firewalls and security turned off) Restarting the DCS server resets the clock. -
Since the last update my dedicated server will run for a while, but then the windows firewall seems to close the port (10308) or at least it becomes unresponsive from outside. (via CanYouSeeMe) Restarting the DCS server fixes it for a time, but it still 'shuts down' after a while. I've verified the Windows services are still running and there is nothing of note in the event viewer. The server seems to be running, and I can connect to it from inside the LAN..... Been running this server for about a year, this issue only started on the last DCS update. Anyone have any thoughts?

DCS disk space / compression questions
Mk1_Trebuchet replied to Hammer1-1's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
The heatsink can come off, and they sell a version without one. But some kind of cooling is going to be required. It's not likely to self immolate, but going without will shorten its lifespan. Removing the heatsink involves (carefully) removing the factory adhesives. So if you're uncomfortable with potentially destroying the PCB, stick to the version without the HS. -
Pilot eye direction in mirrors not realistic.
Mk1_Trebuchet replied to P3CFE's topic in DCS: F-4E Phantom
I'll take .5% performance boost or 1% more efficient code over directed eye movement thank you. I mean really, that ask is a niche within a niche.... I've been turning them off anyway since you can't point them up to where you can actually see anything behind you, the only thing they are currently good for is checking your lip muppet. -
I'm also looking for an update. The last 'official' thing I heard was that there was a bug in it, and it would be released 'soon' (That was just after launch) thanks!

I'm pretty new to Livery creation and learning as I go.... I've found a strange issue that I can't figure out. The external skins work just fine, but from the First person view (in VR) the canopy skin is missing. I don't see any references to internal textures in the description file, so it must be a derivative of the "F16_bl50_Main_1" file... but I can't figure out why it would work in one view and not another... thoughts? extra credit if you get the reference null

Used an HF8 for a while to test the waters of haptics. Worked well enough to convince me that I'll never play without haptics again - Especially as one who exclusively uses VR. I Ended up moving to a buttkicker (better IMHO) due to the discomfort from sitting on the pucks embedded in the seat after a long flight.

Thanks! That didn't come up when I searched. Gonna pin that one!

Probably a dumb question... but how do I get Kola installed on my dedicated server? Is this another Sinai scenario that requires a command line push?

The options for zoom in VR are limited to "VR Zoom" and "VR Spyglass zoom". Neither work like the zoom functions in pancake. I recall there being a way to modify the zoom level in a LUA file somewhere, but don't recall the details. (I've just accepted and adjusted to it)

Generally speaking they'll show 'pre-order' for items that aren't in 'local' stock. If you look at the international store, it may be in stock and ready to ship from there.... The US store gets restocked in bulk shipments. In my experience, it's a crapshoot whether or not you'll get your order sooner or later than waiting for the US site to show as 'in stock'. My orders that have shipped directly from Shenzhen have taken anywhere between 1 and 3 weeks to the east coast.

Starting with VR - Checking my understanding
Mk1_Trebuchet replied to FZ1FZ1's topic in Virtual Reality
You feel like you're finding conflicting information because you probably are.... sort of. Always check the date on info posts, the whole VR thing is moving so fast that changes to hardware and software are practically constant. But just beware, once you're set in VR it's really hard to go back. -
Having mostly Winwing controls in my current configuration, I'm looking for opinions on alternatives. While I have had no serious mechanical or software issues with the gear, the last several interactions I've had with the company have ranged between off-putting and wildly maddening. So I'm considering divesting myself of their gear and refitting the simpit. My read on Winwing at this point: The gear is good/great, so long as you NEVER have to interact with them. Thoughts or opinions on alternatives that... 1. Offer good customer service 2. similar (or better) quality 3. offer customization options 4. have solid, mature drivers/software Budget is not the defining factor here. It is always a factor, but quality and customer service mean more to me at this point in my life. thanks!

Thinking of building a new rig. Need advice.
Mk1_Trebuchet replied to frostycab's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
@frostycab Overkill? Maybe. It depends on how you look at it. You're jumping 5 generations of CPU and a few generations of GPU. My (Gaming PC) philosophy has always been to go as top of the line as I can, and ride it as long as is comfortable. (But that's just me) Interoperability isn't really as much of a thing anymore. So long as the components are architecturally compatible (Check the Mfg specs) you should be fine. The "Silicon lottery" is still a thing, but if you're not planning on deep tuning or overclocking, you'll probably never notice one way or another. Clarification: The CPU/Memory/Motherboard Trinity is where you'll see compatibility constraints (Mfg specs) - GPU, Drives, etc are pretty much a non-factor these days. -

Beast of a build sheet. Go big, or go home. I love it. Overclocking will not be required... for a little while at least. Cases are so much personal taste, but for my latest rig, I went with the Corsair 7000D. It is a MONSTER of a case, but more than enough room for anything you want to put in it - And GREAT airflow. But I reiterate... It. Is. HUGE. I'm currently using an Artic Liquid Freezer II 420 and have no complaints. For case fans, I've been using 'Be Quiet!' Silent Wings 4 (140mm) - Nice and quiet and good flow on low speeds. -
For me, No... all by touch/muscle memory. I'm currently using a pair of Cougar MFDs and a 4x8 streamdeck programmed as the ICP. I have Braille keyboard markers on specific keys and an image of the mapping on a kneeboard page if I forget. (But at this point, I never really reference it anymore).

Honestly, As an exclusively VR player, I've been eyeing a 'Phoenix MIP' for quite some time. But since I don't spend nearly as much stick time in the Hornet as I do in the Viper, I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger. Having a QUICK change ICP/UFC... well... I'll be watching the WW webstore like a hawk...
