  1. loads of fun Yellownet I agree that the BS is limited without rwr. Well maybe limited is the wrong term. "Vulnerable" comes to mind. Makes you wonder what the Kamov designers were thinking. Fun missions in a modern battlefield will probably have a high pucker factor. I'm having trouble seeing the gunship in less than battlefield deployment. Anyone got any ideas on an anti-insurgent mission scenario? Need a little help with that vision. Flyby out
  2. hey there Yellownet... you mean the SEAD strike won't elimintate all radar-guided missile threats? :( what's the use of being a Black Shark pilot if you can't depend on others in a combined-arms strike to pave the way. Might as well change the chopper's name from Black Shark to Kamov Ka50-Kamikaze, then save fuel and weight by designing it only for one-way missions. Oh the horror! The horror! BTW, anyone know how much a Black Shark costs in r/l? (the irrascible) Flyby out
  3. so maybe...? Assuming you are correct, cold conflicts may mean battling insurgents. Is DCS_Black Shark able to simulate a war against insurgents? Also, in a full scale war scenario, the Black Shark might be able to play a supply interdiction role. Correct? But then again, hitting enemy supplies suggests surviving in enemy territory. That might be an odd mission: * set up local air superiority in enemy air space * send in air assets to perform SEAD * send in the Black Sharks to deal with the supply depots (then hustle out of there under the air umbrella. Simply, eh?;) Flyby out
  4. I'm getting older Hey GGT, I'm content to wait for the release of BS. I just hope it's out before I start collecting a pension! :D Well, don't laugh too loudly. I turned 58 this past February! Flyby out
  5. hold on a minit This whole Vikhr thing is sounding like a bummer to me. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but it seems as if it's best to leave the M1 to the big dogs whom/whatever they may be. I'll just have to make sure that my COOPs an single missions have adequate oomph! to take on such targets (or maybe just take care of the M1's supply lines like fuel bowsers, etc, and leave them high and dry and sitting ducks). I'll think of sumptin. :D Flyby out
  6. guys, I never mentioned a campaign. I'm talking about a COOP mission, or at least a single mission. If you don't win in a COOP or a good single mission it doesn't automatically follow that you (repeatedly) die. Who said that? Also, I think if the outcome is not a sure thing, that adds a bit of "tension" to it, which I find is an attractive quality that adds a bit more immersion and suspension of disbelief. I don't think knowing the outcome is more realistic either. I don't see the reason in that statement. Don't misunderstand me. I'm not dogging anyone who wants to fly offline or online campaigns that are win-able. There are no rules enforcing how easy or hard or deadly a campaign needs to be. Same with COOPs and single missions. I was only stating my preference. If I make 'em good enough to suit me, hopefully one will never look at any COOP or single mission with my name on it as a sure thing, piece of cake, walk in the part, etc. Rather it would be seen as fun! Maybe I'll even get a request for a "do-over "! :D Variety is the spice of life. Flyby out
  7. interesting point, brat Upon reflection, I tend to agree. LOMAC has always been defined as cpu-bound. IL2 was similarly defined. I suppose FSX is too. Oddly not too many new cpus are burning up the skies with ghz of power, but at least a few can be safely overclocked to 3.6 with air cooling. The e8400 and e8500 come to mind. I don't think LOMAC and Black Shark are so much about how many cpu cores (but at least two, so one core can handle the background stuff) as it is about ghz which I think translates into bandwidth. 8. I can only imagine the legions of online players looking for coop missions where due diligenceis at the highest level. But how can a gunship pilot defend against a stinger team while attacking such a brigade? I can only guess that the gundhip attacks would have to be made at long range. But knowing me, I would not let it be that easy. Terrain would spoil the long range shot, but it might also mask the attacker! ;) Imagine the pucker factor of being within range of return fire, or possible Stingers and having to hold lock on your target! :D But wiat. Don't Stingers have a range of about 8 miles?
  9. I'm the least to judge a video since I can't make one. But I know what I like, and I liked this one!
  10. Doh! If you're right, qrazi, then I hope ATi and Nvidia are aware of DCS, and Black Shark! Wouldn't that be great?
  11. Copy that. Here's to a robust Mission editor! I imagine having a flank screen is something the mission builder will have to include? I like a tough mission where the outcome is never a sure thing. Why build a mission where you know you're going to win?
  12. Not being well versed in Russian equipment, I'll take a "wag" and say that perhaps a mission builder might employ a squadron of Su25T (ai) to engage the M1s then send in the Black Shark to take out softer targets. This scenario of course is one where the tanks are caught enroute.
  13. hey guys, I didn't mean to give the impression of a lone BS attacking a heavy brigade. Not at all. But I was curious about the Vikhr's punch from a mission-making point of view. Since it does not perform a pop-up manuever I wanted to know how much good it would do against an M1. I guess I sort of wonder how a flight of Ka50s would do in slowing down a heavy brigade. My mission-making interests tend to lean towards going up againt Western equipment, not fighting insurgents in cities, and such. You know me. If I don't ask...;) Flyby out
  14. to correct myself, the Soyo monitor is actually a 26 inch model. see the review here: http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=191&Itemid=1 the price aint bad at all. me
  15. no joy can you Youtube it? thanks! Flyby out
  16. yet another take on PhysX and CUDA Found this over at Extreme Tech. It's an article about why ATI won't buy into PhysX and CUDA: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2324555,00.asp Also, I read oevr at GPU Review that NVIdia is droppping the price of the GTX 280 (yeah the 280) to $499.00 USD. That's about the same price as the 4870X2 is said to cost. But the latter card is hyped as being able to crush the '280. We'll see. I've read the 4870X2 will have 2bg of gddr5 ram, tweaked for higher bandwidth than the standard speed on the single gpu 4870. Now that would be CRUSHING! On another note, I saw somewhere that Soyo is offering a 30 inch monitor that runs in native rez of 1900xwhatever instead of the standard 2500x1600 rex of the average 30 inch monitor. Refresh rate is said to be 2ms gtg. I know; in God we trust, all others bring data. :D Flyby out
  17. good luck with that, Fodder! Flyby out
  18. thanks for the replies, guys. I read somewheer that the 4870X2 will have it's memory speed tweaked so that it will be faster than 2 4870s in crossfire mode. I'm just vascillating between going Crossfire or not, and so the 4870X2 looks good for a single card solution. @ $500.00 it will severely test the Nvidia gtx280 which will drop to $500.00 soon too. I don't know this for a fact, but I think the 4870X2 will be a bargain comapred to the '280, and faster too. But it's just all too much to take in and decide on. I'd like to save a few bucks somewhere on my new system, but it seems crazy to not go with an X38 chipset for the erventual price drop of the 4870X2. Now running two of those in Crossfire on a chipset that supports both cards at 16x (unlike the 8x each for the new P45) would be something. Anysuggestions of a cpu? I'm thinking an E8500 to overclock a bit. thanks again! :D Flyby out
  19. ATI is going to be cming out with a dual gpu version of the 4870 video card. It will cost about $500.00 (so will the new Nvidia GTX280 with announced price drops). Anyone think this new ATi card will be overkill for the Black Shark world? I'm thinking that finally I will go with a single card solution on the new P45 chipset. No Crossfire as the P45 only implements it in 8x-8x versus 16x-16x for the X38 and X48 chipsets. Then again, one day the price of the 4870X2 will drop, and having that in Crossfire m ight be just SICK! Besides, I don't think an X38 costs too much more than a P45 mobo. Comments? Spare gum? Spare change? Flyby out
  20. The Vikhr can take out an Abrams tank. Right? By the way, how do you suppose a Black Shark might attack a heavy brigade? Oh I know. Lots of variables I wonder how attach helicopters do againt insurgencies. I suppose they are best used as support for ground troops. Attacking a heavy brigade or fighting an insurgency. Either way the Black Shark mission builders will probably have some fun. just whiling the time away. Flyby out
  21. rgrt Acedy thanks for the reply. I actually have a legacy floppy drive, a 160gb hdd that's never been formatted, plus a cd-rom, and a pata (?) dvd/cd rw unit. Only the cd and the floppy have been used. The other components sat waiting for a new mobo for a P4 2.8 cpu. I have WinXP home edition upgrade, plus Windows ME!!! Anyway I need ME to install the WinXP upgrade as it will look for a file which is on the ME disk. I have a nice case which has three fans. So I guess I'm set; just have to pencil in the partuclars. thanks for the reply. Flyby out
  22. Yeah, BABY!!! here's a very good article on the new ATi cards. Notice that the 4870 is extremely competitive with the Nvidia GTX-260. Great performance and costing $100.00 USD less! I guess I can plan on an Intel chipset, using the GPU pricing difference to help finance an X-38 chipset. http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTUyNCwsLGhlbnRodXNpYXN0 Slightly ot: what's the leanest system I can build component-wise? 1- Power supply 2- Mobo 3- hdd 4- ram 5- cpu + cooler 6- dvd/cd-RW 7- gpu 8- OS anything else? I can always add components later, but I need to go streamlined for now. Flyby out
  23. 4870 on the Tech Report I'm sure more reviews will sping out today. the 4870 is here! http://techreport.com:80/articles.x/14990 Flyby out
  24. awww man! did I deserve that? I was so earnestly trying to explain as clearly as I could...well... you know me.:smilewink: Flyby out
