    Close Call

it's moments like these... I guess it's moments like these when explosive diarrhea can be a good thing (fire suppressant)!:megalol:
  2. here's to you! Hello 67th_VFS! I hope you guys recruit many good flyers for your squadron. I checked out your website, and it's a good looking one. I think anyone looking for a good bunch to fly with should check you guys out. Good luck, and good hunting! Flyby out ps I might drop in on your comms, just to listen to how you conduct business. I might learn sumptin.;) ps-ps do you guys fly full real in IL2? and do you use any of those mods?
  3. you guys! I'm always interersted in tech discussions in a sim forum, and you guys deliver the goods. I have read the goat entrails and find that indeed our lot is tied to cpu performance. In reading a lot of different online reviews of video cards, I've decided that HardOCP seems to tickle my fancy the best. Why? Because when they test graphics cards, they use an Intel qx9770 overclocked to 3.6ghz "to eliminate the cpu bottleneck". I prefer a single card solution, so I read those reviews. I was once considering either Crossfire or SLI, but gave up on those notions. Neither card maker currently has the technical solution to allow linear multi-GPU scaling in games, especially combat flight sims. Haven't you read about microstutters, and such with multi cards in our combat flight sims? I know you haven't read about 100% scaling improvements. How about 80%? So maybe 3.6 ghz is the sweet spot for a cpu? I haven't read much to say going to 4.ghz is any better, nor that a quad core at 3.6 is better than a dual core at 3.6 for our flight sims. Also, be aware that some card make-overs that go from 512mb of memory to 1ghz of memory is not always an improvement. The key word here is make-over. Such cards seem to make a difference only at those higher resolutions where the added memory can come into play, such as going from 16x rez to 25x rez. So unless you play on a 30-inch monitor those make-over cards are not the way to go. But if you bought an Nvidia GTX280 card, then you'd have legitimate power way up the rez chain as well as down low too. Most people here seem to own 22 inch monitors, so the 280 may be overkill, and the 4870X2 is WAY overkill for that monitor, imo. But nice to have room to grow to a bigger screen with those cards!:D Well? There it is.:smartass: Flyby out
  4. I think she's a real dog. ;)
  5. thanks for the replies, guys. Good input! I'll hold of for a while. Flyby out
  6. Anyone treid Google's Chrome browser yet? I know it's beta, and I've read already that it's hacker-prone, but that has not been confirmed. I'm just a bit reluctant to give it a spin, especially on the wife's computer!:music_whistling: But i thought I'd ask to see if anyone has any personal experience, and can recomend it. Flyby out.
  7. let me be clear... sorry for the political verbage, but what I mean to say is that I don't believe Nehalem will be a very good upgrade for gamers. It really remains to be seen, but the linked article is not the only one discussing Nehalem's minor step in improving pc games. I searched for "Nehalem for pc gaming" and received a couple of hits. The initial processors seems to be more for servers, and IT functions, if the article is to be believed. Also let me say , after reading lots of reviews about the newer video cards, that having at least a dual core processor clocked at over 3.2ghz seems to reduce the cpu choke point. Hard OCP (for instance) during GPU testing typically clocks it's q9xxx processor to 3,6ghz, stating it's intent to insure the cpu is not a bottleneck. Anyway, until someone actually tests a Nehalem in gaming the jury is still out on how it will perform. But early info seems to indicate it may not be the wonder processor gamers want. Flyby out
  8. I'm not so sure Black Shark will be GPU-limited, but more likely cpu-limited because of AI and many objects. New GPUs on the market may actually handle BS quite nicely. I didn't get from reading the linked article that Nehalem would be a serious frames-per-second increase over the Penryn for simmers. Not right away anyway. Something about cache levels and such.
  9. re:me on Nehalem not really for gaming OK I found the source: Anandtech wrote the article. Here's the link. Draw your own conclusions. http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=480 But I guess it's better to wait and see factual results of gaming on a Nehalem/X58 system. Flyby out
  10. Nehalem for gaming? I'll try to locate the source, but I've read that the Nehalem won't be that big of a deal for gaming. It will be a big hit for apps that thrive on multi-cores. Flyby out
  11. you said it! I don't even think I'll choose a new GPU until I select a monitor first for exactly that reason! Flyby out
  12. Anand tests 24 inch lcds Go here for a good review. it has pictures to look at that show interesting results, imho. Be sure to check the article index (d'uh!)http://www.anandtech.com/displays/showdoc.aspx?i=3302 Flyby out
  13. whoops!!! forgot the link...:music_whistling: ( my edit button only gives me the circular arrows ad-infinitum) http://www.displayblog.com/2008/07/04/acer-g24-worlds-best-contrast-gaming-lcd-monitor/ Flyby
  14. hey Vek, from what little I understand about lcd monitors, you are right to be concerned with that low contrast number. The response time seems good, but that isn't the only deciding factor for me. Lower contrast seems to mean that blacks will not be rich in color, but rather grayed out. check out the fluff on this Acer 24 inch lcd with a dynamic contrast ratio of 50,000:1!!! No that I believe it, but it's nice reading. I did a search for "best gaming lcd monitor", and this is one hit. Flyby out
  15. check out this article over at TechReport. It talks about Nvidia being nice to the X58 chipset, and enabling SLi mode in the bios without using the N200 chipset. INterersting, especially with thhe price drops of the GTX280 recently. Hope you find it useful! http://techreport.com/discussions.x/15405 Flyby out
  16. ps, if you want a good warranty, BenQ seems to be acceptable. read this link, and check out customer reviews and specs. It's a 24 inch, but I assume a 22 is available. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824014173 Yup!! here's a 22 inch. nice price, and good reviews! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824014172 good luck, and let us know what you decide on. Flyby out
  17. maybe this link will help? hey SKF, check this link out. It's to the Hardocp forum/display thread. Maybe if you join, and post someone there can give you a good lead. Or just do a search there for what you're looking for. http://www.hardforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=78
  18. Since I'm a house-husband I think I can do two hours a day (once I get a new system). That should give me time to fly IL2-1946 online in the morning: GMT-5 here, do my house chores, get dinner ready then go pick up wifey-pooh from work. Once she's home I put on the old speedo and become the sex slave, feeding her grapes, and such, using a large ostrich-feathered fan to provide cool breezes while she talks on the phone with her demonic mother. Hey! It's hard being me! :D Flyby out
  19. thanks Viper. I hope people find it useful. Something to dream for anyway. Imagine if it works and alleviates the stutters people complain about, plus offering true scaling where two fo the same card is twice as fast as one everytime. Let's hope the card producers won't put drivers out that disable it. Might it be best if Intel bought them out. Who would need the N200 chip from Nvidia on the new X58 chipset so that Nehalem could run SLi? :D Flyby out
  20. the Hydra engine cometh! my prayers about true scaling may have been answered! check out these links. http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2328495,00.asp http://techreport.com/articles.x/15367 :D :D :D :D :D am I grinning? :D :D :D :D :D yeah, i think I am!:megalol: Flyby out
  21. ya hooooooo!!! thanks Matt, I am so pumped for this sim! :D Flyby out
  22. Sad to hear. sympathies to his family.
  23. a useful link? Hey Groove, maybe this link will help you out a little bit. :) Flyby out http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=191&Itemid=1 ps, if yu look at the menus on the left of the page, you'll see a selection for "monitor/hdtv". you might find that useful too. Good luck, and let us know what you decide. I'm in the market too, and seek a single card solution.
  24. -=Phoenix=- (anyone) how does LOMAC performace scale in SLi mode? Do two cards get you double the frame rates of one card? I don't really believe that SLI would do that well, but I'd like to know the performance improvement %. Flyby out
  25. I guess all we'll really need is for someone to come up with racing pylons that can be placed on a map. ;)
